  • The Purpose of this study is to investigate the general trends of research on gifted education in Korea, by analyzing the articles published during the last thirty years. A total of 347 articles from 14 academic journals which are registered were yearly and synthetically analyzed. The articles were examined in terms of their topics, domains, and age and grade. The most widely researched topic was the cognitive characteristics of the gifted followed by curriculum and affective characteristics of the gifted. Studies on scientifically, generally and mathematically gifted students occupied 86% of total researches. Researches utilized elementary students as their subjects more than middle school or high school students. There is a lack of research on the problems that the gifted students face and on the assessment of gifted education institutes. Moreover, there is hardly any longitudinal study.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate current trends and future directions of research in the area of gifted education through the analysis of published manuscripts on giftedness and gifted education between $2000{\sim}2006$. About 521 articles among 35 journals and 49 dissertations listed in the Korea Education and Research Information Service, including the journal of gifted/talented education and the journal of giftedness and gifted education, were mainly analyzed in the present study. The articles were examined by topics, domains, ages, and research methods both yearly and synthetically. The most widely researched topic was curriculum and program issues in gifted education, and the topic related to factors and development of giftedness was the second. Most studies have continuously focused on the mathematically and scientifically gifted students, and studies on gifted students in the areas of art, language, and other domains were scant. Issues on underachieving gifted students and underachievement were researched actively in 2005. More research has utilized elementary students as samples rather than middle or high school students. Young children under 7 have attracted much attention by researchers after 2004. Related to research methods, literature review was the most widely used, survey was the second, and experimental and correlational studies were the next. Implications related to results were discussed in depth.

  • To investigate the more effective mathematical communication process, a recommended teacher and a selected class as an exemplary model was analyzed with Flanders system. The mathematical communicative level was examined to measure content level using the framework analysing the mathematical communicative level(Park & Pang) based on describing levels of math-talk learning community(Hufferd-Ackles). The purposes of this paper are to describe the verbal flow pattern between teacher and students in the elementary school class for mathematically gifted students, and to propose the effective communication model of math-talk with analysis of verbal teaching behavior in the active class. In addition the whole and the parts of the exemplary class sample is respectively analysed to be used practically by elementary school teachers. The results show the active communication process with higher level presents a pattern 'Ask Question${\rightarrow}$Activity (Silence, Confusion or work)${\rightarrow}$Student-Initiated Talk${\rightarrow}$Activity (Silence, Confusion or work), and the teacher's verbal behavior promoting math communication actively is exhibited by indirect influence especially accepting or using ideas.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the flow of teacher-student verbal interactions and the types of discourse in the science gifted classes of three effective teachers. The three effective teacher were recommended by the expert of a gifted education or science education expert. A participant observation was carried out in their classes, and all the classes were videotaped. The collected videotape materials were transcribed, and Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories and an AF program were utilized to analyze the video clips. The findings of this study were as follows: First, there was no specific flow of verbal interactions in the classes provided by the effective gifted teachers, but the kind of positive verbal interaction that the students responded diversely to their questions or lectures took place. Second, the most prevalent type of utterance in the classes of them was lecturing, and the remark of direction and criticism scarcely took place. And lots of non-directive remarks were found such as emotional acceptance, praise, encouragement or acceptance of ideas. As a result, the effective science gifted teachers made more nondirective remarks such as emotional acceptance, praise, encouragement and acceptance of ideas than directive remarks such as direction or criticism, and their non-directive remark made it possible to elicit more extensive responses from their students.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the future direction of research on gifted education through a literature review of dissertations and research reports, as well as an analysis of the trends and milestones achieved related to gifted education. The period from 2003 to 2012, from which the data for this literature review was collected, marks the ten-year period proposed by the Gifted Education Development Comprehensive Plan II and I. Data was collected through a search of the keyword "gifted" on Academic Naver and on Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS). Results showed 1,696 articles from 182 academic journals, 138 doctoral dissertations, 1,470 masters' dissertations, and 798 research reports from 75 institutions. For analysis, each article was classified by target of study, kind of giftedness, subject of study, and methods used for the study. Results from this literature review demonstrated that from 2003 to 2012, the articles from the 182 academic journals and the doctoral and masters' dissertations used quantitative research to analyze elementary and middle school students gifted in math and science as well as the curriculum and programs of their study. This paper provides recommendations for future research on gifted education within the country.

  • Considering the expansion of gifted education and the quantitative increase the Gifted Science Academy, it is important to seek the appropriate methods of mathematics teaching for gifted high school students. In particular, to reflect current trends in mathematics education that the mathematical creativity is being presented as an important educational goal, Now is the time we need student-centered discussion model for regular mathematics classes, not teacher-centered instruction in the way of knowledge transfer. In this study, class model of preparation-based discussion was designed and applied to the regular mathematics classes for the Science Academy. Students participating in this research had a lot of pressure in preparation activities for discussion, but they said that the discussion compared to traditional lecture was mathematically meaningful experience. These findings suggest the implication that class model of preparation-based discussion can be meaningfully applied to the regular mathematics class.

  • Since the start of gifted education in 2002, educational support system has now been established, and sufficient growth in quantitative aspects has been achieved in Korea. On the other hand, they report that there are insufficient points in terms of education quality. In other words, most of the gifted education simply expands knowledge by prior-learning. In order to improve the quality of gifted education, they should enhance critical-thinking and creativity able to apply interdisciplinary principles or phenomena for solving problems. In this study, we designed and developed a convergent teaching-learning materials based on the concept of integrated education, which explore the process that basic logic operations such as AND, OR, XOR do the role of computer cells. A survey result showed that student satisfaction(usefulness, understanding, interest) of the materials is significantly higher than that of other traditional learning topics, and the design intent was met.

  • As the results of studies based on the Russian Activities-Oriented Theory, the gifted students in many fields have common insights for the true nature of the problem, or the actual state. From Russian Activities-Oriented Theory of view, gifted students have the ability to discern the essential elements involved in each actual state and change of state of things, and to solve the problem, based on these elements. Enhancing these abilities of the students, the educator can develop the average student into a gifted one. This study result of the Russian specialist suggests the possibility of a stream of education that can develop gifted students. Hence, this paper discussed the points and processes of formation of the Russian Activities-Oriented Theory, and inquired on what is the true nature of the problem or the meaning of actual state and how it affects the studies of the student. The paper also investigated the actual conditions of wrong learning about some mathematical concepts and discussed the role of insights to the true nature of the problem in the learning process of the student.
