  • A research field develops by experiencing several turns of paradigms. Mathematics education research have experienced those turns as well. Still, the dominant perspective is that mathematics education research should be scientific and objective. In this article, I suggest that this need not to be the prime rule to follow and that the mathematics education field will fertile by discussing extraordinary cases which may seem controversal to be recognized as valid research work. To this end, I first briefly describe the necessity of open discussions among researchers for a field to develop. Then, I introduce fiction writing, a resesarch method derived from arts-based research, as an extraordinary case for open discussions. The benefit of Arts-based research is on that it takes an holistic approach to how we know by embracing emotion and emphathy as means for knowing. Because of this trait, arts-based research holds a powerful potential for influencing a wide range of people, both inside and outside of the resesarch field. Following this, I present a fiction about a prospective teacher who participated in an activity for designing educative curriculum materials. By doing so, I sought to provoke discussions among mathematics education researchers about what to include as a valid research work, possible standards for reviewing arts-based resesarch.

  • To learn statistics meaningfully, we must provide an opportunity to experience the process of solving statistical problems with actual data. In particular, exploration questions at the problem setting stage are important for students to successfully guide them from the beginning to the conclusion of the statistical problem solving process. Therefore, in this study, a mixed research method was carried out for the exploration questions of pre-service mathematics teachers during the problem setting stage. As a result, some pre-service mathematics teachers categorized incorrect statistical questions because they did not clearly define the meaning or variables of the questions in the process of categorizing them from possible questions. In addition, questions that cannot be solved statistically were categorized due to misconceptions about statistical knowledge. Second, only 50% of the pre-service mathematics teachers met all 6 conditions suitable for solving statistical problems, while there maining they met only a few conditions. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is as follows. First of all, they should be given the opportunity to experience all the statistical problem solving processes through teacher education because they do not have enough experience in statistical problem solving. Secondly, since the problem setting stage is very important in the statistical problem solving process, a series of subdivided processes are also required in the problem setting stage.

  • This study analyzed Secondary Mathematically Gifted' mathematical thinking processes demonstrated from the activities. They configured regular triangle tessellations in the Non-Euclidean hyperbolic disk model. The students constructed the figure and transformation to construct the tessellation in the poincare disk. gsp file which is the dynamic geometric environmen, The students were to explore the characteristics of the hyperbolic segments, construct an equilateral triangle and inversion. In this process, a variety of strategic thinking process appeared and they recognized to the Non-Euclidean geometric system.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze of gifted students' improvement on mathematical attitude and problem-solving ability through project-based materials in science high school. For this study, research questions are established as follows. 1. Does the project-based materials-used instruction have a positive effect on improving problem-solving ability? 2. Does the project-based materials-used instruction have a positive effect on improving mathematical attitude? To solve these research questions, this study employed a survey and interview type investigation for gifted students' mathematical attitude and problem-solving ability. A subject of classes were randomly selected among the 11th grader in D science high school and designated one class as the experimental group and the other class as the control group. Twelve hours of the project-based materials-used instruction and the traditional textbook-oriented instruction had been carried out in each class. Findings on this study are as follows: First, the project-based material-used instruction is shown to be more effective in enhancing problem-solving ability than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction. Second, the project-based material-used instruction is shown to be more effective in improving mathematical attitude than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction.

  • This study searched for the possibility of tangram activities through modifying the tasks of elementary school mathematics textbooks into content based open tasks. As a result of analyzing previous researches, it was confirmed the educational effect of the mathematical tasks transformation and the educational value of tangram activities. The analysis of the textbooks revealed that the tangram activities presented in the textbooks are likely to be at the level of play. It was tried to modify 2015 revised curriculum textbook-tasks into content based open tasks. Based on this study, it could be expected advantages of task modification such as improvement of teachers' expertise and expectation of diverse reactions of students.

  • This study is a case study of STEAM education. We have developed teaching and learning materials, suggested teaching method, and analysed the result for exploring the potential and effect of STEAM. The content of this study is based on the history of mathematics. Science (S) is related to the 24 divisions of the year, the height of the sun, the movement of heavenly bodies. Technology (T) is related to the exploration with graphic calculators. Engineering (E) is related to design sundial and research on the design principles. Art (A) is related to literature review about mathematical history, the understanding of the value of the mathematics. Mathematics (M) is related to the trigonometric functions. We have considered that Project-Based Learning is proper teaching and learning for STEAM education, we have designed the STEAM PBL and analysed the results focused on the developing integrative knowledge, mathematical attitude including mathematical value, the competencies of 21 century. The result of this study is as follows. We find that STEAM education activates students' collaboration, communication skills and improves representation and critical thinking skills. Also STEAM education makes positive changes of students' mathematical attitudes including the values of the mathematics.

  • The goal of this study was to apply an expectancy-value model(Wigfield & Eccles, 2000) to explain changes in six multi-ethnic students' achievement motivation in mathematics during sixth (2012) to eighth (2014) grades. In order to achieve this goal, we used narrative research methods. Although individual students' achievement motivation and mathematics related life experiences differed, there are some common factors influencing their motivation development, especially (a) roles played by parents and teachers; (b) assessment of peers' competencies; (c) past learning experiences related to mathematics curriculum; (d) perception of the relationship between mathematics competency and other subjects; (e) home backgrounds; and (f) perceived task values. In this study, we achieved some insight into why some multi-ethnic students are willing to study hard to get good scores while others are uninterested in mathematics, and why some multi-ethnic students are likely to pursue new mathematical tasks and persist despite challenges, while others easily give up studying mathematics in the face of adversity. We argue that in order to increase and sustain multi-ethnic students' achievement motivation, educators and parents should recognize that motivation is contextually formulated in the intersection of current people, time, and space, not a personal entity formed in an individual's mind. The findings of this study shed light on the development of achievement motivation and can inform efforts to develop multi-ethnic students' positive motivation, which might influence their mathematics achievement and success in school.
