The purpose of this study is to compare the process of mathematical modeling in mathematical modeling class according to group organization, and to investigate whether it shows improvement in mathematical reasoning ability. A total of 24 classes with 3 mathematical modeling activities were designed to investigate the research problem. The result of this study showed that the heterogeneous groups performed better than the homogeneous groups in terms of both the performance ability of mathematical modeling and mathematical reasoning ability. This study implies that, with respect to group design for applying mathematical modeling in teaching mathematics, heterogeneous group design would be more efficient than homogeneous group design.
The purpose of this study is to explore ways for students to connect conceptual and procedural knowledge in mathematical modeling lessons. Accordingly, we selected the greatest common divisor among the learning contents in which elementary school students have difficulties connecting conceptual and procedural knowledge. A mathematical modeling lesson was designed and implemented to solve problems related to the greatest common divisor while connecting conceptual and procedural knowledge. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the mathematical modeling lesson had positive effects on students solving problems by connecting conceptual and procedural knowledge. In addition, through actual class application, a teaching and learning plan was derived to meaningfully connect conceptual and procedural knowledge in mathematical modeling lessons.
Mathematical modelling is a useful method for reinterpreting the real world and for solving real problems. In this paper, we introduced a theory on mathematical modelling. Further, we developed a mathematical model of the H1N1 influenza with Excel. Then, we analyzed the model which tells us what role it can play in an appropriate prediction of the future and in the decision of accompanied policies.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the progress of children's abstraction and to investigate how elementary students understand through mathematical modeling approach in the sixth grader's learning of surface area. Each small group showed their own level on abstraction in mathematical modeling progress. The participants showed improvements in understanding regarding to surface area context.
In this study, we develop the mathematical modeling teaching materials focused function units of mathematics textbooks and establish the appropriate teaching and learning model. Using mathematical modeling materials and developed instructional materials for teaching high school students is aimed to improve the academic achievement, mathematical attitude and fear. The problem of this study is as follows : First, between the groups using mathematical modeling and a traditional textbook teaching academic achievement groups showed that there is a difference? Second, between the groups using mathematical modeling and a traditional textbook teaching mathematics between groups showed that there is a difference of mathematical attitude and fear? Third, what are the lessons for the students' responses using mathematical modeling?
The Purpose of this study is to explore he mathematical discovery and justification of six 10th grade students through mathematical modeling activities in spreadsheet environments. The students investigated problem situations with a spreadsheet, which seem to be difficult to solve in paper and pencil environment. In spreadsheet environments, it is easy for students to form a data table and graph by inputting and copying spreadsheet formulas, and to make change specific variable by making a scroll bar. In this study those functions of spreadsheet play an important role in discovery and justification of mathematical rules which underlie in the problem situations. In modeling activities, the students could solve the problem situations and find the mathematical rules by using those functions of spreadsheets. They used two types of trial and error strategies to find the rules. The first type was to insert rows between two adjacent rows and the second was to make scroll bars connecting specific variable and change the variable by moving he scroll bars. The spreadsheet environments also help students to justify their findings deductively and convince them that their findings are true by checking various cases of the Problem situations.
Mathematical modeling has been observed in the way of a possibility to contribute in improving students' problem solving abilities. One of the important views of real life problem context could be described such as a useful ways to interpret the real life leading to children's abstraction process. The problem contexts for the grade 6 with mathematical modeling perspectives were developed by reviewing the current 7th National Mathematics Curriculum of Korea. Those include the 5 content areas such as number & operation, geometry, measurement, probability & statistics, and pattern & problem solving. One of problem contexts, "Space", specially designed for pattern & problem solving area, was applied to the grade 6 students and analyzed in detail to understand student's mathematical modeling progress.
This study aims to examine the impact of RUBRIC writing on students' mathematical modeling. By analyzing 23 tenth grade students' responses to seven problems related to mathematical modeling, we found that the students who used RUBRIC writing could not only get more correct answers but also could use more various representations and mathematical models than the students who did not use it. The students with RUBRIC writing also could translate between reality and mathematics more appropriately, and better explain the process to solve the problem than the counterpart. It implies that RUBRIC writing can help improve students' mathematical modeling and problem solving as an alternative instruction and assessment.
As the era of solving various and complex problems in the real world using artificial intelligence and big data appears, problem-solving competencies that can solve realistic problems through a mathematical approach are required. In fact, the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum and the 2022 revised mathematics curriculum emphasize mathematical modeling as an activity and competency to solve real-world problems. However, the real-world problems presented in domestic and international textbooks have a high proportion of artificial problems that rarely occur in real-world. Accordingly, domestic and international countries are paying attention to the reality of mathematical modeling tasks and suggesting the need for authentic tasks that reflect students' daily lives. However, not only did previous studies focus on theoretical proposals for reality, but studies analyzing teachers' perceptions of reality and their competency to reflect reality in the task are insufficient. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze in-service mathematics teachers' perception of reality among the characteristics of tasks for mathematical modeling and the in-service mathematics teachers' competency for designing the mathematical modeling tasks. First of all, five criteria for satisfying the reality were established by analyzing literatures. Afterward, teacher training was conducted under the theme of mathematical modeling. Pre- and post-surveys for 41 in-service mathematics teachers who participated in the teacher training was conducted to confirm changes in perception of reality. The pre- and post- surveys provided a task that did not reflect reality, and in-service mathematics teachers determined whether the task given in surveys reflected reality and selected one reason for the judgment among five criteria for reality. Afterwards, frequency analysis was conducted by coding the results of the survey answered by in-service mathematics teachers in the pre- and post- survey, and frequencies were compared to confirm in-service mathematics teachers' perception changes on reality. In addition, the mathematical modeling tasks designed by in-service teachers were evaluated with the criteria for reality to confirm the teachers' competency for designing mathematical modeling tasks reflecting the reality. As a result, it was shown that in-service mathematics teachers changed from insufficient perception that only considers fragmentary criterion for reality to perceptions that consider all the five criteria of reality. In particular, as a result of analyzing the basis for judgment among in-service mathematics teachers whose judgment on reality was reversed in the pre- and post-survey, changes in the perception of in-service mathematics teachers was confirmed, who did not consider certain criteria as a criterion for reality in the pre-survey, but considered them as a criterion for reality in the post-survey. In addition, as a result of evaluating the tasks designed by in-service mathematics teachers for mathematical modeling, in-service mathematics teachers showed the competency to reflect reality in their tasks. However, among the five criteria for reality, the criterion for "situations that can occur in students' daily lives," "need to solve the task," and "require conclusions in a real-world situation" were relatively less reflected. In addition, it was found that the proportion of teachers with low task development competencies was higher in the teacher group who could not make the right judgment than in the teacher group who could make the right judgment on the reality of the task. Based on the results of these studies, this study provides implications for teacher education to enable mathematics teachers to apply mathematical modeling lesson in their classes.
This study aims to identify prospective elementary school teachers' perception of mathematical modeling in elementary class. Forty elementary school teachers participated in this study. Each teacher analysed the previous case studies about mathematical modeling in elementary class, developed a hypothetical learning trajectory, applied the hypothetical learning trajectory to his/her class, reflected students' learning and his/her teaching, and made reflective journals. These journals contained teachers' perception of mathematical modeling and the difficulties that teachers experienced in teaching mathematics as mathematical modeling. These journals were analyzed to identify teachers' perception of mathematical modeling in elementary class. This study shows that teachers have common features of mathematical modeling but their perspectives are little bit different, are classified into four kinds. And the difficulties that teachers experienced in teaching mathematics as mathematical modeling are classified into 5 categories; Task, Students' cognitive demand, Teacher' monitering, All students' participation, and Classroom culture. At last, suggestions for mathematical modeling in elementary class are done according to the result of this study.
