  • In the present study, a numerical model using Boussinesq equation is set up to predict the interacted equilibrium between waves and their induced currents in the occurrence of breaking waves over an underwater shoal, and the numerical results are compared with results of existing hydraulic experiments. A sensitivity analysis has been done to find out appropriate values of breaking wave parameters with the result (regular wave case) of Vincent and Briggs (1989)’ experiment. Then the numerical model is applied to the irregular wave cases of the experiment and the hydraulic model test of Ieodo which is a natural undersea shoal. The results show that a strong current forms in the wave direction at the downstream side of the shoals, causing the attenuation of wave heights there. The calculated wave heights generally show a similar pattern with the measured data.

  • We have studied on the maritime navigation with functions of navigation route search and maritime safety information for small-size fishery ships, fishing boats, yachts, and boats in coastal seas. We have designed a smart phone application which is more exact information on marine obstacles of islands, aquafarms, and rocks by using land navigation techniques. Our navigation system is relatively easy to be used for costal navigation and may be a substitute for expensive ECDIS(Electronic Chart Display and Information System). Our system consists of maritime navigation databases to manage necessary maritime data and a mobile application to support maritime navigation for operators. We believe that our research findings can improve safety navigation in coastal seas by supporting lower cost, no time-consuming installation and maintenance, and easy-to-use operations.

  • In this paper, we present a method to detect an object such as ship, rock and buoy from sea IR image for the safety navigation. To this end, we do the image smoothing first and the apply watershed algorithm to segment image into subregions. Since watershed algorithm almost always produces over-segmented regions, it requires posterior merging process to get meaningful segmented regions. We propose an efficient merger algorithm that requires only two times of direct access to the pixels regardless of the number of regions. Also by analyzing IR image obtained from sea environments, we could find out that most horizontal edge come out from object regions. For the given input IR image we extract horizontal edge and eliminate isolated edges produced from background and noises by adopting morphological operator. Among the segmented regions, the regions that have horizontal edges are extracted as final results. Experimental results show the adequacy of the proposed method.

  • Ratio and rate are key topics in the area of 'Patterns', but there are various perspectives on them. This study compared and analyzed the perspectives of Korean and Singaporean mathematics textbooks on ratio and rate, and explored how teaching and learning methods develop according to each perspective in terms of quantitative reasoning. To this end, we reorganized the analysis criteria based on some studies, and analyzed the textbooks of the two countries in relation to context, relationship, and representation. The results of the study are as follows. Regarding the context, there were differences in the situations, types of units and use of units of the problems presented in textbooks. In terms of relationship, there were differences in the types of two quantities and relationship of quantities. Lastly, there were differences in the representation of ratio and rate. Through these results, we found that elementary mathematics textbooks in Korea and Singapore take different perspectives on ratio and rate. In particular, the perspective taken by Korean textbooks on ratio and rate had unique points different from that of other previous studies. Considering this Korean perspective, we suggested some implications that could help improve textbooks related to ratio and rate and teach them meaningfully.

  • Sea level rise due to climate change is an increasing concern for the international community, and especially for coastal States. In case of regression of the coastal line or inundations of maritime features, including islands, the questions of whether coastal States are under an obligation to redraw their baseline and the outer limits of their maritime jurisdiction and of whether the existing maritime boundary treaties should be terminated are raised. This article reviews the arguments raised by the Small Island Developing States, International Law Association, and International Law Commission and suggests a solution within the current legal framework of the Law of the Sea through an interpretation of the existing provisions of the UNCLOS focusing on the legal issues relating to the Law of the Sea.

  • Fish assemblages associated with rock reef and non-rock reef were studied using specimens collected at three sites in Geomun Island waters of the Southern Sea, Korea, in February, May, August and October, 2006. Two survey methods for the study were followed: collection by a gill net, and video observation by scuba diving. The gill-net survey was conducted during the night, the scuba-diving observations were conducted during the day. From the gill-net survey, a total of 40 species, 380 inds. and 71,426.9 g was caught at the three sites. The dominant species was Trachurus japonicus; other species were Raja kenojei, Dasyatis akajei, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Narke japonica, Pagrus major, Sebastes inermis, and Sphyraena pinguis. At the rock-reef site, a total of 26 species, 264 inds. and 46,776.7 g was caught by gill net, and the dominant species was T. japonicus. A total of 17 species, 45 inds., 10,535.1 g was caught at the flat-bottom 1 site, and 19 species, 71 inds. and 14,115.1 g were caught at the flat-bottom 2 site. The scuba-diving survey resulted in 13 species and 1,749 inds. observed at the three sites through the survey period. The main observed fishes were rock-dwelling species such as Chromis notatus, Microcanthus strigatus, S. cirrhifer, Ditrema temmincki, Evistias acutriostris, Girella punctata, Halichoeres poecilopterus, Hexagrammos agrammus, Prionurus scalprum, Sebastes inermis, and Semicossyphus reticulatus. Seven species and 1,739 inds. observed at the rock-reef site comprised 99.4% of the inds. of the three sites. Therefore, the fish community in Geomun Island waters included many rock-reef. species, but a few were migratory species like T. japonicus and Scomber japonicus. The abundance of fish at the rock-reef site was high in comparison with those at two non-rock reefs. The dominant species were very different between the day and the night, although rock-reef species comprised the main part of the fish community. We conclude that the high abundance of fish in Geomun Island waters is most closely related to physical structure, such as rock reefs, which is the main habitat of many fishes.

  • A total of 83 surface sediments and 55 sea water samples, collected from the southwestern sea of Cheju Island, were analyzed in order to understand their textural characteristics, geochemical composition and the clay mineralogical features. The sediments were subdivided into ten textural classes, namely clayey sand, slightly gravelly muddy sand, sandy clay, clay and mud. The coarse and fine-grained mixed sediments are distributed in the northern part and around the Island, whereas the fine-grained deposits are mainly distributed in the central and southern parts of the study area; small scale mud patches are distributed in the southwestern and northern parts of Cheju Island. The high concentration of total suspended matter in study area gradually increase toward the southwestern and northwestern offshore area. The concentration of geochemical elements is as follow: the content of Mn, Al, Zn, Cr, Cu and Sn increase toward the southern part which is covered mainly with fine-grained deoposits, whereas the content of Ca, Mg and Ag is higher in the northern area; the elements such as Ni, Na, Fe and Pb are more concentrated relatively in muddy deposits rather than in sandy sediments. The light minerals such as Na-Ca feldspars show a high content around the Socotra Rock, toward the Soheugsan and Cheju Islands, but the K-feldspars are relatively high around the Cheju Island. It was noticed that the provenance of these sediments is partly influenced by the geological characteristics near the island. X-ray diffractogram for clay minerals from the southeastern mud patch and around the Soheugsan Island shows the diagnostic calcite peak indicating that the greater part of these clay fraction may have been derived from present and ancient Hwangho River. The high concentration of smectite in the northern part near the Cheju and around the Soheugsan Islands, eastern side of Socotra Rock probably result from supplies smectite altered from volcanic materials distributed in the Cheju Island and Socotra Rock, whereas the samples near the Chuja and northern parts of the Cheju Island contain weak calcite peak and high concentration of kaolinite and chlorite which is closely related to the geolgical characteristics on the adjacenting land area.

  • Community structures and fish densit were investigated on three different types of artificial reefs, dice, turtle artificial reef and tubes, constructed in the Korean waters. Variations of fish fauna according to type of artificial reef and the proper artificial reef in each area for optimizing harvest were discussed. Fish were captured by trammel gill net during May, June, September and November, 1988 and both identified and counted. Fourty-five fish species were found in the artificial reefs. Of these, Sebastes spp., Hexagrammos otakii, Pleuronectidae, Navodon modestus and Stephanolepis cirrhifer showed high occurrence-frequency. The dominant species groups were coastal settlement, demersal or rock fishes such as Pleuronectidae, Rajiformes, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Navodon modestus, Hexagrammos otakii and Sebastes spp. in all of the Artificial reefs except the oceanic area of southern waters. Scomber japonicus was predominant in the oceanic area of southern waters. Composition of demersal, rock and pelagic fishes were different depending on the types of artificial reef. Dice artificial reefs were occupied by rock fish, on the other hand turtle artificial reefs were dominated by dermersal fish. Fish density was high at the dice artificial reef in all survey areas except the middle area of Eastern waters, with high fish density evident in the Tube artificial reef. Fish community structures were remarkably different between Dice and Turtle artificial reefs. The Tube artificial reef showed intermediate characteristics between the above two types of artificial reefs. The coastal areas of Southern waters and the middle and southern areas of Western waters revealed similar fish fauna. Results from the oceanic areas of Southern waters were well associated with the middle and southern areas of Eastern waters.

  • Aids to Navigation (AtoN) is marine traffic safety facility to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of shipping and enhance the protection of the marine environment by the regulation or guideline of The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). By IALA NAVGUIDE, the term "New Danger" is defined as newly discovered hazards not yet shown in nautical documents and includes naturally occurring obstructions such as sandbanks or rocks or man-made dangers such as wrecks. 'New Dangers' should be appropriately marked using Lateral, Cardinal, Isolated Danger marks or by using the Emergency Wreck Marking Buoy. However, the Emergency Wreck Marking Buoy has difficulties with implementation conditions in terms of speed and accuracy to install the buoy. In case of sinking accidents, it is difficult immediately to install the Emergency Wreck Marking Buoy because of weather conditions, marine environments and accident position. This paper studies Auto Releasing New Danger Mark Buoy on the deck which can be automatically to release from the deck of a vessel and float in the water and quickly install the accident position in case of sinking accidents. The buoy will be to reduce the risk of navigation and prevent secondary collisions.
