  • The major purpose of this study was to explore care giving experiences of mothers, who have their children with borderline intellectual functioning disorder. The core analytical strategy was to find out the essential meaning of caring their children. For this purpose, eight mothers were participated in depth interview, which conducted during October, 2011 through July 2012. The face-to-face interview repeated two or three times based on phenomenological perspective. The interview suggested two major findings: changing mother's view from raising retarded children to caregiving a child with growing-up substantially slow speed; the essence of nurturing experiences for mothers, whose children have borderline intellectual functioning, was to watching with attention rather than advocating ownership. This result can be also found in Barshow's concept of 'watching' rather than 'possession', which is suggested by Tennyson. However, the essential meaning of this concept was associated with 'watching with care', which was originated form Goethe's notion of 'existence'. Mother's of children with borderline intellectual functioning have reached a point of view: when creating a parent-child relationship, it was essential that the child was not 'my child', but was 'a child' per se. This type of parent-child relationship was a result of giving up a desire that the child raised within mother's boundary. It was also a result of psychological warfare and conflict in mother's mind. To internalized this view, it is recommended that the mothers implement the following three perspectives: first, the mothers put down overly-pushed motive toward their children; second, they enhance their level of understanding toward their child; third, it is necessary that the mothers build a new sense of existence through matching their level of concern with their children.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of maternal risk factors for adverse childhood experiences on children's emotional and physical abuse and neglect as well as parenting stress. Methods : This is a secondary data analysis study utilizing raw data from the 2017 National Survey of Child and Family Life Experiences. A total of 1,937 mothers with at least one adverse childhood experience were categorized into low-risk (1-3), moderate-risk (4-6), and high-risk (7 or more) groups to examine the differences in children's emotional and physical abuse and neglect and parenting stress and identify the influencing factors through regression analysis. Results : Maternal adverse childhood experiences were 50.4% in the low-risk group, 39.8% in the medium-risk group, and 9.7% in the high-risk group. Child emotional abuse was 45.0%, child physical abuse was 13.2%, child neglect was 3.5%, and parenting stress was 2.13 (±0.61) on average. Adverse childhood experiences were significantly more likely to be associated with emotional and physical abuse, neglect, and parenting stress in the medium- and high-risk groups than in the low-risk group. The regression analysis showed that the model explained 35% of child emotional abuse, 25% of child physical abuse, 19% of child neglect, and 16% of parenting stress. Conclusion : The higher the risk of adverse childhood experiences of parents, the more their children experience emotional abuse, physical abuse, child neglect, and parenting stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine a mother's and her two son's 'practice of mutual respect rights' experiences, and to find a solution to inspire the practice of realizing rights of mutual respect within a family. From September 2012 to March 2013, qualitative research methods such as transcripts, observations, in-depth interviews, and analysis of records were applied to a mother and her two sons. As a result, the mother's experiences showed that she and her two sons had enough mutual respect, and the regression of the first child was a natural and positive part in that process. Also, conflicts between protection rights and participation rights were integrated into a practice of mutual respect, and the mother had an opportunity to think about positive discipline. With this practice, the mother and her two sons were able to reconcile their relationships and have deep respect for one another, and family members felt psychologically safe through this practice of rights. In addition, the practice of rights was transferred to other family members, and the mother came to have courage about being an adequate parent. The results of this study revealed that the following research could be used to propose concrete contents and to plan how to recognize and access the practice of rights among family members.

  • Using data collected from Korean mothers (N=429) with preschool children (aged 3 to 5 years) in 12 day care centers in Seoul, this study aims to empirically demonstrate the different pathways acute and chronic stress affect parenting efficacy of mothers according to the income group to which they belong. Analytic results show mothers in the low-income group show higher levels of depressive symptoms than mothers in the middle-income group, and the former also show more frequent and higher levels of acute and chronic stress than the latter. The mediation model results show that acute stress and chronic stress did not directly affect parenting efficacy, but rather indirectly affect parenting efficacy through maternal depressive symptoms. Acute stress and chronic stress are both significant factors affecting depressive symptoms with chronic stress exerting greater influence. When the total effect was analyzed, chronic stress has a greater effect on parenting efficacy than acute stress. The effect of chronic stress on maternal depressive symptoms is greater on low-income mothers than middle-income mothers, while the effect of acute stress on maternal depressive symptoms and the effect of those symptoms on parenting efficacy are greater on middle class families than low-income families. In order to maximize effective parenting in high-risk situations, the psychological welfare of mothers needs to be protected from the environmental difficulties they face. Based on the results, policies to support women and parents at the national and social levels are discussed.

  • This study was aimed at looking into and understanding child-rearing experience of mothers from multicultural families based on the grounded theory, one of the qualitative research methods. For this, twelve mothers from multicultural families were selected and data were collected through in-depth interviews with them and then analyzed through the open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The analysis suggested that main phenomena mothers from multicultural families experienced are the conflict of child-rearing and educational crisis, and the confused identity of parenting. These main phenomena had much to do with contextual factors such as economic hardship, lower level of the Korean language, cultural differences, prejudices and ignorance. The severeness of conflict and crisis of child-rearing and the intensity of identity confusion for parenting depended on arbitral conditions such as family bonds, positive expectation for the future of their children, and the help of supportive systems. Mothers were dealing with difficulties of child-rearing through action and interaction of resignation and denial, introspection and the intention to overcome difficulties, and the capacity building. As a result, mothers from multicultural families acknowledged that there is a limit to their position and roles they can play and tried to change in order to resolve problems related to their children, positioning themselves for more active lives in Korean society. Through discussion based on the findings of the study, this study can help better understand child-rearing experience of mothers from multicultural families and suggest several directions for future researches on multicultural families.

Total 17 mothers who have experience of caring for severely disabled child participated. In-depth interviews was done from January 2010 to May 2011. Three to seven interviews were done for each participant. As a result of this study, 119 concepts, 41 subordinate categories and 20 categories have been revealed. The experience of caring children with severe disabilities were 'desolate life' 'plunging in darkness' 'managing to pull oneself' 'rising again' and 'rediscovering of life'. The core category of selective coding was rediscovering of new life from life in darkness. It is suggested that welfare policies need to be modified and new policies need to established for mothers who care for severely disabled children.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of the essence through the parenting experience of the mother with ADHD child and to divide the parenting experience into the domains and categories. The data was collected through several depth interviews with 12 semi-structured questionnaires of the mother with ADHD child. The analysis of the data has adopted a consensus qualitative research method(CQR) that describes the phenomenon based on the collected data and can deduce inductive conclusions. Through CQR, various experiences of ADHD mothers were deeply analyzed. Through the consensus process, 12 cases were combined and quantified to understand the overall pattern and specificity. As a result, 11 domains and 51 categories were derived. The 11 areas were classified as 'Ignorance of ADHD symptom', 'Confronting ADHD diagnosis', 'Peripheral reaction after ADHD diagnosis', 'Acceptance of ADHD diagnosis', 'Ambivalence for medication', 'ADHD active treatment intervention', 'Family support','Social support', 'Social perception change', and 'Mature parent'. This suggests that early treatment and intervention for ADHD child is significant. Also, appropriate intervention is required based on accurate understanding through acceptance of ADHD diagnosis and that parent education can lead to positive life for child and mother of ADHD. Finally, based on this, I made suggestions the future research.
