This study describes the results of model experiment to analyze the effect of backfill material types on the behavior of underground facility. In the model experiment, backfill materials around the existing underground facility were applied with soil (Jumunjin standard sand) and CLSM. The displacement of underground facility was analyzed for each excavation stage considering the separation distance between the excavation surface and the backfill area based on the experimental results. When soil was applied as a backfill material, the soil on the back of the excavation surface collapsed by excavation and formed an angle of repose, and the process of slope stability was repeated at each excavation stage. In addition, the displacement of underground facility began to occur in the excavation stage that the failure line of soil passes the installation location of the underground facility. When CLSM was applied as a backfill material, there was almost no horizontal and vertical displacement of the ground regardless of the separation distance from the excavation surface even when excavation proceeded to the backfill depth. Therefore, this result showed that it can have a resistance effect against the lateral earth pressure generated and the collapse of the original ground by adjacent excavation, if a backfill material with high stiffness such as CLSM is applied.
Recently, irregular torrential rainfall have frequently occurred due to abnormal climate, and landslide damage is increasing. In Korea, more than 70% of the total land is mountainous areas, appropriate measures are needed to prevent landslides by heavy rainfall. When improved soil is applied to the surface of the slope, it is possible to suppress an increase in groundwater level due to rainfall penetration and secure stability of the slope. In this study, the appropriate depth of improved soil that can confirm the increase in groundwater level and secure stability by applying improved soil to the weathered soil slope was studied. A total of three cases were analyzed for the slope of the cross-section: standard slope for weathered soil (1:1.5, 1:1.8, and 1:2.0). For rainfall conditions, referring to the regional frequency probability rainfall provided by the Water resource Management Information System, the increase in groundwater level by stage was confirmed by assuming a 500-year frequency precipitation maximum duration of 48 hours. As a result of the study, in the case of natural slopes, the slope was completely saturated before 48 hours the rainfall duration, and there was a possibility of collapse. the improvement depth in the slope of 1:1.5 was appropriate for more than 1m from the surface regardless of the rainfall duration, and in the the slope of 1:1.8 was appropriate of 1m for more than 36 hours. in the slope of 1:2.0, it was appropriate for that safety when improved soil of 0.5m for rainfall duration 48 hours or more.

Recently, redevelopment of the original downtown area is underway, the necessity of construction in adjacent location is increasing. However, excavations in dense urban areas are prone to ground problems due to various causes, so it is necessary to use materials and methods that can minimize such problems. As a general earth retaining method, various methods such as diaphragm wall and CIP method are applied using cement. However, since a large amount of cement is used for the installation of earth retaining method, it is necessary to conduct research on the development of new cement substitute materials to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we utilized the hardening reaction of blast furnace slag powder, desulfurized gypsum and high calcium fly ash by alkali activation and applied it to the SCW method. As a result, it was analyzed that the compressive strength of solidified soil using development solidification material was 96.2 ~ 106.3% of OPC at 28 days of curing. In addition, the strength increment ratio was 2.06 for sandy soil and 2.41 for clayey soil, which was higher than 1.85 of OPC. It seems an advantageous in terms of long-term strength. In addition, from the environmental point of view, it was analyzed that there is no elution of heavy metals and that greenhouse gas emissions can be dramatically reduced. Therefore, if further studies are conducted, it can be applied to the SCW method.

This paper describes the comparative results of measured and predicted values for the horizontal displacement of earth retaining wall based on two field cases, in order to evaluate the application of lateral earth pressure to earth retaining wall supported by earth anchor in Jeju. The prediction of lateral earth pressure acting on the earth retaining wall was performed by elasto-plastic analysis using Rankine earth pressure, Hong & Yun lateral earth pressure, Terzaghi & Peck modified lateral earth pressure, and Tschebotarioff lateral earth pressure. As a result, the predicted value of the maximum horizontal displacement for site A was about 10 to 12 times greater than the measured value, and in the case of site B, the predicted value was evaluated as about 9 to 12 times greater than the measured value. That is, both sites showed a similar increase rate in the maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value compared to the measured value. In all field construction cases, the maximum horizontal displacement by measured values occurred in the sedimentary layer, soft rock layer, and clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was shown in a trapezoidal shape. The maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value occurred around the clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was elliptical. In the ground with a clinker layer, the measured value showed a very different horizontal displacement tendency from the predicted value, because the clinker layer exists in the form of a rock layer and continuous layer. In other words, it is unreasonable to apply the existing prediction method, which is overestimated, because the characteristics of the earth pressure distribution in Jeju show a tendency to be quite different from the predicted earth pressure distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a research on the lateral earth pressure in the realistic Jeju that can secure more economic efficiency.

In order to evaluate the relationship between the ground confining pressure and the shear characteristics of the pile-soil interface, this study described the comparative results of the existing experimental results and the FEA results using the strength reduction factor. The strength reduction factor was applied to simulate the shear behavior of the pile-soil interface in finite element analysis(FEA). The analysis results showed that the maximum pullout resistance decreased due to the influence of low confining pressure, as the fines content increased. This trend was similar to the previous experimental research, and this FEA model simulated with the interface strength reduction factor was evaluated as reasonable. The analysis results of the variation in the interface strength reduction factor clearly showed that the interface strength reduction factor clearly increased at a high fines content when the confining pressure was 50kPa. However, it was found that the increase rate was low when the confining pressure was 100kPa and 150kPa. Therefore, confining pressure and fines content need to be considered in FEA to evaluate the shear behavior of the pile-soil interface.

Simple Iteration Method for calculating the natural frequency is presented in this paper. This method is simple but exact method of calculating natural frequencies corresponding to the modes of vibration of beams and tower structures with irregular cross sections and arbitrary boundary conditions. This method consists of determining the deflected mode shape of the member due to the inertia force under resonance condition. Finite difference method is used for this purpose. The influence of the $D_{22}$ stiffness on the natural frequency is rigorously investigated. In this paper, the influence of the loading sizes, different cross section on the natural frequency of vibration of some structural elements is presented. This method extends to two dimensional problems including advanced composite material structures.
Most of waste sludge has generally been disposed in landfill site or dumped in the ocean, which will be banned by the content of its heavy metals according to London Dumping Convention in Korea. Therefore, environmentally friend methods are urgently required for the treatment and disposal of the sewage sludge. Thermal hydrolysis is one of the good treatment methods to solve the sludge problems. In this study, the physical and environmental testing was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of by-product cake from the thermal hydrolysis as liner or cover materials in landfill.
Shallow slope failures in residual soil during periods of prolonged infiltration are common in Korea. This study examines an infinite slope analysis to estimate the influence of infiltration on surficial stability of slopes by the limit equilibrium method. Approximate method which is based on the Green-Ampt model have been considered to evaluate the likelihood of shallow slope failure which is induced by a particular rainfall event that accounts for the rainfall intensity and duration for various return periods. Pradel & Raad method which is devised to predict the depth of wetting front to decomposed granite soil slopes having measured soil-water characteristic curves. To compare the results with those obtained from the Pradel & Raad method, a series of numerical analysis using SEEP/W were carried out. It was found that the stability analysis of unsaturated soils calculated by using the soil-water characteristic curve of decomposed granite soils was found to be a proper analysis for shallow slope failures due to rainfall.
The model test and field test for an infiltration trench were carried out to estimate the infiltration quantity in a granular ground with high permeability like Jeju's ground. The specific infiltration equation was suggested on the basis of the model test result. It shows that the infiltration quantity by the proposed equation is larger than about two times of that by the existed equation. Meanwhile, the infiltration quantity from field test is similar to that from the proposed equation as the result of comparison between infiltration quantity of the filed test and that of the proposed equation and the existed equation. Therefore, it may be right that the proposed equation is applied to estimate the infiltration quantity of the infiltration trench in a granular ground with high permeability.
A pilot test using environmentally friendly drains, was carried out to evaluate their applicability potential in the field. The pilot test site was divided into 5 different areas, with several combinations of vertical and horizontal drains installed for evaluation. Conventional natural fiber drains (FDB), new developed straw drain board (SDB) and plastic drain board (PDB) were used as vertical drains, while sand and fiber mats were used as horizontal drains. Surface settlement rates and excess pore pressure generation/dissipation tendency of PDB and FDB are almost identical except those of SDB. Cone tip resistance obtained from cone penetration test measured at the end of 1st consolidation stage for upper soft layer definitely increased irrespective of types of vertical drains. The monitoring and site investigation test data obtained at the pilot test site prove the vertical natural fiber drains can be used as substitutes of conventional plastic and sand material.
