  • The purpose of this study is to try to structuralize the perception of the mothers of science-gifted elementary students using the concept mapping approach. The mothers who participated in this research had children who were 5th and 6th graders selected as science-gifted by a regional education office, a science high school and two national universities in a city. One of the authors interviewed 26 mothers, and extracted 50 general statements of their perceptions about the career path of their children. Ten mothers who participated in interviews sorted a shuffled pack of statement cards. The categorization of the statements into the dissimilarity matrix was carried out by SPSS multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to generate a conceptual diagram. After that 140 mothers rated each statement using a Likert-type response scale from one to five. The result showed six clusters of parental views such as were 'Burden of private education, grades and going to the next grade,' 'Thinking about career guidance in gifted education and school,' 'Parental roles in child career education,' 'Difficulties in career guidance at home,' 'Demand for strengthening the parental capacity for career guidance,' and 'Demand for social support.' 'Demand for social support' obtained the highest sympathy from mothers of elementary science gifted.

  • This study compared the parenting education needs of mothers and grandmothers who are rearing toddlers (12~36 months old), in order to examine how to resolve conflicts and problems caused by inconsistencies in the parenting attitudes of these caregivers. The findings will provide basic data for the development of a consistent parenting education program. The participants in this study were 201 mothers and 201 grandmothers who were all rearing toddlers. Data was collected at 11 daycare center in C city, Gyeongsangnamdo from August 1, 2017 to October 12, 2017. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and independent t-tests. As a result of comparing the parenting education needs of mothers and grandmothers, the overall evaluation of education needs was rated as 2.82±0.58 for mothers and 2.81±0.63 for grandmothers on a scale of 4, and there were no statistically significant differences in all five domains (t=0.21, p=.836). The highest education needs were found in the prevention and management of disease and injury, and the lowest was in the physical caring. Based on the results of this study, a toddler parenting education program was developed after selecting contents focusing on the prevention and management of disease and injury domain where education needs are high. We propose a study to examine the effects of applying such a program to both mothers and grandmothers who are rearing toddlers.

Four hundred forty-one mothers who have toddlers under 36 months-old were surveyed using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using frequency and logistic regression. Results of this study were as follows: It was found that 30.9% of mothers were providing English education to their toddlers. They started English education when their toddlers were between 24 months and 36 months because of parents' decision or English education in child care centers. 'The reality of the after school care class that the mother sees' is 'the overall level of after school care class is low', 'the probability of selecting the same as a lottery', 'the quality of education that varies depending on the level of the teacher', 'for the child attending the care class negative awareness'. 'Mother's policy demands for after school care classes' are presented as 'positioning as a substitute for thinking and caring', 'improvement of separation between parents' expectations', 'expansion of care recipients', 'request for resilient management'. As the conclusion of this study, first, after school care classes need to focus on the care function. Second, it is necessary to operate after school care classes by level. Third, the realistic needs of mothers should be reflected so that after school care classes can be positioned as alternatives to private education.
