Seasonality of shellfish collection determined by growth-line analysis of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis (Lamarck) recovered from the Daejuk-ri Shell Middens, Seosan, Korea (서산 대죽리 패총 출토 말백합 Meretrix petechialis (Lamarck) 을 이용한 패류 채집의 계절성 연구)

  • In this study, growth-line analysis was carried out on the hard clam (Meretrix petechialis) recovered from the Neolithic Age Daejuk-ri Shell Middens, Seosan, Korea, with aim to determine the seasonality of shellfish collection and site occupation. Growth increments of 206 specimens of the clam were examined. The marginal index (MI) of the archaeological specimens was calculated and was compared to the monthly marginal index of modern specimens under the assumption that the growth pattern was the same as it is today. MI of the archaeological specimens ranged from 0.13 to 1.29 and was divided into four categories: < 0.63, spring; 0.63-0.76, summer; 0.76-0.89, fall; $$\geq_-$$ 0.89, winter collection. As a result, of 206 specimens, 170 specimens (82.5%) represented spring, 18 (8.7%) summer, 10 (4.9%) fall and 8 (3.9%) winter collection. The results suggest year-round shellfish collection at the sites, with an emphasis on spring. Considering these results it can be inferred that the sites were occupied throughout the year.

Study on Scientific Analysis about Red Pigment And Binder - The Korean Ancient Red Pottery - (한국 고대 붉은 간토기의 적색 안료 및 교착제에 대한 과학적 분석)

  • From the collection of the National Kimhae Museum, qualitative analyses using microscopic observation, SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR-ATR spectroscopy, and GC-MS were conducted on three burnished red potteries-Jeoksaekmaoyeonwa burnished red pottery (Neolithic age red pottery), Dandomaoyeonwan burnished red pottery(Bronze age red pottery) and Jeoksaekmaoyeongajimun burnished red pottery(Bronze age red pottery)-to investigate the components of the red pigments and the binder. After the layers of the primer were separated from the red surface, crystals of red pigment particles and minerals were found on the red surface. Through SEM-EDS, Raman estimates that the red pigment is Among soil pigments with iron oxide(Fe2O3) as the main color development source, Red Ocher(Fe2O3). A band characteristic of the Urushiol polymer was detected in the FTIR-ATRspectra(4000~600cm-1), GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of the benzenemethanol-2-prophenyl, 4-heptylphenol, 1-tetracecanol, heptafluorobutyric texidecane, all of which are the ingredients of the directional structure of the lacquer present in the red layer. Therefore, it seemed that the three burnished red pottery: Jeoksaekmaoyeonwan pottery(Neolithic age burnished red pottery), Dandomaoyeonwan pottery(bronze age burnished red pottery) and the Jeoksaekmaoyeongajimun pottery(bronze age burnished red pottery) made by mixing minerals and Red Ocher(Fe2O3), with lacquer.

Scientific Analysis and Conservation of Waterlogged Woods Excavated from Suyoeng-ri Site, Hwaseong, Korea (화성 수영리 유적 출토 수침목제유물의 과학적 분석 및 보존처리)

  • Five waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated from Suyeong-ri site in Hwaseong, South Korea. The aim of the present study was to identify the species and estimate the date of manufacture and the manufacturing method of these artefacts. The study also aimed to conserve the original shapes of waterlogged wood artefacts by using the vacuum freeze drying method. The two large waterlogged woods were identified as Ulmus spp. and Morus spp., whereas one of the three small waterlogged woods was identified as Abies spp. and the other two as hard pine. Radiocarbon dating using wiggle match dated the manufacturing of these wooden artefacts between BCE 8520-8490 or BCE 8470-8290 in the Neolithic age, and a similar period was also confirmed for seed excavated from a place close to the location where the waterlogged wood artefacts were excavated. The surface of waterlogged wood artefacts had several traces of manufacturing processes - traces of tearing and chopping - were observed. Based on these observations, it was confirmed that stone adz was used to make these wooden artefacts. Thereafter, the waterlogged wood samples were conserved by immersing them into PEG#4,000 of concentration in water from 10% to 40% at room temperature(15~25℃) and subjecting them to vacuum freeze drying. However, the internal moisture was not completely removed in some thick parts of waterlogged woods by applying the general schedule such as raising the shelf temperature as the surface temperature rises. Therefore, additional study is required using the schedule-method for vacuum freeze drying of large waterlogged wood.

Lacquer as Adhesive : Its Historical Value and Modern Utilization (접착제로서의 옻; 역사성과 현대적 활용)

  • Lacquer is one of the most widely used natural resin in East Asia since Neolithic Age. As a major ingredient of lacquerware, lacquer is waterproof, insect-proof and rot-proof to be durable and anti-abrasion, generally utilized for mainly painting purpose. According to lacquerware excavated from several sites of Japan and China, lacquerware seems to appear in Neolithic Age. On the other hand in case of excavation research in Korea, lacquerwares are found after the Bronze Age. The initial purpose of lacquer is estimated to be adhesive, regarding the literatures mentioning bitumen(Yeoksceong ), animal glue(Kyeo) and egg alumen(Nanbaek). Especially piece of jar coffin unearthed in Pyeongtaek Daechu-ri site had trace of restoration by lacquer and hemp as an evidence of lacquer for adhesion in Pre-Three Kingdoms period. Since then a trend to restore the broken ceramics with lacquer and decorate with golden foil lasted especially in Joseon Dynasty. In the field of gold plated lacquer method, mother-of-pearl inlaying technique for lacquerware and restoration of buildings, lacquer is still used as adhesive. Due to matter of reversibility lacquer is being avoided for conservation and restoration of cultural heritage. Lacquer as a traditional material for adhesive since ancient times, however, has advantage in adhesion strength and durability. Because synthetic resin adhesive has problem of emission of volatile organic compounds and aging over time, lacquer receives attention recently. On the contrary, by combination adhesive from mixing lacquer and animal glue, already proved the possibility of applicability and chemical modification. A research to utilize lacquer as modern paint or functional material is also conducted continuously also in China and Japan. To put traditional material into practical use and modernize, chemical research from the molecular level of the lacquer is necessary in the near future.

The Geomorphic Development and its Paleoenvionment of the Middle Part of the Coastal Plain Gangweondo, Korea. (강원도 중부(주문진-양양) 해안평야의 형성과정과 고환경)

  • 강원도 주문진에서 양양에 이르는 해안평야의 지형형성과 고환경을 신석기유적의 기초조사 연구의 하나로서 연구하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 제4기 최종빙기의 최성 기에 해당되는 15,000y.B.P. 경에는 연구지역은 해수면의 하강에 따른 연장하천의 개석곡으 로서 아한대의 침엽수림의 육상영역하에 있었다. 2. 15,000y.B.P.경 이후 해수면은 기온의 호 전으로 7,500y.B.P에 이르기까지 서서히 상승하였고 이에 따라 개석곡은 연장하천의 후퇴로 육성에서 얕은 하성으로 바뀌었다. 3 해수면 상승은 7,500y.B.P. 이후 빨라지면서 해진 (transgression)으로 되었고 그결과 개석곡은 4,000y.B.P.경에 이르러 하성에서 내만 또는 익 곡의 기수성으로바뀌게 되었다, 이 기간은 후빙기의 이른바 고온기(hypsithermal period)로 서 낙엽활엽수 시대였고 내만 또는 익곡의 가장자리에서는 수생식물이 생육하는 습지환경으 로 변모되었다. 4. 개석곡을 내만 또는 익곡으로 변모시킨 해진은 1,500yB.P.경까지 이어지 면서 지금의 고도에서 안정되었다. 그 결과 내만 또는 익곡의 만입부에서 사주가형성되면서 내만 또는 익곡은 곳에 따라 담수 또는 기수역의 석호로 변하였고 기후는 이전의 고온시대 와는 달리기온은 조금식 하강하는 한랭기후로 서서히 변모시켰다. 5. 석호는 1,000y.B.P. 경 에 이르는 동안 배후로부터 운반된 하천의 토사와 전면의 풍성사 그리고 무성하게 생육하는 수생식물에 의해 서서히 고석호로 등장되기 시작되었다. 6. 1,000y.B.P. 이후 현재에 이르는 동안 하천의 토사와 풍성사의 퇴적증가로 육화가 가속되면서 본래의 개석곡은 매적곡으로 등장되었고 그 결과 지금의 해안평야가 형성되었다.

Seasonality of shellfish gathering using oxygen isotope analysis of Crassostrea gigas from the Neolithic Yeondae-do shell midden site, Tongyeong, Korea (산소동위원소 분석을 이용한 신석기시대 연대도 패총의 굴 (Crassostrea gigas) 채집 계절성 연구)

  • Oxygen isotope ratios (${\delta}^{18}O$) of three Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) specimens from the Neolithic Yeondae-do shell midden site, Tongyeong, Korea, were analyzed to determine the seasonality of shellfish gathering and site occupation. Oxygen isotope samples were taken from the left valve hinge sections of the specimens. Oxygen isotope values ranged between -0.1 ‰ and -2.4 ‰, between -0.2 ‰ and -2.9 ‰, and between 0.3 ‰ and -2.8 ‰ in oyster specimen #one, #two and #three, respectively. The isotope profiles showed seasonal temperature cycles, providing information related to the seasonality of shellfish gathering and site occupation. Hinge-edge oxygen isotope values of the specimens showed decreasing trends after passing through maximum values (winter), indicating that they formed during spring. Thus it can be assumed that during spring season, oysters were gathered and the site was occupied.

Analysis of organic Residues from Open-Air Hearths at Nambuk-dong, Yongyu-do (용유도 남북동유적 야외노지에 대한 잔존지방분석)

  • The archaeological site of Nambuk-dong, Yongyu Island, Incheon which goes back to the Neolithic making it difficult to identify character of site, To get information for identifying utility and character of Open-Air Hearths within the finds, an organic residues analysis was conducted on soil and stone sample, sterol was analysis to determine the originality of archaeological sample, then percentage of fatty acid was identify the species of sample. As a result, it is assumed that No. 9, 10, 12 finds once had shellfish-related materials remain, No. 32 find seemed to have animal materials, No. 42, 43 finds were related to plant. In conclusion, it seems that open-air hearths of Yongyu Island had utility mainly related to making seafood.

Classification of Obsidian Artifacts found in the Korean Peninsula by Chemical Compositions and Magnetic Properties (성분분석 및 자기적 특성에 의한 한반도 흑요석의 분류 연구)

  • Provenance discrimination of sixty four obsidian artifacts found in the Korean Peninsular has been carried out using major elements, minor elements and magnetic properties. Most of obsidians in this study were classified into the subalkaline series based on the contents of $Al_2O_3,\;CaO,\;and\;Na_2O+K_2O$ in samples. Provenance & obsidians were classified into three major groups using major elements and minor elements analyse. This result suggests that there are no correlations among the three groups whose provenances are different. Although the magnetic properties of obsidians do not yield clear groupings according to the archaeological site, the bivariate plot for the magnetic susceptibility and the saturation isothermal remanent magnetization shows a rough correlation with the results of major and minor elements analyses.
