  • In the learning of mathematics, students experience the semiotic activities of representing and interpreting mathematical signs. We called these activities as the representing and interpreting of mathematical signs. On the foundation of Peirce's three elements of the sign, we analysed that students constructed the representamen to interpret the concept of correlation as for the object, "as one is taller, one's size of foot is larger" 4 middle school students who participated the gifted center in Seoul, arranged the statistical data, constructed their own representamen, and then learned the conventional signs as a result of the whole class discussion. In the process, students performed the detailed representing and interpreting of signs, depended on the templates of the known signs, and interpreted the process voluntarily. As the semiotic activities were taken place in this way, it was needed that mathematics teacher guided the representing and interpreting of mathematical signs so that the representation and the meaning of the sign were constructed each other, and that students endeavored to get the negotiation of the interpretants and the representamens, and to reach the conventional representing.

  • Mathematical symbolizing is an important part of mathematics learning. But many students have difficulties m symbolizing mathematical ideas formally. If students had experiences inventing their own mathematical symbols and developing them to conventional ones natural way, i.e. learning mathematical symbols via expressive approaches, they could understand and use formal mathematical symbols meaningfully. These experiences are especially valuable for students who meet mathematical symbols for the first time. Hence, there are needs to investigate how early elementary school students can and should experience meaningful mathematical symbolizing. The purpose of this study was to analyze students' mathematical symbolizing processes and characteristics of theses. We carried out teaching experiments that promoted meaningful mathematical symbolizing among eight first graders. And then we analyzed students' symbolizing processes and characteristics of expressive approaches to mathematical symbols in early elementary students. As a result, we could places mathematical symbolizing processes developed in the teaching experiments under five categories. And we extracted and discussed several characteristics of early elementary students' meaningful mathematical symbolizing processes.

  • The purpose of this study is to capture and explain the roles that signs and attention play in the fraction learning process, through a previous study that employs Deleuze's perspective on sign and the role of attention. From this case study of elementary school students, we found that signs are a prerequisite for learning and that learning takes place as different forms of attention shifts. The various types of semiotic resources used by teachers and students have been found to play an important role in coordinating collective attention between teachers and students.

  • Recently in algebra curriculum, to recognizes and explains general nile expressing patterns is presented as the one alternative and is emphasized. In the seventh School Mathematic Curriculum regarding 'regularity and function' area, in elementary school curriculum, is guiding pattern activity of various form. But difficulty and problem of students are pointing in study for learning through pattern activity. In this article, emphasizes generalization process through research activity of pictorial/geometric pattern that is introduced much on elementary school mathematic curriculum and investigates various approach and strategy of student's thinking, state of symbolization in generalization process of pictorial/geometric pattern. And discusses generalization of pictorial/geometric pattern, difficulty of symbolization and suggested several proposals for research activity of pictorial/geometric pattern.

  • Mathematical thinking can be symbolized by the external signs, and these signs determine in reverse the form of mathematical thinking. Each symbol - a symbol in algebra, a symbol in analysis, and a diagram which verifies syllogism - reflects the diverse characteristic of cogitation in mathematics and perfirms a heuristic function.

  • Students' intuition in formal proof should be expressed as symbols according to the deductive process. The symbol will play a role of the mediation between the intuition and the formal proof. This study examined the evolution process of intuition mediated by the symbol in geometry proof. According to the results first, symbol took the great roles when students had the non-formed intuition for the proposition. The signification of symbols could explain even the proof process of the proposition with the non-expectable intuition. And when students proved it by symbols, not by figure nor words, they could evolute the conclusive intuition about the proposition.

  • Though the term "mathematical modeling" has no single definition or perspective, it is pursued commonly by groups from various perspectives who emphasize the activities of understanding and representing real phenomenon mathematically, building models to solve problems, and reinterpreting real phenomenon to make an attempt to understand the real world and related mathematical models more deeply. The purpose of this study is to identify how mathematization arises and find difficulties of mathematization in mathematical modeling process that share common features with the mathematical modeling activities as presented here. As a result of this research, we confirmed that the students mathematized real phenomena by building various representations, and interpreting them with regard to relationships and contexts inherent real phenomena. The students' communication fostered interplay between iconic representations and indexical representations. We also identified difficulties of mathematization in mathematical modeling process.

  • Negative numbers have been one of the most difficult mathematical concepts, and it was only 200 years ago that they were recognized as a real object of mathematics by mathematicians. It was because it took more than 1500 years for human beings to overcome the quantitative notion of numbers and recognize the formality in negative numbers. Understanding negative numbers as formal ones resulted from the Copernican conversion in mathematical way of thinking. we first investigated the historic and the genetic process of the concept of negative numbers. Second, we analyzed the conceptual fields of negative numbers in the aspect of the additive and multiplicative structure. Third, we inquired into the levels of thinking on the concept of negative numbers on the basis of the historical and the psychological analysis in order to understand the formal concept of negative numbers. Fourth, we analyzed Korean mathematics textbooks on the basis of the thinking levels of the concept of negative numbers. Fifth, we investigated and analysed the levels of students' understanding of the concept of negative numbers. Sixth, we analyzed the symbolizing process in the development of mathematical concept. Futhermore, we tried to show a concrete way to teach the formality of the negative numbers concepts on the basis of such theoretical analyses.

  • The purpose of this study is to find new material for developing teaching and learning materials for the gifted class of elementary school students by using the rotatable tangram made by modifying the traditional tangram. Rotatable tangram can be justified by gifted students through mathematical communication. However, even gifted class students have some limitations in finding and justifying triangles and rectangles of all sizes unless they go through the 'symbolization' stage at the elementary school level. Therefore, students who need an inquiry process for letters and symbols need to provide supplementary learning materials and additional questions. It is expected that the material of rotatable tangram for the development of teaching and learning materials for elementary school gifted students will contribute to the development of mathematical reasoning and mathematical communication ability.
