The Korean Nationalist Characteristics of the Korean Blockbuster Films: Focusing on and (한국형 블록버스터 영화의 한국 민족주의적 특성: <공동경비구역 JSA>와 <한반도>를 중심으로)

  • What is 'nation' and 'nationalism?' What does 'korean nationalism' mean? And how is korean nationalism represented through a chain of films called 'the korean blockbuster films?' The purpose of this study is to answer to these questions. The characteristics of the korean blockbuster films have been studied for quite a long time and the researchers have agreed with the context about nationalism in a large sense. However, majority of the studies ends up in the journalistic or impressionistic criticism without any theoretical discussion. Few theoretical criticisms also have founded on the formation process of nation of the Western Europe and their nationalism. Hence I would like to add the discourse of korean nationalism and to seize more accurately the social/cultural/historical peculiarity of the korean blockbuster films. In addition, as non-nationalist narratives have recently emerged, korean blockbuster films are entering to the evolution process. On this, the significance of this study seems to exist in providing a cornerstone to the expected evolution theory of the korean blockbuster films by means of complementation and reestablishment of nationalism of their first generation. and , presenting socio-historical peculiarity of the Korean nation, are examined by the close textual analysis.

  • 사랑만큼 인간을 변함없이 사로잡은 테마가 있을까? 아담이 혼자 있는 것이 보기 좋지 않아, 이브를 탄생시켜 에덴동산에서 같이 살게 만들었 다는 <성서>, 질투와 짝사랑, 그리고 이뤄질 수 없는 자기애 등 사랑에서 생기는 많은 모티프의 원형으로 가득한 <그리스,로마 신화>, 그리고 바보 온달 왕자를 사랑의 힘으로 훌륭하게 만들었다는 낙랑공주의 이야기 등이 담긴 <삼국유사>. 역사의 고전에는 어디에나 사랑의 이야기가 넘쳐날 정도로 풍부하다. 그러나 이렇게 많은 사랑의 이야기에도 불구하고 우리는 새로운 사랑 이야기를 찾는다. 그리고 언제나 다시 사랑의 이야기에 주목하게 된다. 디지털 시대라고 해서 다를까? 그렇지 않다. SF영화, 미래를 다루는 영화에서도 사랑은 빠지지 않고 등장하는 중요한모티프이다. <매트릭스>만 봐도 그렇다. 궁극적으로 모든 갈등과 위기를 구원하는 것은‘사랑’이지 않은가. 이처럼‘사랑’은 인류 최대의 난제이자 영원한 테마인 것이다.

Visual Contents Study of Historic Re-create about Memory of China 6th Generation Director (중국 6세대 감독의 기억에 관한 역사적 재현 영상콘텐츠 연구)

  • This dissertation is considered a historic generation that Chinese film $6^{th}$ director remembers through their life. Also it is figured out historic anguish and hurt how it was remembered and appeared in film. They have made actual films through their efforts which are different from the conventional generation. In addition, between memory and oblivion the time's signification in the history is showed how what way can be represented. It was presented the time's anguish through memory's metaphor in Chinese film $6^{th}$ works. Also, it was shown the existence's reality from dream was losing as memory was hiding between desire and despair. Additionally, the self of daily was expressed to unconcernedly accept reality, and its against the unchangeable world's eye and memory. The $6^{th}'s$ films' desire was expressed passive appearance to accept reality with losing dream in these three things; cannot be reality in the process to figure out own natural character, and appearance to keep traditional character, finally gradually changing reality. When $6^{th}$ directors analysis the history as memory, social repression follows family's repression, family's repression brings personal repression, and then repression changes to desire, finally the life as a reaction could be maintained. In conclusion, personal desire was covered for fantasy, and the overcoming figure was represented. Moreover, Chinese face that $6^{th}$ directors have memorized was presented through these sentiments.

  • In the 100-year history of Korean films, Korean films have grown to more than 100 million viewers every year since 2012, and their total sales are estimated at 1 trillion. It is assumed that the influence on the popularity of Korean movies is related to 2012, when 60% of smartphone penetration rate and 30 million subscribers exceeded. As a result, before and after 2012, changes in movie boxing factor variables were needed, and the prediction model trained as a new independent variable was applied to actual data.

  • is a contemporary experimental film that forms ambiguity in the narrative and the psychological motivation of the characters, destroys linear temporality, and reminds of manipulation possibilities in digital images through varied techniques, and it carries implication by the fact that the transformation process of human subjects and self-awareness are connected to social trauma and makes way to infer by comparing it to the historical contexts of other nations or societies. centers on the space outside the screen, absent space, and the intrinsic meaning within the space and the frame and shares the information in the visible space and the space outside the screen and arouses an active perceptual process so that the audience can deduce the information that is not presented. The film visualized the historical meaning without describing the background of the times in detail and aimed to express the conflicts and worries between the god, a transcendental existence, with humans, which are marginal beings, within the conflicting structure among humans. Moreover, attempted to resolve the sadness of loss and absence through the spatial aesthetics and the film presented the progression of the situation through the contrast of the characters and also the comparison between light and darkness. This study intends to make an attempt of interpreting the realm involving personal (characters) stories and the social and historical backgrounds together with the religious sphere and discuss the visualization of the semantic context. In addition, this study analyzed the sequence of the scenes in , which reconstructs identity and historical cases and religious values to observe the meaning and characteristics and closely analyze the general meaning pursued by the film. discussed the issues of trauma that individuals, regions, and nations confront as a representation and interpretation of the trauma connoted in the film, and consideration can be provided about the implication concerning the situation and context in South Korea. Furthermore, the film placidly discusses the growth and agony in humans and the society without expressing it excessively, so it will be a valuable research result to inspire the trend of creating films that incorporate new imaging technology and original visualization techniques.

  • As a film maker, Lee Chang Dong stands out from most Korean film makers who work within the trappings of genre films. To be sure, Lee has also used the trappings of genre films, such as noire and melodrama, but primarily as a tool to communicate with film audience. In his most recent film "Poetry", Lee seems to have even stripped even the minimal trappings of genre film. Lee commands the audience to self-reflect and work towards their own conclusions by denying them the illusory identification on screen. In this way, Lee's works are counter cinema. Lee achieves a distancing effect using such filmic apparatuses as hand-held camera, fantasy, mise en abyme, and returned gaze. Through these filmic apparatuses, Lee exposes the re-presentation of text and compels his audience to see the historical and political contexts of the text. In this study, I make the case that Lee Chang Dong's film making is an act of repetition compulsion that cultivates ethical reflection, through symbolization of the invisible realities.

A Study of Korean Short Animation Films in 1960s - On Animation from Culture Movies of the National Film Production Center of Korea (1960년대 한국단편애니메이션 연구 - 국립영화제작소 문화영화 중 애니메이션에 관하여)

  • The Korean animation that has relatively short history compared to the Western Europe and Japan's animation started out from the non-commercial short-piece animation produced as part of advertisement animation and culture movie in the later part of 1950s. In 1960s, the culture movie animation reflecting for the Movie Act and cultural policies has hardly been mentioned in the history of Korean animation, but they are the precious cultural work produced prior to the theatrical long-piece animation. In particular, compared to the 15-second short CF animation, the short-piece animations are ranging for 4 minutes to 10 minutes as the work pieces with the historic value to measure the level of the Korean animation at that time. in 1960s, approximately 20 short-piece animation works were produced and they contained the educational contents to enlighten general public in the process of modernization policy. Those short-piece animations produced in cultural movie at the National Film Production Center of Korea had been produced not only in cell-facilitating cartoon animation, but also in paper animation and puppet animation. In this background, this thesis takes a close look to the short-piece animation works produced in the National Film Production Center of Korea in 1960s. While there was almost no studies of early short-piece animation other than CF works, it is meaningful to discover and analyze the works, and, Director Park Young-il, Director Han Sung-hak, Director Jung Do-bin, Director Shin Dong-hyun, Director Nelson Shin and others participated in the creative work process have worked as the animation directors for theater that the analysis on the works would be considered as important fundamental studies to understand the Korean animation. Under this thesis, it is intended to study the historic implication and formative characteristics around some 10 work pieces to affirm participating personnel, including directors, for the short-piece animation created by the National Film Production Center of Korea as well as the situation of time to launch the National Film Production Center of Korea in 1960s. Through this effort, it is intended to come up with the starting point to process enriched researches on non-commercial short-piece animation as well as contemplation on the Korean animation history that have been neglected in the study of the Korean animation history through such effort.
