A single i.v. dose of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) given to rats has produced a marked hyper-glycemia (>500 mg serum glucose/dl). Since the Atractylodis Rhizoma is known to have hypo-glycemic action, the water extracts of Atractylodis Rhizoma (ARWE) was given to the streptozotocin-induced (SZ) hyperglycemic rats. To determine whether ARWE has the anti-hyperglycemic effects, two different daily doses of ARWE (i.e.0.2 g/kg and 2.0 g/kg) were given orally to the SZ rats for up to 8 days. Thereupon, serum levels of glucose, insulin, amylase and cholesterol were determined on days 1, 3 and 8, following the initial and repeated daily administrations of ARWE. On day 8, glycogen content and glucose-6-phosphatase activity in the liver were assayed. Results showed that ARWE decreased the serum glucose levels, which had been markedly elevated by the SZ pre-treatment. In support of this, the serum insulin level, which had been quickly lowered by the SZ pre-treatment $(20{\mu}U/ml)$, was quickly elevated in the ARWE dose dependent manner that, at 2.0 g/kg ARWE, the serum insulin level was increased $(20{\mu}U/ml)$ above the normal level $(42{\mu}U/ml)$. Also, the serum amylase level, which was steadily decreasing after the SZ pre-treatment, was restored to the normal level folowing 8 day of ARWE (2.0 g/kg) treatment. Hepatic glycogen content and glucose-6-phosphatase activity, which decreased and increased, respectively in the 52 treatment group, were restored toward the normal level in SZ plus ARWE group.

Kidney and liver are the major organs of metabolism and excretion of drugs. Renal and Hepatic impairment may affect the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and the safety of drugs. Adjusting the dosage based on organ function is the essential role of pharmacists. However, differences have been noted on the recommended dosage among the literatures. We compared and analyzed the recommendations of 4 literature sources which are commonly used for dosage adjustment. From April, 2011 to August, 2011, we selected data on recommendations for dosage adjustment for impaired renal and hepatic function of 100 drugs through a protocol. We analyzed the definition terms of renal and hepatic impairment, recommendations for dosage adjustment, evidenced references in four literature sources: Korean National Formulary (KNF), American Hospital Formulary System Drug Information (AHFS), Micromedex (MM) and Drug Prescribing of Renal Failure (DPRF). We further examined the data homogeneity by comparing how drugs that required no adjustment according to one source were categorized by the other. Sources use different definition terms among themselves except DRPF. Presence or absence of evidenced references about renal/hepatic functional states are KNF (0%/0%), AHFS (78%/62.6%), MM (87.5%/65.6%) and DPRF (93.2%/no recommendation) respectively. Recommendations of specific dosage and dosing interval are KNF (24%/13%), AHFS (39.6%/12.1%), MM (50%/17.7%), and DPRF (55.4%/no recommendation) respectively. Regarding the data homogeneity, the differences were remarkable. Drugs with no adjustment according to AHFS were categorized to be adjusted/ contraindicated by KNF, MM, DPRF and the values were (44%/5.6%), (22%/0%), and (36%/0%) in renal function, (39%/6.5%), (19%/3.2%), and (no recommendation/no recommendation) in hepatic function respectively. Our study shows remarkable definite variation in definitions and recommendations about definition terms, information of dosage and interval, presence or absence of evidenced references. Especially for KNF, quantitative recommendations on dosages and dosing intervals should be made in the near future. To maximize the drug effect and safety and to minimize the heterogeneity of the literature sources, reviewing at least two sources are suggested when recommending the proper dosage adjustment based on organ function.

Generally, depth cache and pixel cache of 3D graphics are designed by using write-back scheme for efficient use of memory bandwidth. Also, there are write after read operations of same address or only write operations are occurred frequently in 3D graphics cache. If a cache miss is detected, an access to the external memory for write back operation and another access to the memory for handling the cache miss are operated simultaneously. So on frequent cache miss situations, as the memory access bandwidth limited, the access time of the external memory will be increased due to memory bottleneck problem. As a result, the total performance of the processor or the IP will be decreased, also the problem will increase peak power consumption. So in this paper, we proposed a novel early write back cache architecture so as to solve the problems issued above. The proposed architecture controls the point when to access the external memory as to copy the valid data block. And this architecture can improve the cache performance with same hit ratio and same capacity cache. As a result, the proposed architecture can solve the memory bottleneck problem by preventing intensive memory accesses. We have evaluated the new proposed architecture on 3D graphics z cache and pixel cache on a SoC environment where ARM11, 3D graphic accelerator and various IPs are embedded. The simulation results indicated that there were maximum 75% of performance increase when using various simulation vectors.

This paper presents the implementation of an analog signal-processing ASIS to detect an angular velocity signal from a vibrator angular velocity detection sensor. The output of the sensor to be charge appeared as the variation of the capacitance value in the structure of the sensor was detected using charge amplifiers and a self oscillation circuit for driving the sensor was implemented with a sinusoidal self oscillation circuit using the resonance characteristics of the sensor. Specially an automatic gain control circuit was utilized to prevent the deterioration of self-oscillation characteristics due to the external elements such as the characteristic variation of the sensor process and the temperature variation. The angular velocity signal, amplitude-mod)Hated in the operation characteristics of the sensor, was demodulated using a synchronous detection circuit. A switching multiplication circuit was used in the synchronous detection circuit to prevent the magnitude variation of detected signal caused by the amplitude variation of the carrier signal. The ASIC was designed and implemented using 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS process. The chip size was 1.2mm x 1mm. In the experiment under the supply voltage of 3V, the ASIC consumed the supply current of 3.6mA and noise spectrum density from dc to 50Hz was in the range of -95 dBrms/√Hz and -100 dBrms/√Hz when the ASIC, coupled with the sensor, was in normal operation.
Delirium is a common symptom in patients with terminal cancer. The prevalence increases in the dying phase. Delirium causes negative effects on quality of life for both patients and their families, and is associated with higher mortality. However, some studies reported that it tends to remain unrecognized in palliative care setting. That may be related with difficulties to distinguish the symptom from others with overlapping characteristics such as depression and dementia, and a lack of knowledge regarding assessment and diagnostic tools. We suggest that accurate recognition with validated tools and early diagnosis of the symptom should be highly prioritized in delirium management in palliative care setting. After diagnosing delirium, it is important to identify and address reversible precipitants such as medication, dehydration, and infection. Non-pharmacological interventions including comfortable environment for the patient and family education are also essential in the management strategy. If such interventions prove ineffective or insufficient to control hyperactive symptoms, pharmacologic interventions with antipsychotics and benzodiazepine can be considered. Until now, low levels of haloperidol remains the standard treatment despite a lack of evidence. Atypical antipsychotics such as olanzapine, quetiapine and risperidone reportedly have similar efficacy with a stronger sedating property and less adverse effect compared to haloperidol. Currently, delirium medications that can be used in palliative care setting require more clinical trials, and thus, clinical guidelines are not sufficiently available. We suggest that it is warranted to develop clinical guidelines based on well-designed clinical studies for palliative care patients.
A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effect of application amounts of silicates on the fatty acid and sterol composition of paddy rice at various growing stages. The results obtained were as follows; 1. At maximum tillering stage and heading stage, significant positive correlations were obtained between the ratio of unsaturated fatty acid to saturated fatty acid and silica absorption, dry matter or grain yield, respectively. But significant correlation was not observed between them at harvesting time. 2. At maximum tillering stage and heading stage, the ratio of unsaturated fatty acid to saturated fatty acid in paddy rice was increased with increasing silica application from 80 to 180 ppm of soil, but these ratio was decreased at the plot of 200Kg/10a of silicate. 3. The ratio of sitosterol to stigmasterol in paddy rice at maximum tillering stage was increased with increasing silica application of soil, but these ratio was increased with increasing silica application up to 180 ppm of soil at heading stage, and was decreased at the plot of 200Kg/10a (410 ppm in soil) application of silicates.
Although the requirement and optimum soil level of Si for oriental melon are still not well understood, silicate fertilizer is commonly applied to the oriental melon in plastic film houses where soil silicate level is relatively high. In this research the effects of silicate fertilizer on growth, fruit yield and fruit quality of oriental melon, and soil properties were investigated in plastic film house where the soil available silicate was $212mg\;SiO_2\;kg^{-1}$. Silicate fertilizer was applied in the rates of 100, 200, and $300kg\;10a^{-1}$. The application of silicate fertilizer could not increase the early growth of oriental melon, and also the fruit yield and quality were not different among the treatments. Available Si and P contents in soils and also Si and P contents in leaf of oriental melon of the different treatments were not significantly different. In the relationship between total Si in oriental melon leaf and soil silicate extracted by 1 N sodium acetate, optimum soil available silicate level for oriental melon was found to be around $100mg\;SiO_2\;kg^{-1}$. These results indicate that the additional silicate fertilization in soils of available silicate higher than $100mg\;SiO_2\;kg^{-1}$ is unnecessary, and such application of silicate can not have any beneficial effect on the growth and fruit yield of oriental melon.

Background: Following the implantation of heart valve prostheses, it is important to maintain therapeutic INR to reduce the risk of thromboembolism. The objectives of this study were to determine the causes of nontherapeutic INRs, and to identify the factors associated with nonadherences to warfarin therapy in Korean outpatients with prosthetic heart valves managed by a pharmacist-run anticoagulation service (ACS). Material and Method: A retrospective chart review was completed for all patients enrolled in the ACS at Seoul National University Hospital from March, 1997b to September, 2000. The data on 868 patients (5,304 visits) who were at least 6 months post-valve replacement were included. All possible causes of nontherapeutic INRs were documented for each patient visit. The association of covariates to noncompliance was investigated by univariate analysis. Result: The reasons for nontherapeutic INRs were identified as follows: inadequate dosage adjustment $(21\%)$, nonadherences to dosing regimen $(13\%)$, drug/herbal interactions $(12\%)$, changes in diet $(7\%)$, and indeterminate cause $(42\%)$. Younger age, shorter duration of ACS and longer duration of warfarin therapy were associated with nonadherence. Conclusion: In this study, nonadherence and interactions between diet and medications were found to be important factors influencing nontherapeutic INRs. Longer duration of enrollment in the ACS affected the adherence to warfarin therapy Positively whereas younger age and longer duration of warfarin therapy affected negatively.

High-strength strands have been increasingly applied to recent actual structures in Korea. Structural effect of the increased spacing of sheaths was investigated in this study when the usual 1,860 MPa strands of an LNG storage tank are replaced with 2,400 MPa high-strength strands. First, finite element models of a cylindrical wall of an LNG tank were established and prestressing effect of the circumferential and vertical tendons was considered as equivalent loads. As a result of varying the tendon spacing and prestressing force with the total prestressing effect kept the same, the stress distribution required in design was obtained with the high-strength strands. Also, a full-scale specimen that corresponds to a part of an LNG tank wall was fabricated with 31 high-strength strands with 15.2 mm diameter inserted in each of two sheaths. It was observed that such a high level of prestressing force can be properly transferred to concrete. Moreover, an LNG tank with the world's largest 270,000 kl capacity was modeled and the prestressing effect of high-strength strands was compared with that of normal strands. The watertightness specifications such as residual compressive stress and residual compression zone were also ensured in case of leakage accident. The results of this study can be effectively used when the 2,400 MPa high-strength strands are applied to actual LNG tanks.
Recent research has shown that curcumin has beneficial effects in a variety of skin diseases, including scleroderma, psoriasis, and skin cancer. In this study, we assessed the effects of curcumin on epidermal permeability barrier function in vivo and in vitro. In order to evaluate the effects of curcumin on epidermal permeability barrier function in vivo, hairless rats were exposed to UVB irradiation, and curcumin was administered orally at a dosage of 150 mg/kg per day for 8 weeks. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and epidermal thickness were measured at the end of the experiment. The expression of filaggrin, a marker of keratinocyte differentiation, and serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), a marker of the formation of the stratum corneum lipid barrier, in human HaCat keratinocytes were analyzed. The in vivo results showed that an 8 week administration of curcumin markedly prevented the UVB-induced increase in TEWL. The UV-induced increase in epidermal thickness was also reduced significantly by curcumin treatment. The in vitro results demonstrated the concentration-dependent effects of curcumin on the expression of both filaggrin and SPT in HaCat cells, reflecting the notion that curcumin can induce epidermal keratinocyte differentiation and can improve the recovery of skin barrier functions. These results show that curcumin is a promising candidate for the improvement of epidermal permeability barrier function.
