  • The buildings constructed with steel structure are coated with certified fire resistive material to resist from fire. All the building materials lose their initial performances as time passes by, so they need some maintenance. The Sprayed Fire Resistive Material (SFRM) also loses its performance and this performance loss of the SFRM is very important because fire resistance of buildings depends on SFRM. So this study was aimed to synthesis of alkali-silicates for SFRM and to evaluate the effect of alkali-silicates, K-silicates, Na-silicates and Li-silicates, by exchange of mole ratios as basic factors, tested solubility, intumescence ratios, thermal analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, fire-resistant and heat-resistant.

  • Although set accelerating agents are used generally in New Austrian Tunneling Method, the standards for test methods and quality of set accelerating agents are not prescribed domestically. In this study, the proprieties of the various standards and the characteristics of set accelerating agents for shotcrete were evaluated. The alkali contents of set accelerating agents based on silicate, aluminate and cement were higher than those of alkali-free ones. From the result, it is thought that the quality control of aggregate should be enhanced and that the number of test cycle of alkali-aggregate reaction should be increased. The setting times of cement paste with set accelerating agents based on silicate and alkali-free ones were different largely with mixing methods. Compressive strength of mortar with set accelerating agents based on silicate, aluminate and cement at one day satisfied the specifications of Korea Concrete Institute. However, the strength ratio compared to control mix at 28 days showed as $50{\~}65\%$ except for the alkali-free set accelerating agents. As a results of setting time and strength test, the establishment of domestic standards that can reflect the characteristics of materials and construction methods of tunnels and that can increase quality of set accelerating agents is required immediately.

  • This study is interested in manufacturing the self-cleaning silicate concrete surface impregnant including tetra ethyl ortho silicate, lithium silicate for the repair of the exposed concrete surface and the color concrete requiring the advanced function in view of the concrete appearance. The concrete surface layer change and static contact angel was tested for the review of application. The result of this study shows that the effective silicate is tetra ethyl ortho silicate and lithium silicate. The adhesion in tension is satisfied with performance requirement of KS standard but the reinforcement of concrete substrate is slight. So, The self-cleaning silicate concrete impregnant of this study is more desirable for the improvement of durability rather than the reinforcement.

  • This study was performed to investigate the Alkali-Silica Reaction(ASR) of crushed stones using chemical analysis, polarization microscope, XRD, chemical method(KS F 2545, ASTM C 289), mortar-bar method( KS F 2546, ASTM C 227) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM ) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis(EDXA) of reaction products by ASK in the mortar bars and to investigate the influence on alkali content and kind of added alkali to the ASR. Test results show that one kind of domestic crushed stone is estimated as deleterious by ASTM chemical method and mortar bar method, and reaction product is proved as alkali silicate gel by EDXA.

  • Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of fly ash, a by-products from thermal power plant to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of fly ash is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the source of material such as fly ash, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effective in the reduction of $CO_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the compressive strength of mortar on alkaline activator and curing condition in order to develop cementless fly ash based alkali-activated concrete. In view of the results, we found out that it was possible for us to make alkali-activated mortar with 70MPa at the age of 28days by using alkaline activator manufactured as 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate and applying the atmospheric curing after high temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ for 48hours.

  • Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and blast furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of by-products is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. However, most study deal only with alkali-activated blast furnace slag or fly ash, as for the combined use of the both, little information is reported. In this study, we investigated the influence of mixture ratio of fly ash/slag, type of alkaline activator and curing condition on the workability and compressive strength of mortar in oder to develop cementless alkali-activated concrete. In view of the results, we found out that the mixture ratio of fly ash/slag and the type of alkaline activator always results to be significant factors. But the influence of curing temperature in the strength development of mortar is lower than the contribution due to other factors. At the age of 28days, the mixture 50% fly ash and 50% slag activated with 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate, develop compressive strength of about 65 MPa under $20^{\circ}C$ curing.
