A Comparison between the Decomposition of Bisphenol A and the Concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide Formed during Ozone/Catalyst Oxidation Process (오존/촉매 산화공정에서 비스페놀 A의 분해와 생성된 과산화수소의 농도 비교)

  • In this study, the formation of hydroxyl radical and decomposition characteristics of bisphenol A (BPA) was investigated by quantifying hydrogen peroxide formed as a reaction by-product during the formation stage of hydroperoxyl radical. The direct oxidation reaction by ozone only decomposed BPA just like the Criegee mechanism under the condition where radical chain reactions did not occur. Non-selective oxidation reactions occurred under the conditions of pH 6.5 and 9.5 where radical chain reactions do occur, confirming indirectly the formation of hydroxyl radical. The decomposition efficiency of BPA by the added catalysts appeared in the order of $O_3$/PAC ${\geq}$ $O_3/H_2O_2$ > $O_3$/high pH > $O_3$ alone. 0.03~0.08 mM of hydrogen peroxide were continuously measured during the oxidation reactions of ozone/catalyst processes. In the case of $O_3$/high pH process, BPA was completely decomposed in 50 min of the oxidation reaction, but reaction intermediates formed by oxidation reaction were not oxidized sufficiently with 29% of the removal ratio for total organic carbon (TOC, selective oxidation reaction). In the case of $O_3/H_2O_2$ and $O_3$/PAC processes, BPA was completely decomposed in 40 min of the oxidation reaction, and reaction intermediates formed by the oxidation reaction were oxidized with 57% and 66% of removal ratios for TOC, respectively (non-selective oxidation reactions).

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of mushroom cultivation on ozone susceptibility. The mushroom media in cultivation became softening well without bad Knell when it was soaked for 120 hours. The mushroom media softening on cultivating of oyster mushroom was good and fast when the concentration of gas condition ozone is high. The concentration of gas condition ozone must control at less than 0.02 ppm at the innoculation room, 0.03 ppm at the incubating room, must not use at the sprouting mom, less than 0.02 ppm at the growing room respectively. Also at the growing room, it removes the smell of mushroom, so has a protective effects of coming into mushroom fees and disease. When the concentration of 0.02 ppm liquid condition ozone was sprinkled, it was very useful in disease protection If it was input, the storage period of mushroom fruiting body was prolonged.

  • Effects of operating parameters such as activated carbon dose, gaseous $O_3$ concentration and pH on the properties of methylene blue(MB) degradation in a catalytic ozonation were investigated through a series of batch experiments. Activated carbon catalyzed the self-decomposition of ozone, generating $OH{\cdot}$, thus promoting MB degradation. Thus the increase of activated carbon dose enhanced the MB and TOC removal. The higher gaseous ozone concentration injected, the promoted MB and TOC removal obtained through the enhanced mass transfer. The MB removal was not significantly affected by the variation of aqueous pH. Catalytic ozonation can be considered as an efficient alternative in treating refractory pollutants in textile wastewater with faster and higher dye and TOC removal compared with ozonation and adsorption.

  • In this study, the air quality of underground and overground railway stations was evaluated focusing on the degree of influence of the outside air quality. The measured components were particulate matter ($PM_{10}$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$), formaldehyde (HCHO), ozone ($O_3$), total airborne bacteria (TAB), total volatile organic carbon (TVOC), and Radon (Rn), which are included in the maintenance standards and recommended standards of the Indoor Air Quality Management Act. Also, the indoor/outdoor concentration ratios of $PM_{10}$, $NO_2$, and $O_3$ were calculated to estimate the influence of the outdoor air quality. The concentrations of $PM_{10}$ HCHO, TVOC, $NO_2$, and Rn in the underground stations were found to be higher than those in the overground stations. These results indicate that the (present) generation of contaminants are caused by the indoor source of the underground station. The ozone concentration of the overground stations was higher than that of the underground stations, which indicates that the outdoor ozone concentration influenced that of the overground stations directly. Thus, methods of improving the IAQ should take into consideration the types of contamination.

  • A mechanism of ozonation of simulated soil slurry contaminated by phenanthrene and benzo[a]pyrene has been studied under various conditions. The effects of soil media(BS, S, GB), radical scavenger, ozone input ratio(0.17~0.73mg/min), bicarbonate ion, and humic acid were investigated, BS showed the highest removal efficiency in media tested. The generation of OH-radical via the catalytic decomposition of ozone on active sites of the natural sand was confirmed by OH-radical scavenger experiments. The enhanced removal efficiency by OH-radical was indirectly quantified to be about 22%. As initial concentration of humic acid(as sodium salt) was increased, pseudo first-order rate constant ($k_o$) of phenanthrene was decreased from $1.37{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$ to $0.53{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$. The amount of ozone required to oxidize 80% of the initial mass of phenanthrene(10mg/kg) and benzo[a]pyrene(10mg/kg) was 67.2mg/kg-soil and 48.0mg/kg-soil, respectively.

Uncertainties of SO2 Vertical Column Density Retrieval from Ground-based Hyper-spectral UV Sensor Based on Direct Sun Measurement Geometry (지상관측 기반 태양 직달광 관측장비의 초분광 자외센서로부터 이산화황 연직칼럼농도의 불확실성 분석 연구)

  • In this present study, the effects of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM), Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), $O_3$ Vertical Column Density ($O_3$ VCD), and Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) on the accuracy of sulfur dioxide Vertical Column Density ($SO_2$ VCD) retrieval have been quantified using the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) method with the ground-based direct-sun synthetic radiances. The synthetic radiances produced based on the Beer-Lambert-Bouguer law without consideration of the diffuse effect. In the SNR condition of 650 (1300) with FWHM = 0.6 nm, AOD = 0.2, $O_3$ VCD = 300 DU, and $SZA=30^{\circ}$, the Absolute Percentage Difference (APD) between the true $SO_2$ VCD values and those retrieved ranges from 80% (28%) to 16% (5%) for the $SO_2$ VCD of $8.1{\times}10^{15}$ and $2.7{\times}10^{16}molecules\;cm^{-2}$, respectively. For an FWHM of 0.2 nm (1.0 nm) with the $SO_2$ VCD values equal to or greater than $2.7{\times}10^{16}molecules\;cm^{-2}$, the APD ranges from 6.4% (29%) to 6.2% (10%). Additionally, when FWHM, SZA, AOD, and $O_3$ VCD values increase, APDs tend to be large. On the other hand, SNR values increase, APDs are found to decrease. Eventually, it is revealed that the effects of FWHM and SZA on $SO_2$ VCD retrieval accuracy are larger than those of $O_3$ VCD and AOD. The SZA effects on the reduction of $SO_2$ VCD retrieval accuracy is found to be dominant over the that of FWHM for the condition of $SO_2$ VCD larger than $2.7{\times}10^{16}molecules\;cm^{-2}$.

  • A nonthermal plasma reactor in conjunction with a tubular type with a ferroelectric (high-dielectric ceramic) pellet layer was designed and constructed. $SrBiTaO_9$ (SBT) pellets with 2.0 mm in diameter were held within the tube arrangement by two metal mesh electrodes (20 mm separation) connected to a high-voltage AC power supply. The dielectric constant of SBT pellets was 150 at room temperature and 500 at curie temperature ($335^{\circ}C$). The generation rate of ozone in the plasma reactor almost linearly increased with increasing applied voltage. In the case of the plasma reactor packed with SBT pellets the generation rate of ozone sharply increased at the applied voltage more than 20 kV. The ozone generation rate at the negative corona discharge was higher than that of the positive corona discharge. However, the destruction efficiency of toluene and methylene chloride was not increased in proportion to ozone concentration.
