  • Two storage proteins, storage protein-1 (SPl) and storage protein -2 (SP2) were found in hemolymph and fat body during the development of Lymantria dispar L. SP1 has a molecular weight of 440, 000 and consists of six identical subunits (MW = 72, 000). The pI value of SP1 was 6.2. SP1 shows a similar high concentration during the late larval stage in both male and female. However, SP1 represents a quite different pattern during pupal stage between male and female. SP1 gradually decreases in male but increases in female. SP1 is immunologically identical to yolk protein. Also, SP1 of L. dispar shows immunologically partial reactions with storage proteins of Hyphantria cunea and Galleria mellonella.

  • Life history of Korean crayfishes Cambaroides similis (Koelbel) was studied 8 month from March to October, 2006 from the Gwanak mountain, Seoul, South Korea. By capture and recapture method, 551 crayfishes were collected analyzed during the experimental period. Based on the distribution pattern of body lengths, the local population putatively divided into four age groups. The sex ratio of male and female was almost equal. However, their growth rates varied by water temperature. Early juveniles seen during June became adult during August. The study findings suggest that late autumn is mating season.

  • The aim of this study was to collect information regarding the sex ratio, size at sexual maturity, and the primary spawning period of Hexagrammos otakii. The sex ratio (female : male) was observed to be 1 : 1.2 (n =739 : 906, with females comprising 81.6% of the population). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) exhibited its highest values in November for females and October for males, coinciding with the primary spawning period from November to January. The total length required for 50% sexual maturity was determined through a logistic regression model and found to be 23.1 cm for females.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the toxicity of ethanolic extracts of Morus alba L. branch (ME). In the reverse mutation test, Salmonella Typhimurium TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1357, and Escherichia coli WP2uvrA were used to estimate the mutagenic potential of ME. Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered ME at levels of 1,250, 2,500, and 5,000 mg/kg for the single-dose toxicity test and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg/d for the repeated-dose toxicity test for 28 consecutive days. As expected, reverse mutation was not detected at any concentration of ME, regardless of application of the metabolic activation system with or without S9 mix. In the single-dose toxicity test, ME caused neither significant visible signs of toxicity nor mortality in rats, and $LD_{50}$ was estimated to be over 5,000 mg/kg. In the repeated-dose toxicity test, ME administration at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg for 28 days to male or female rats did not result in mortality. Similarly, no toxicologically significant treatment-related changes in body weight, food intake, or organ weights were noted. Several hematological and biochemical parameters in both genders showed significant differences, but these were within normal ranges. These results support the safe use of ME.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth performance and the carcass ratio of meat-type Korean Native Ducks. Four hundred twenty Korean Native Ducks' chicks were selected and divided into four treatments (7 replications/ treatment, 15 birds/replication) by strains (A and B) and gender(male and female) with $2{\times}2$ fractal factors. There was no significant difference between A and B on the body weight at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks old (P>0.05). However, body weight of female was higher at 2 weeks old than male while that of male was higher at the 8 weeks old (P<0.01). Daily feed intake of male was higher compared to female during 6~8 weeks (P<0.05). On weekly body weight gain, there was no significant difference between strains, but gained body weight of male was higher until 2 weeks old while that of female was higher during 6~8 weeks (P<0.01). On the live body weight and carcass weight by strains and genders, B strain was higher than A strains at the 8 weeks of age (P<0.01). Carcass yield was the highest at 8 weeks of age in both strains (P<0.05). These results may provided the basic data on growth performance and carcass ratio of meat-type Korean Native Ducks.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the potential acute toxicity of ethanol extracts of the aleurone layer of Oryza sativa cvs. Obongbyeo, Ilpumbyeo, and Aranghyangchalbyeo by a single oral dose in ICR mice. The test article was orally administered once by gavage to male and female mice at dose levels of 0, 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 g/kg body weight (n=10 for male and female mice for each dose). We examined numbers of deaths, general signs, weight measurement and biochemical analysis for sexes and doses of mice control and experimental groups. All mice were alive during the experimental period so can not yield death rate and $LD_{50}$. Any significant clinical symptom was not observed in all treated groups. No significant body weight changes in treatment groups in comparison with those of control groups was observed at any dose levels in experimental groups. Plasma glucose levels were valued both control and treated groups and there were no significant differences between groups. The activities of ALT and AST were not increase in all sample treated groups when compared with the control groups. The results suggest that the toxicity of Oryza sativa cvs. Obongbyeo, Ilpumbyeo, and Aranghyangchalbyeo are low and its $LD_{50}$ is over 10.0 g/kg body weight in both male and female mice.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the performance of crossbreed Korean native ducks for production of Korean native commercial ducks which are adapted to Korean environment. A total of four hundred eighty ducklings (1-d-old) of crossbreds from A and B lines (derived from National Institute of Animal Science) were used in this work and divided into 8 treatments (4 replicates/group, 15 birds/replicate) with $4{\times}2$ factors (4 groups, AA, AB, BB, BA; 2 genders, male and female). Ducks were fed diets based on corn-soybean meal for 0 to 3 wk (22.0% [CP], 2,904 kcal/kg [ME]) and 3 to 8 wk (18.0% [CP], 3,002 kcal/kg [ME]). Body weight of AA group was higher than BB and BA groups (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference on body weight at 8 wk old. Body weight gain of AB group was the highest among groups (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference on body weight gain among crossbreds at 0~3, 3~8 and 0~8 wk old. On body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio, male was higher than female at the age of 3 and 8 wk old (P<0.05, P<0.01). There was no significant difference on uniformity and livability. However, production index of male was higher than that of female (P<0.01). These results may provide the basic data on growing performance and productivity of crossbreed Korean native ducks for the production of commercial Korean native duck.

  • In order to investigate the effect of dietary protein and energy on growing female and male rats, Sprague-Dawley 90 female rats and 54 male rats of 3 weeks old weighing approximately 70-80g and 54-75g, respectively, were subjected feeding trials for 8 weeks and then subsequently to metabolic trials for 2 weeks. Three dietary energy levels(3,200, 3,600, 4,000 kcal/kg) were employed and each energy level contained three protein levels (15, 25, 35% of 3600 kcal ME/kg) and three rat levels (10, 20, 40% of 3,600 kcal ME/kg) by addition of an appropriate amount of carbohydrate and the following result were obtained. As the protein level was increasing, digestibilities of dry matter and carbohydrate tended to decrease whereas that of protein was slightly increasing. On the other hand, digestibility of fat was always very high regardless of the level of protein but that tended to be slightly improved as the level of energy or rat increased. The digestibilities of female and male rats tended to be same. The digestibilities of dry matter, crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrate were 83%, 90%, 96% and 93%, respectively, and they were neither affected by protein and energy levels nor observed differently depending upon the sex. Nitrogen retention of female and male rats were best for LPHE ration. In other words, both nitrogen retention was improved as the level of energy increased and the level of protein decreased. The gross energy intake was high at low protein level in female rats and at medium protein level in male rats. That tended to decrease as the level of energy increased in female rats whereas that was not affected by the level of energy in male rats. The metabolic energy efficiency was highest for LPHE ration in female rats and for LPME ration in male rats.
