  • Recently, the necessity of efficient and exact method to analyze structures is increasing with the importance of the seismic analysis. But the finite element method used in many field do not give the exact solution unless the length of the element is very short enough to represent the deformation of the element. Because the amount of computer calculation increase with the increasing of the number of degree of freedoms, the finite element method for the exact dynamic analysis of structures would not be efficient. To solve these problems, spectral clement method combined spectral method using the principle of wave mechanics and finite element method for the analysis of discrete models is applied to evaluate the behavior of the spatial structures. As a result of analysis. it becomes clear that the spectral element method is faster and more exact than the finite clement method.

  • Spectral element method (SEM) is introduced for the fully coupled structural dynamic problems, In this paper, the beam with passive constrained layered damping (PCLD) treatments is considered as a representative problems. The beam consists of a viscoelastic layer that is sandwiched between the base beam structure and an elastic layer, The fully coupled equations of motion for a PCLD beam are derived, The equations of motion are derived first by using Hamilton's principle, From this equations of motion, the spectral element is formulated for the vibration analysis by use of the SEM, As an illustrative example, a cantilevered beam is considered. It is shown that, as the thickness of VEM layer vanishes, the results become a simple layer beam's that.

  • In this paper, the high-order spectral/boundary-element method is developed to calculate the 3-dimensional water waves generated by a submerged body. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated Tn time-domain. Three-dimensional free-surface flows generated by a submerged sphere which is moving under the free-surface are calculated. Through example calculations, nonlinear effects on free-surface profiles and hydrodynamic forces are shown. Comparisons with others' results show good agreements.

  • The use of frequency-dependent dynamic stiffness matrix (or spectral element matrix) in structural dynamics may provide very accurate solutions, while it reduces the number of degrees-of-freedom to improve the computational efficiency and cost problems. Thus, this paper develops a spectral element model for the thin plates moving with constant speed under uniform in-plane tension. The concept of Kantorovich method is used in the frequency-domain to formulate the dynamic stiffness matrix. The present spectral element model is evaluated by comparing its solutions with the exact analytical solutions. The effects of moving speed and in-plane tension on the flexural wave dispersion characteristics and natural frequencies of the plate are numerically investigated.

  • Structural boundary condition is very important as a part of a structural system because it determines the dynamic characteristics of the structure. It is often to experience that experimental measurements of structural dynamic characteristics are somewhat different from the analytical predictions in which idealized boundary conditions are usually assumed. However, real structural boundary conditions are not so ideal; not perfectly clamped, for instance. Thus this paper introduces a new method to determine the non-ideal structural boundary conditions in the frequency domain. In this method, structural boundary conditions are modeled by both extensional (vertical) and torsional elastic springs. The effective springs are then determined from experimental FRFs (frequency response functions) by using the spectral element method (SEM). For a cantilevered beam experiments are conducted to determine the real boundary conditions in terms of effective springs. Dynamic characteristics (analytically predicted) based on identified boundary conditions are found to be much closer to experimental measurements when compared with those based on ideal boundary conditions.

  • In this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the uniform straight pipelines conveying internal unsteady fluid. The spectral element matrix is formulated by using the exact frequency-domain solutions of the pipe-dynamics equations. The spectral element dynamic analyses are then conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the present spectral element model and to investigate the vibration characteristics and internal fluid transients of an example pipeline system.

  • For accurate prediction of the thermal shock-induced vibrations, this paper develops a spectral element model for usually moving thermoelastic beam-plates. The spectral element model is formulated from the frequency-dependent dynamic shape functions which satisfy the governing equations in the frequency-domain. Some numerical studies are conducted to evaluate the present spectral element model and also to investigate the vibration characteristics of an example axially moving beam-plate subjected to thermal loadings.

  • Spectral element method(SEM) has been recognized to provide accurate structural dynamic responses even at high frequency. The Duhamel's integral based SEM developed by the authors for the structures under dynamic distributed loads does not take into account the zero frequency effect and requires significant computational time due to the integration procedure of Duhamel's integral. Hence, in this paper, a new SEM algorithm is proposed. This new algorithm is based on the FEM-type procedure for the distributed loads and includes the zero frequency correction to improve the accuracy. Some numerical results are illustrated to prove the accuracy of present new SEM algorithm.

  • This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of a beam axially moving over multiple elastic supports. The spectral element matrix is derived first for the axially moving beam element and then it is used to formulate the spectral element matrix for the moving beam element with an interim elastic support. The moving speed dependance of the eigenvalues is numerically investigated by varying the applied axial tension and the stiffness of the elastic supports. Numerical results show that the fundamental eigenvalue vanishes first at the critical moving speed to generate the static instability.

  • A spectral element method(SEM) is introduced for the vibration analysis of a rectangular plate subject to dynamic concentrated loads. First, the spectral plate element is derived from the relations between the forces and displacements along the two opposite edges of plate element. The global spectral matrix equation is then formulated by assembling two spectral plate elements so that the dynamic concentrated load is located at the connection nodal line between two plate elements. the concentrated load is then spatially Fourier transformed in the direction of the connection nodal line to transform the two-dimensional plate problem into a simplified equivalent one-dimensional beam-like problem. We may benefit from these procedures in that the spectral results from the present SEM is compared with the exact analytical solutions to prove the remarkable accuracy of the present SEM, while this is not true for conventional finite element solutions, especially at high frequency.
