  • Present study shows three different methods finding the eigenfrequencies of an infinite circular cylinder under free-vibration; Elasticity theory that can be applied to general case, thin-shell theory that can be effectively applied to the cylinders with small thickness, and numerical study using Finite Element Method (FEM). The results obtained from those methods were verified through the cross check among the calculations. Changing the thickness of the cylinder for a fixed outer radius, all the eigenfrequencies below 1 kHz were found and their dependences on the modal index and the thickness were observed.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The actuator and sensors for the MFC actuator equations were derived based on pinforce model. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. After calculating the natural vibration characteristics, the positive position feedback controller was designed to cope with the first two modes. To this end, the equations of motion were reduced to modal equations of motion by considering the modes of interest. The theoretical results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.

  • In the present paper, dynamic characteristics and vibration control performance of a cylindrical shell structure are experimentally investigated and results are presented in the air and underwater conditions. End-capped cylindrical shell structure is manufactured and Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) actuators are attached on the inside-surface of the structure. Modal characteristics are studied in the air and under the water conditions and then equation of motion of the structure is derived from the test results. Structural vibration control performances of the proposed structure are evaluated via experiments with optimal control algorithm. Vibration control performances are presented both in the frequency and time domains.

  • Cylindrical shells are often used in the construction of ship and land-based structures such as deck plating with a camber, side shell plating for fore and aft part pipes, as well as storage tanks. It has been believed that such curved shells can be modeled fundamentally as a part of the cylinder under axial compression. From the estimations made based on cylindrical models, it is known that in general, curvature increases the buckling strength of a curved shell when subjected to axial compression, and the same curvature is also expected to increase the overall strength. A series of elastic large deflection analyses were conducted in order to clarify the fundamentals observed in the buckling and post-buckling behaviour of circular cylinders under axial compression. In the present paper, an FE-series analysis has been performed based on the elastic large deflection behaviour, and the effect of parameters has been clarified. The ultimate strength behavior of the circular cylinder was found to be significantly influenced by both the initial deflection and the FE-modeling method.

  • In this study, we theoretically study the acoustic scattering of an obliquely incident plane wave from a finite elastic cylindrical shell. A heuristic scattering method of Ye [Z. Ye, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 877-884 (1997)] for a finite fluid cylinder is extended into a finite elastic cylindrical shell since no analytic solutions exist in the finite cylinder. The elastic cylindrical shell is modeled with the 3D elastic wave theory considering internal fluid. Using the derived analytic solution, we observe the effect of the internal fluid on the scattering field, the scattering field for the Rayleigh parameter, and the far-field scattering function for the elastic property of the cylindrical shell.
