Guidelines for big data projects in artificial intelligence mathematics education (인공지능 수학 교육을 위한 빅데이터 프로젝트 과제 가이드라인)

  • In today's digital information society, student knowledge and skills to analyze big data and make informed decisions have become an important goal of school mathematics. Integrating big data statistical projects with digital technologies in high school <Artificial Intelligence> mathematics courses has the potential to provide students with a learning experience of high impact that can develop these essential skills. This paper proposes a set of guidelines for designing effective big data statistical project-based tasks and evaluates the tasks in the artificial intelligence mathematics textbook against these criteria. The proposed guidelines recommend that projects should: (1) align knowledge and skills with the national school mathematics curriculum; (2) use preprocessed massive datasets; (3) employ data scientists' problem-solving methods; (4) encourage decision-making; (5) leverage technological tools; and (6) promote collaborative learning. The findings indicate that few textbooks fully align with these guidelines, with most failing to incorporate elements corresponding to Guideline 2 in their project tasks. In addition, most tasks in the textbooks overlook or omit data preprocessing, either by using smaller datasets or by using big data without any form of preprocessing. This can potentially result in misconceptions among students regarding the nature of big data. Furthermore, this paper discusses the relevant mathematical knowledge and skills necessary for artificial intelligence, as well as the potential benefits and pedagogical considerations associated with integrating technology into big data tasks. This research sheds light on teaching mathematical concepts with machine learning algorithms and the effective use of technology tools in big data education.

A Case Study on Application of Linear Function using Excel (엑셀을 통한 일차함수의 활용에 대한 사례연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to search the effective teaching-learning program by considering how affect on formation of linear function using Excel. This study was based on qualitative case study. The teaching experiment using Excel executed with five 8th graders' students for second research content. Teaching experiment was performed for two classes. Collecting the data was conducted via observations and interviews with students. The data include audio and video recording of the students' work, students' worksheets and detailed field notes. The conclusions drawn from teaching experiment are as follows: First, when students explored relevancy content of function in Excel environment, formation of concept of function was facilitated by experiencing operation of algebraic formulas, tables and graphs. We could infer that formation of concept was effected by conjecture activity and iterative process of feedback through Excel environment. Second, the students explored the changes very interestingly making algebraic formulas and presenting tables and graphs. The students were familiarized with observation on algebraic formulas, graphs and tables concurrently. Also, they tried to look for general rules through inductive observation. According to this study, we noticed that exploration teaming environment using Excel could supplement paper-and-pencil environment.

Comparative Study in Algebra Education with CAS: Korea and US cases (컴퓨터 대수체계(CAS) 대비 중등대수교육 기초 연구)

  • This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. An Improvement of Mathematics Course Using MathML in ICT Environment (MathML을 이용한 수학교과 ICT활용 교육 개선방안)

  • Although many mathematical teaching/learning materials are already developed in the web, diverse utilization of this materials such as calculation, searching, or reusing of expressions are limited since the expression is actually a figure. To cope with this, MathML which describing mathematical notation was developed. In the paper, we proposed the methods of developing teaching materials using MathML, making learning assistance tools which utilize MathML, and applying MathML to information exchange community for Mathematics courses in ICT environment. Using MathML to develop a teaching material makes easy to correct and reuse the mathematical notations conveniently. Furthermore, learning assistance tools made by placing MathML help teachers reorganize and utilize these materials in the classroom as well as enhancing the connection between mathematical notations and concepts. The web-board that can make a use the mathematical notations using MathML enables the teachers and students to exchange information actively. It also helps to fulfill different types of teaching using ICT such as "discussion on the web".

Analysis on High School Students' Recognitions and Expressions of Changes in Concentration as a Rate of Change (변화율 관점에서 농도 변화에 대한 인식과 표현의 변화 과정에 대한 분석)

  • The aim of the present study is twofold. One is to confirm a hypothesis that a student's rate concept influences her conceiving change of a function in the view of rate of change and the other is to build up foundations for understanding the transition process from her rate concept to the concept of rate of change when she investigates the change of concentration as an intensive quantity. We explored how three participating high school students recognized and expressed change of given functions by using their rate concept as a conceptual tool. The result indicates that a change in students' rate concept might have an effect on understanding how function values change in term of rate of change. We also expect that it could be a catalyst for further research for clarifying the relationship between students' rate concept and their development of a concept of rate of change as a foundation for learning calculus.

  • In the midst of the development of science and technology based on the 4th industrial revolution, the ROK Army is moving forward with the ARMY TIGER 4.0 system, a ground combat system that combines future advanced science and technology. The system is developing around an AI-based hyper-connected ground combat system, and has mobility, intelligence, and networking as core concepts. Especially, the dronebot combat system is used as a compound word that refers to unmanned combat systems including drones and ground unmanned systems. In future battlefields, it is expected that the use of unmanned and artificial intelligence-based weapon systems will increase. During the transition to a complete unmanned system, it is a very important issue to ensure connectivity individual unmanned systems themselves or between manned and unmanned systems on the battlefield. This paper introduces the Multiplexer Allocation Problem (MAP) for effective command control and communication of UAV/UGV, and proposes a heuristic algorithm. In addition, the performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by comparing the solutions and computing time. Also, we discuss future research area for the MAP.

A Study on the Learning-Teaching Plan about a Essential Concept of Decimal Fraction Based on Decimal Positional Notation (위치적 십진기수법을 본질로 하여 조직한 소수 개념 지도 방안 연구)

  • In this thesis, we designed a experimental learning-teaching plan of 'decimal fraction concept' at the 4-th grade level. We rest our plan on two basic premises. One is the fact that a essential concept of decimal fraction is 'polynomial of which indeterminate is 10', and another is the fact that the origin of decimal fraction is successive measurement activities which improving accuracy through decimal partition of measuring unit. The main features of our experimental learning-teaching plan is as follows. Firstly, students can experience a operation which generate decimal unit system through decimal partitioning of measuring unit. Secondly, the decimal fraction expansion will be initially introduced and the complete representation of decimal fraction according to positional notation will follow. Thirdly, such various interpretations of decimal fraction as 3.751m, 3m+7dm+5cm+1mm, $(3+\frac{7}{10}+\frac{5}{100}+\frac{1}{1000})m$ and $\frac{3751}{1000}m$ will be handled. Fourthly, decimal fraction will not be introduced with 'unit decimal fraction' such as 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, ${\cdots}$ but with 'natural number+decimal fraction' such as 2.345. Fifthly, we arranged a numeration activity ruled by random unit system previous to formal representation ruled by decimal positional notation. A experimental learning-teaching plan which presented in this thesis must be examined through teaching experiment. It is necessary to successive research for this task.

  • In this research, in order to investigate the principles for the development of mathematics textbook for decision-making based on storytelling, we conceptualized the educational meaning of decision-making and specified the principles and the methods for the textbook based on decision-making. We illustrated the principles and the methods by the cases from the model textbook for the conditional probability that we have developed. We discussed the implication for the future development and implementation of mathematics textbook for decision-making based on storytelling.

  • This paper was designed for the purpose of helping the functional comprehension on the concept of a circumcenter and an incenter of triangle and offering the help for teaching-learning process on their definitions. We analysed the characteristic of the definition on a circumcenter and an incenter of triangle and studied the context, mean and purpose on the definition. The definition focusing on the construction is the definition stressed on the consistency of the concept through the fact that it is possible to draw figure of the concept. And this definition is the thing that consider the extend of the concept from triangle to polygon. Meanwhile this definition can be confused because the concept is not connected with the terminology. The definition focusing on the meaning is easy to memorize the concept because the concept is connected with the terminology but is difficult to search for the concept truth. And this definition is the thing that has the grounds on the occurrence but is taught in a made-knowledge. The definition focusing on both the construction and meaning is the definition that the starting point is vague in the logical proof process. We hope that the results are used to improve the understanding the concept of a circumcenter and an incenter of triangle in the field of mathematical education.

The Characteristics of Middle School Mathematics Achievement Levels Based on the Results of the National Assessment of Educational Achievement from 2010 to 2012 (2010-2012년 국가수준 학업성취도 평가 결과에 나타난 중학교 수학과 성취수준별 학업성취 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the academic achievement characteristics in terms of proficiency levels through the in-depth analysis of mathematics test items and achievement standards of the National Assessment of Educational Achievement(NAEA) from 2010 to 2012, and to provide suggestions for teaching and assessing mathematics in middle schools. The results showed that 'Advanced level' students could fully understand the concept of mathematical terms and symbols as well as various mathematical properties presented in the national curriculum. However, 'Proficient level' students tended to feel difficult to apply linear function, properties of a plane figure, and a solid figure, while 'Basic level' students seemed to have trouble solving mathematical problems in almost all areas. Thus, it is necessary to identify the mathematical misconceptions that students have and to strengthen teaching, particularly, the areas of number and operation.
