  • This study aims to observe the impact of mothers' child-rearing stress on the development of 3-month-old, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding infants. For this purpose, a survey based on the K-ASQ scale was conducted on a sample of 533 3-month-old infants and their mothers in the Seoul and Kyeong-gi area. The results of the study are as follows. First, breastfeeding mothers felt less child-rearing stress than their non-breastfeeding counterparts, especially in parent-role stress. Second, breastfeeding infants exhibited a better personal sociality than non-breastfeeding infants. Third, it was found that mothers' child-rearing stress had an impact on all aspects of infant development in breastfeeding infants, and especially in the development of communicational skills, having an impact of 12.4%. However, in non-breastfeeding infants, mothers' child-rearing stress had an impact only on communication and personal sociality development and exhibited a nonsignificant impact on other aspects. Lastly, it was found that mothers' parent-role stress, out of all aspects of child-rearing stress, was the main factor of negative impact on infant development in both breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding infants. Based on the results of this study, I have suggested family-level and society-level support measures to reduce mothers' parent-role stress and promote breastfeeding.

(National Survey of Family and Households)에서 추출했다.

  • Using a subsample of 3,409 unmarried smothers and their children from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, the present study examined the cross-lagged effects of unmarried fathers' involvement on their children's behavior problems. Father involvement was used as a latent variable to measure the frequency of fathers' visits to the child, fathers' instrumental support, and their supportive parenting. Both variables of father involvement and child behavior problems were repeatedly measured at child ages 3, 5, and 9 to estimate their trends over time. The results indicated that fathers' more active engagement in parenting at child ages 3 to 5 reduced behavior problems in children at ages 5 to 9. Further discussions include programs and services to support unmarried fathers through education and training opportunities for effective parenting, relationship skills, and conflict resolutions as well as policy strategies to encourage their continuous involvement in the lives of their children.

Data were collected from six working mothers from a child care center in Gyeonggi, and their six grandmothers who were rearing grandchildren through in-depth interviews, emails and observation based on the instruction of semi-structured interviews. For analysis, a phenomenological analysis method is used. As a result, 78 meaning units, 15 sub-elements and 6 theme categories were drawn. Theme categories were (1) grandmothers' rearing experience; perform a double-role through grandchildren-rearing (2) working moms' rearing experience; conflicts over ideologue of motherhood (3) grandmothers' rearing positive effect: increasing grandmothers' efficacy and intimate relationships with grandchildren (4) working moms' rearing positive effect: reducing working moms' children-rearing stress (5) negative effect: increasing grandmothers' children-rearing stress and working moms' low children-rearing efficacy (6) rearing conflicts: the two mothers' conflicts over children-rearing values. • The current study aimed at examining the structural relationships among coparenting, fathers' involvement in child rearing and the children's participation in housework. 154 fathers and their 5th or 6th grade children living in Jeju participated in the study. The data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Model(SEM) technique. The results revealed that when the fathers reported greater alliance in their coparenting, they were more likely to participate in child rearing. Fathers' involvement significantly predicted greater housework participation of their school-aged children. Higher levels of undermining and gate-keeping in coparenting were associated with less father involvement, which in turn, predicted less housework participation by their children. Gatekeeping also directly predicted lower levels of housework of children. Father involvement significantly mediated the relationship between coparenting and children's housework. The implications for the education/intervention programs promoting coparenting and father involvement were further discussed.
