To determine the mechanism of the resistance to organophosphorus insecticide, chlorpyrifos, in diamondback-moth (Plutella xylostella L.), activities of esterases, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and AChE insensitivity which were known for causing factor of resistance were measured. Also, the relationship between AChE insensitivity and the resistant ratio was investigated to inquiry the cross-resistance. The resistant ratio of chlorpyrifos-resistant strain (CRS) of diamondback-moth at the 6th generation was developed 160 fold compared to susceptible strain (SS) one. Activity of GST that are extracted from CRS was 1.7-fold higher than that from SS. However, activity of total esterases from CRS was similar to that from SS. In AChE insensitivity test, CRS was 11.8-fold less sensitive than that from SS. CRS was ranged from 17.6 to 33.6-fold less sensitive than SS to other insecticides having same target site with chlorpyrifos such as dichlorvos, dimethylvinphos and carbofuran. Insensitivity of AChE to phenthoate-oxon, however, was 1.7-fold. Resistance of CRS was 82-fold, 47-fold and 42-fold higher than SS to dichlorvos, dimethylvinphos and carbofuran, respectively, but 2.3-fold to phenthoate and then we could identify that the resistance development of insecticide might have a lot of difference among the chemicals with the same target site. The relationship between the AChE insensitivity and the resistant ratio was significantly correlated$(r=0.9951^{**},\;p^{(0.01)}$. This result indicates that AChE insensitivity was associated with insecticide resistance. Overall, these results suggest that insensitivity of AChE was an important factors to chlorpyrifos resistance in diamondback-moth, and the slightly increased activity of GST may also have contributed to that.
Disease control activities of 230 triazolyl quinoline derivatives were investigated against six plant diseases such as rice blast, rice sheath blight, tomato gray mold, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust (WLR) and barley powdery mildew (BPM). New triazolyl quinolines, KSI-4315 and KSI-4317 exhibited a great in vivo control activities against WLR and BPM, and then were selected for further tests such as preventive, curative, systemic, and persistence against WLR and BPM. The KSI-4315 and KSI-4317 contained MeS moiety and MsO moiety in carbon 4-position, respectively. They possessed both preventive activity and curative activity against WLR and BPM. KSI-4317 showed the better control activity than KSI-4315 against BPM, while KSI-4315 represented the better antifungal activity against WLR. Good persistence of KSI-4315 and KSI-4317 were also observed against WLR and BPM. Persistence of KSI-4315 was similar to that of KSI-4317 on WLR, but KSI-4317 was superior to KSI-4315 on BPM in its persistence. Systemic disease control of KSI-4315 and KSI-4317 was investigated by examining translaminar activity from leaf-under-surface to leaf-upper-surface, systemic activities by leaf to leaf movement and the effect of drenching treatment. Systemicities of KSI-4315 and KSI-4317 were not observed in wheat, but KSI-4317 showed more predominant systemicity than KSI-4315 in barley. These results suggest that KSI-4317 would potentially control WLR and BPM in the fields.
The purpose of this study was to establish the intergrated control of rice insect pests. Specific objectives were to reveal the diversity of natural enemies in rice field environment, to obtain basic informations of their population dynamics, and to screen the selective insecticides for the conservation of natural enemies. The results of the study were as follows. 1. In numbers of species and in numbers of each species of parasitic Hymenoptera of rice insect pests were more diverse and abundant in rice paddy leeves and banks than paddy fields. Braconid Mymarid and pteromalid were predominated in the field and their population was high during early August to mid September. 2. Of the predatory spiders, Pirata subpiraticus was the largest in number and amounted to 72% of the total, Gnatonarium dentatum, Pachygnatha clerki and Clubiona japonicola were the next. It was also found that P. subpiraticus had three generations in a year. 3. Hence the activities of the predatory spider species and parasitic Hymenoptera were high in early to mid August and September, it would be better promising to avoid chemical applications at this time of periods as possible. 4. The relative toxicity of several insecticides which have been used for the control of brown plant hopper (BPH) showed that P. subpiraticus was 1.1-73.1 times higher than BPH and G. dentatum to P. subpiraticus was 1.1-73.1 times, respectively. 5. Three conventional insecticides, Padan, Diazinon and Carbofuran were screened for toxicity to predatory spider species. The insecticides deffered in their toxicity to the predators. However, Padan was appeared to be the least toxic to the predators.
Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) had been the problematic weed for Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) fairway since it shows light green color all year. Experiment was carried out to determine the best herbicides combination to control creeping bentgrass in Kentucky bluegrass. fairway without injury. To investigate the efficacy of herbicides, five post-emergence herbicides of asulam WG ($87.6\%$), imazaquin SL ($20\%$), fenoxaprop-P-ethyl EC ($7\%$), mecoprop SL ($50\%$), triclopyr-TEA SL ($30\%$) and one pre-emergence herbicide pendimethalin EC ($31.7\%$) treated on 21 Sept. and 10 Nov. 2003. Kentucky bluegrass visual quality evaluated 30 and 50 days after application for phytotoxic effects of the herbicides. As a result, asulam WG (0.2g/$m^{2}$) and imazaquin SL (0.3ml/$m^{2}$) showed approximately $90\%$ of control in creeping bentgrass, but visual quality of Kentucky bluegrass significantly decreased from 20 to 50DAT (day after treatment). However, creeping bentgrass was acceptably controlled(over $80\%$) by fenoxaprop-P-ethyl EC (0.4ml/$m^{2}$)+triclopyr-TEA SL(0.3 ml/$m^{2}$) applied twice on 21 Sept. and 1 Oct. 2003 without serious injury on Kentucky bluegrass. Therefore, it is suggested that an application of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl EC (0.4ml/ $m^{2}$)+triclopyr-TEA SL (0.3 ml/$m^{2}$) may be more effective to control creeping bentgrass in Kentucky bluegrass with the least phytotoxicity by herbicides.

This research was conducted to determine the alternative tool of chemical spray for rice cultivation using the unmanned helicopter(Yamaha, R-Max Type 2G-remote controlled system) at farmer's field in Korea. The unmanned helicopter tested was introduced form Japan. In Korea the application of chemicals by machine sprayer for pest management in rice cultivation has been ordinarily used at the farmer's level. However, it involved a relatively high cost and laborious for the small scale of cultivation per farm household. Farm population has been highly decreased to 7.5% in 2002 and the population is expected to rapidly reduce by 3.5% in 2012. In Japan, pest control depending on unmanned helicopter has been increased by leaps and bounds. This was due in part to the materialization of the low-cost production technology under agricultural policy and demand environmentally friendly farm products. The practicability of the unmanned helicopter in terms of super efficiency and effectiveness has been proven, and the farmers have understood that the unmanned helicopter is indispensable in the future farming system that they visualized. Also, the unmanned helicopter has been applied to rice, wheat, soybean, vegetables, fruit trees, pine trees for spraying chemicals and/or fertilizers in Japan Effect of disease control by unmanned helicopter was partially approved against rice blast and sheath blight. However, the result was not satisfactory due to the weather conditions and cultural practices. The spray density was also determined in this experiment at 0, 15, 30, and 60cm height from the paddy soil surface and there was 968 spots at 0cm, 1,560 spots at 15cm, 1,923 spots at 30cm, and 2,999 spots at 60cm height. However, no significant difference was found among the treatments. At the same time, there was no phytotoxicity observed under the chemical stray using this unmanned helicopter, nor the rice plant itself was damaged by the wind during the operation.

This study was conducted to investigate efficient adjuvants to increase herbicidal efficacy of metabolites from Streptpmyces scopuliridis KR-001. Commonly used 21 adjuvants mixed with the metabolites were applied to eight weed species (six grass weeds and two broadleaved weeds). Based on the visual evaluation, two adjuvants, LE7 (Polyoxyethylene lauryl ether) and EP4C (Sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate), were selected as most efficient adjuvants to elevate herbicidal efficacy of the metabolites. Higher efficacy in the LE7 and EP4C was obtained when overall spray volume was $2,000L\;ha^{-1}(65{\mu}g\;a.i.\;ml^{-1})$ than $1,000L\;ha^{-1}(130{\mu}g\;a.i.\;ml^{-1})$. Field study demonstrated that $1,300{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ of metabolites from KR-001 applied with EP4C at concentration of $2{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ provided a highly effective post-emergence weed control which was almost equivalent to the glufosinate-ammonium at $540g\;a.i.\;ha^{-1}$. On the basis of these results, combination and multiple application methods could be developed to enhance herbicidal efficacy of metabolites from KR-001.
Alternative spraying was developed using fungicides and potassium phosphonate to control watermelon powdery mildew (WPM) caused by Sphaerotheca fusca under greenhouse condition. In 2010 trial, a total of 9 combinations of 6 fungicides which are legally registered in Korea and currently used on watermelon farms were tested for the control efficacy against WPM. Though the combination of chlorothalonil (Chl)-myclobutanil (My)-fenarimol (Fen)-hexaconazole (Hex) was the most effective (82.6%) in the first-year trial, it had the problem that My, Fen and Hex have the same mode of action. Therefore, in the second-year trial to improve the fungicide combination and to reduce fungicide application, fungicides and potassium phosphonate (P) combinations were tested for WPM control using 500 ppm aqueous potassium phosphonate solution which is both eco-friendly and showing different mode of action from the fungicides tested. The P-My-Fen-Hex applied at 10-day intervals provided relatively high control (75.6%), whereas Chl-My-Fen-P provided 31.8% control. To improve the control, fungicides and P were applied at 7-day intervals in the third-year trial. Though Chl-My-Fen-Hex provided the highest control (89.6%), P-My-Fen-Hex also provided relatively high control (83.5%) compared to 65.9 % control with Chl-My-Fen-P, which suggests that Chl-My-Fen-Hex could be replaced with P-My-Fen-Hex for WPM control.
Clubroot of Chinese cabbage by Plasmodiophora brassicae, was found to be high virulent to the Chinese cabbage, turnips and cabbage. It this study, the endophytic bacteria Flavobacterium hercynium EPB-C313, which was isolated from tissues of Chinese cabbage, was investigated the antimicrobial activity on the inactivation of resting spores and its control effect on clubroot disease by bioassay. The bacterial cells, culture solutions, and culture filtrates of F. hercynium EPB-C313 inactivate the resting spores of P. brassicae with 90.4, 36.8, and 26.0%, respectively. The clubroot was inhibited with 100% by dipping the seedlings of Chinese cabbage in culture solutions of F. hercynium EPB-C313 before planting, however the chemmical 'fluazinam' was 91.7% in pot tests. Complex treatment were highly enhanced control efficacy with 63.7% at field of 50% diseased plants by soil incorporation with the pellet contains organic matter and F. hercynium EPB-C313, seedling drench of culture solution of F. hercynium EPB-C313 and soil drench with 10 days after planting. These results imply that the F. hercynium EPB-C313 is a very useful biological control agent of clubroot disease of Chinese cabbage.
[ $\beta$ ]-Ketoacetoanilide chloride derivatives containing a substituent at 4 in phenyl group (para) reduced specifically the development of tomato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. Among $\beta$ketoacetoanilide chloride derivatives, five (KIST163, KIST170, KIST260, KIST263, and KIST267) were selected and tested for their protective, curative, systemic, persistent activities, and disease control efficacy against tomato late blight on adult plants. They exhibited a strong l-day protective activity and $EC_{50}$ of KIST163 and KIST170 were 21.9 and $14.5{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. However, they had little curative and systemic activities. Good persistence of KIST163 and KIST170 on tomato plants were observed against P. infestans; both KIST163 and KIST170 at $100{\mu}g/mL$ showed control values more than 75% in a 7-day protective applications. In addition, the two chemicals effectively controlled the occurrence of P. infestans on adult tomato plants. These results indicate that five $\beta$-ketoacetoanilide chloride derivatives are foliar fungicides with a preventive action and KIST163 and KIST170 have a potential for the control of tomato late blight in the fields.
Disease control activities of the methanol extracts from 27 plant species were investigated against six plant diseases such as rice blast, rice sheath blight, tomato gray mold, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust and barley powdery mildew. The extracts of Humulus japonicus, Hosta longipes, Liriope platyphylla, and Astragalus membranaceus exhibited a great in vivo control activity against rice blast. Similarly, the extracts of Commelina communis and A. membranaceus were highly active on tomato gray mold and barley powdery mildew, respectively. The extracts of H. longipes, L. platyphylla, Solanum nigrum and A. membranaceus showed especially high disease control activity against wheat leaf rust, and then were selected for further tests such as protective, curative, systemic, and lasting activity against wheat leaf rust. The extracts of L. platyphylla and S. nigrum were strong protectant, and that of A. membranaceus possessed both a preventive activity and a curative activity. Systemic disease control by the selected four plant extracts was investigated by examing translaminar activity from leaf-under-surface to leaf-upper-surface and systemic activity by leaf-to-Ieaf movement. All extracts strongly controlled wheat leaf rust by translaminar movement, but hardly controlled the disease by leaf-to-leaf movement. Good lasting activity was also observed against wheat leaf rust from all of the tested extracts. Especially, disease control experiments on wheat seedlings sprayed with the extracts of S. nigrum or H. longipes 7 days prior to inoculation represented control value over 95%. These results suggest that methanol extracts of H. longipes, L. platyphylla, S. nigrum, and A. membranaceus, especially S. nigrum, would potently control wheat leaf rust caused by Puccinia recondita in the fields.
