  • High-resolution satellites such as Kompsat-3 and CAS-500 include optical cameras of MS (Multispectral) and PAN (Panchromatic) CCD (Charge Coupled Device) sensors installed with certain offsets. The offsets between the CCD sensors produce geometric discrepancy between MS and PAN images because a ground target is imaged at slightly different times for MS and PAN sensors. For precise pan-sharpening process, we propose a co-registration process consisting the physical sensor modeling and image matching. The physical sensor model enables the initial co-registration and the image matching is carried out for further refinement. An experiment with Kompsat-3 images produced RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) 0.2pixels level of geometric discrepancy between MS and PAN images.

  • As the international trade increases, vessel traffics around the Korean Peninsula are also increasing. Maritime accidents hence take place more frequently in the southern coast of Korea where many big and small ports are located. Accidents involving ship collision and sinking result in a substantial human and material damage as well as the marine environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary to locate the ships quickly when such accidents occur. In this study, we suggest a new ship detection index by comparing and analyzing the reflectivity of each channel of the Korea MultiPurpose SATellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) images of the area around the Gwangyang Bay. A threshold value of 0.1 is set based on a histogram analysis, and all vessels are detected when compared with RGB composite images. After selecting a relatively large ship as a representative sample, the distribution of spatial reflectivity around the ship is studied. Uniform shadows are detected on the northwest side of the vessel. This indicates that the sun is in the southeast, the azimuth of the actual satellite image is $144.80^{\circ}$, and the azimuth angle of the sun can be estimated using the shadow position. The reflectivity of the shadows is 0.005 lower than the surrounding sea and ship. The shadow height varies with the position of the bow and the stern, perhaps due to the relative heights of the ship deck and the structure. The results of this study can help search technology for missing vessels using optical satellite images in the event of a marine accident around the Korean Peninsula.

  • Recently, real time data acquisition become important for space weather forecast and research. In this work, we have developed the data acquisition tools and their applications for space weather monitoring. We have developed programs to download the space weather data using IDL as well as programs to interactively display the image and data using ION (IDL on the Net). By using these tools, we have constructed the mirror site of Active Region Monitor (ARM) which summarizes several different solar activities, and developed ION programs to display TEC(Total Electron Contents) maps from GPS data at the passage of Korean satellites. At present, the KAO ARM mirror site (http://sun.kao.re.kr/arm) is successfully updated in every thirty minutes. The TEC maps from GPS data are expected to be used for monitoring the space environment of Korean satellites.

  • Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the Korean Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. The instrument images the ocean surface using a whisk-broom motion with a swath width of 800 km and a ground sample distance (GSD) of less than 1 km over the entire field-of-view (FOV). The instrument is designed to have an on-orbit operation duty cycle of 20% over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset and on-orbit image data storage. The instrument also performs sun calibration and dark calibration for on-orbit instalment calibration. The OSMI instrument is a multi-spectral imager covering the spectral range from 400 nm to 900 nm using a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) Focal Plane Array (FPA). The ocean colors are monitored using 6 spectral channels that can be selected via ground commands after launch. The instrument performances are fully measured for 8 basic spectral bands centered at 412, 443, 490, 510, 555, 670, 765 and 865 nm during ground characterization of instalment. In addition to the ground calibration, the on-orbit calibration will also be used for the on-orbit band selection. The on-orbit band selection capability can provide great flexibility in ocean color monitoring.

  • In this paper, DLKF (Deep Learning Keypoint Filtering), the deep learning-based keypoint filtering method for the rapidization of the image registration method for remote sensing images is proposed. The complexity of the conventional feature-based image registration method arises during the feature matching step. To reduce this complexity, this paper proposes to filter only the keypoints detected in the artificial structure among the keypoints detected in the keypoint detector by ensuring that the feature matching is matched with the keypoints detected in the artificial structure of the image. For reducing the number of keypoints points as preserving essential keypoints, we preserve keypoints adjacent to the boundaries of the artificial structure, and use reduced images, and crop image patches overlapping to eliminate noise from the patch boundary as a result of the image segmentation method. the proposed method improves the speed and accuracy of registration. To verify the performance of DLKF, the speed and accuracy of the conventional keypoints extraction method were compared using the remote sensing image of KOMPSAT-3 satellite. Based on the SIFT-based registration method, which is commonly used in households, the SURF-based registration method, which improved the speed of the SIFT method, improved the speed by 2.6 times while reducing the number of keypoints by about 18%, but the accuracy decreased from 3.42 to 5.43. Became. However, when the proposed method, DLKF, was used, the number of keypoints was reduced by about 82%, improving the speed by about 20.5 times, while reducing the accuracy to 4.51.

  • A new naked oat cultivar, 'Jungmo2005'(Avena nuda L.), was developed for food and forage use by National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2010. It was derived from a cross between $F_1$['Early80'/'Gwiri33'] and $F_1$['Early80'/'Gwiri23']. 'Early80', a covered oats, has early heading and high yielding, while 'Gwiri23' of covered type and 'Gwiri33' of naked type has early heading with large-size grain. 'Jungmo2005' has the characteristics of narrow and long leaves of pale green color, middle diameter culm of yellow color and medium grain of whitish yellow color. Cultivar 'Jungmo2005' had 2 days earlier heading date (May 9) than the check cultivar 'Seonyang' (May 11) in field condition. The 'Jungmo2005' showed better winter hardiness than that of the check cultivar, and similar to the check cultivar in respect to lodging resistance. The 'Jungmo2005' had 105 cm of culm length, 21.5 cm of spike length, 658 spikes per $m^2$, 82 grains per spike, 23.3 g of 1,000-grain weight, and 622 g of test weight. The grain yield of 'Jungmo2005' was averaged $3.38MT\;ha^{-1}$, which was 6% higher than that of the check. Average forage fresh and dry matter yield of 'Jungmo2005' harvested at milk-ripe stage were 44.8 and $12.6tone\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, compared with 47.5 and $12.5tone\;ha^{-1}$ of the check. The protein content of the 'Jungmo2005' was similar to the check (7.6% and 7.5%, respectively), while ADF (28.6%) and NDF (51.5%) were lower than the check (31.4% and 57.0%, respectively). TDN content and RFV were higher than those of the check (66.3%, 120.3 and 64.1, 105.2, respectively). 'Jungmo2005' is recommended for fall sowing cropping only in the south area where daily minimum mean temperatures are averaged higher than $-4^{\circ}C$ in January, and it should not be cultivated in mountain areas, where frost damages is likely to occur. The areas would do better only to sow in spring season.

  • It is prerequisite to generate epipolar resampled images by reducing the y-parallax for accurate and efficient processing of satellite stereo images. Minimizing y-parallax requires the accurate sensor modeling that is carried out with ground control points. However, the approach is not feasible over inaccessible areas where control points cannot be easily acquired. For the case, a relative orientation can be utilized only with conjugate points, but its accuracy for satellite sensor should be studied because the sensor has different geometry compared to well-known frame type cameras. Therefore, we carried out the bias-compensation of RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) without any ground control points to study its precision and effects on the y-parallax in epipolar resampled images. The conjugate points were generated with stereo image matching with outlier removals. RPCs compensation was performed based on the affine and polynomial models. We analyzed the reprojection error of the compensated RPCs and the y-parallax in the resampled images. Experimental result showed one-pixel level of y-parallax for Kompsat-3 stereo data.
