  • The key for cultivating Lentinula edodes in sawdust bags with an appropriate strain and medium is to encourage the mushroom growth, while discouraging contaminating fungi by controlling environment, especially temperature and relative humidity (RH). To investigate the daily and seasonal fluctuation of temperature and RH in two L. edodes cultivation sheds types, HOBO data loggers was set and the collected data were analyzed. In a Taiwan type L. edodes cultivation shed, temperature and humidity changes were divided into five characteristic periods: mycelium growing winter, mushroom fruiting spring, mushroom fruiting early summer, mushroom nonfruiting summer and mushroom fruiting autumn. First, the mycelium growing winter was December to early March with daily mean temperature of $-1{\sim}8^{\circ}C$. Second, mushroom fruiting spring was mid March to late May with daily mean temperature of $8{\sim}21^{\circ}C$ and day-night temperature difference of $15^{\circ}C$. Third, the Mushroom fruiting early summer was early June to early July with 17 to $25^{\circ}C$. Fourth, nonfruiting summer was mid July to mid August with daily mean temperature of $25{\sim}28^{\circ}C$. Lastly, mushroom fruiting autumn was late August to October with daily mean temperature of $10{\sim}23^{\circ}C$ and with cyclic temperature change by $7^{\circ}C$ decrease and 5 increase every 5 to 7 days. In a Chinese type shed, temperature ranged $-1.9{\sim}5.0^{\circ}C$ during winter and $15{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ during June to October. Temperature and relative humidity changed $12{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ and 40~100%, respectively, depending on 0~150 cm shelf heights of by positions in the shed. In conclusion, to grow L. edodes but to discourage contaminating fungi, that is, not to be too high in temperature and RH, the growers changed temperature and RH by adjusting shading, aeration and insulation in the shed.

  • Phylogenic relationships and morphological characteristics were classified and investigated among the 233 collected strains of Agaricus spp. The 38 strains were differently identified as different characteristic group using analysis of ITS regions in rDNA. A. bitorquis was showed close relationship in groupA whereas A. campestris was in groupC as different characteristic group among with A. bisporus. There was no phylogentic difference with strains collected by country and different pileus colored Agaricus bisporus. Also the strains were cultivated twice to investigate morphological characteristics of fruiting bodies. The characteristics and yield of collected strains were compared with molecular varieties and seasons by the cultivation. In this result, A. campestirs showed good yield and quality in terms of hardness off-white mushroom was more harder than other number of A. bisporus. Also earliness and color of pileus was influenced by external environment all conditions.

  • Planting date shift is one of the means of adapting to climate change in Kimchi Cabbage growers in major production areas in Korea. This study suggests a method to estimate the potential yield of Kimchi Cabbage based on daily temperature accumulation during the growth period from planting to maturity which is determined by a plant phenology model tuned to Kimchi Cabbage. The phenology model converts any changes in the thermal condition caused by the planting date shift into the heat unit accumulation during the growth period, which can be calculated from daily temperatures. The physiological maturity is estimated by applying this model to a variable development rate function depending either on growth or heading stage. The cabbage yield prediction model (Ahn et al., 2014) calculates the potential yield of summer cabbage by accumulating daily heat units for the growth period. We combined these two models and applied to the 1km resolution climate scenario (2000-2100) based on RCP8.5 for South Korea. Potential yields in the current normal year (2001-2010) and the future normal year (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100) were estimated for each grid cell with the planting dates of July 1, August 1, September 1, and October 1. Based on the results, we divided the whole South Korea into 810 watersheds, and devised a three - dimensional evaluation chart of the time - space - yield that enables the user to easily find the optimal planting date for a given watershed. This method is expected to be useful not only for exploring future new cultivation sites but also for developing cropping systems capable of adaptation to climate change without changing varieties in existing production areas.

  • This project was conducted to measure actual temperature, relative humidity (RH), and light intensity at different apartment floors and to suggest suitable indoor plants by investigating morphological changes of Treophelosparmum asiatioum and Fittonia verchaffeltii var. argyroneura as affected by light intensity. Temperature and RH in apartment verandas were measured in three different (2nd, 9th, and 16th) floors on three different buildings for 30 days seasonally. The light intensity, temperature, and RH were recorded outside (parking area) and inside apartment verandas for 24 hours on a selected sunny summer day (between Aug. 19 and Sept. 14, 2008). Based on the first study, we investigated effect of simulated light intensity (40, 70, 100, and $600{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) on changes in growth and development of T. asiatioum and F. verchaffeltii var. argyroneurain growth chambers. However, daily mean light intensity of 2nd, 9th, and 16th floors was different each other as it was about 40, 70, and $100{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively. In the growth chamber experiment, plant height, internode length, and leaf length and width were not affected significantly by light intensity, but changes in leaf color were apparent in the new leaves with the increasing light intensity. The results suggest that T. asiatioum could be best fit to high, and F. verchaffeltii var. argyroneura to lower floor verandas, considering their aesthetic values.

  • This experiment investigated the characteristics of salted and fresh Chinese cabbages of different cultivars and using various cultivation methods. We measured the numbers of leaves, sizes, thicknesses, moisture contents, and firmness qualities of fresh Chinese cabbage grown in a plastic house, and outdoors. 'The bulb sizes, leaf thicknesses, and moisture contents of leaves were higher after plastic house cultivation than after growth in the field. Plastic house culture increased the growth rate of Chinese cabbage. Firmness and osmolarity showed better values after outdoor cultivation, however. The growth rates and the levels of chemical components were affected by interactions between cultivation methods and cultivars of Chinese cabbage. The salt levels of salted Chinese cabbage were 1.21.7% (w/w) after cabbages cultivated outdoors were preserved, and 0.91.2 % (w/w) after vegetables grown in a plastic house were treated. The quality properties of postharvest Chinese cabbages after salting varied with cultivation method even when the same cultivars of Chinese cabbage were used. The salt contents of salted Chinese cabbage thus varied with different cultivation methods. The results indicate that the properties of Chinese cabbage vary with the culture systems adapted.

  • After the strongest El Niño since 2015 occurred in 2023, there has been a growing interest in understanding its impacts on rice yield in South Korea. We investigated the impact of El Niño during the rice-growing season on rice yield by analyzing the correlation between detrended rice yield data and ONI (Oceanic Niño Index) values exceeding 0.5. The results show a positive correlation between ONI intensities and detrended rice yields. Furthermore, we found that variations in sunshine duration, precipitation, and typhoon activity affect detrended yield values positively and negatively. This pattern was similar to the classification of El Niño into Cold Tongue El Niño and non-Cold Tongue El Niño, which showed positive and negative detrended rice yield values, respectively. This observation suggests that predicting yield based on ONI intensity during Cold Tongue El Niño years may be feasible to some extent.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the hydroponic culture possibility and the optimal solution strength of 'Pechika' ever-bearing strawberry in summer highland. Maximum room temperature and minimum root zone temperature of plastic house were $30.8^{\circ}C\;and\;19^{\circ}C$ in highland respectively and $4^{\circ}C\;and\;3^{\circ}C$ lower than in level and. The growth of 'Pechika' was better in highland. There was effective in producing the good yield and fruit quality in highland and the deformed fruits also were decreased. The soluble solid and titratable acidity content increased in highland. Early growth was the most effective in standard solution $(EC\;0.75dS\;m^{-1})$ and had a tendency to be inhibition with increasing nutrient concentration. Standard solution was also the highest to yield about 2,064kg/10a among treatments, and 2/3S, 4/3S, 5/3S by turns. The browning roots and root activity increased when the solution strength was increased, especially in EC $1.25dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The soluble solids and acidity content of fruits were increased with higher solution strength. Therefor, the summer hydroponic culture of 'Pechika' ever-bearing strawberry was suitable in highland and effective in standard solution $(EC\;0.75dS{\cdot}m^{-1})$ in solution control.

  • In Korea, oyster mushroom is one of the commonly cultivated mushrooms. In 2013, the cultivation areas and products of oyster mushrooms were 60,039 M/T and 201 ha, respectively. Many species of oyster mushrooms are cultivated in various countries. These include Pleurotus ostreatus, P. florida, P. sajor-caju, P. eryngii, P. citrinopileatus, P. salmoneostramineus and P. cystidiosus. P. citrinopileatus is a yellow oyster mushroom famous for its health benefits such as anti-cancer and anti-oxidant effects. Therefore, a cultivar P. citrinopileatus 'Jangdari' was developed to improve yield and the ability to grow well at lower temperatures. Two parent strains 'Gumbit (KMCC02150)' and 'KMCC02145' were selected based on their morphological characteristics. 'Jangdari' was developed by the method of Mon-Mon crossing between monokaryons derived from 'Gumbit' and 'KMCC02145', and finally selected through continuous cultivation tests. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $30^{\circ}C$. The cultivar could grow well at high temperatures, especially $16{\sim}24^{\circ}C$. Fruiting body production per bottle (850 mL) was about 90.0 g. Stipe length and thickness of 'Jangdari' were similar to those of 'Gumbit'. 'Jangdari' was more resistant to low temperature than 'Gumbit', and thus it could be cultivated with oyster mushrooms (P. ostreatus). In addition, while cultivating 'Jangdari', it is not required to scrape out the upper side of bottle's sawdust medium; hence, its cultivation is expected to save energy and time.
