  • The structure of a mathematics task shapes the aspects of learning of those who solve the task. This study explores the process of understandings on the statistical variability of primary school students. Students were given two problems with different degrees of structuring - a well-structured problem (WSP) and an ill-structured problem (ISP) - and discussed in a group to solve each task. The highest level of development achieved in both cases appeared to be similar. However, when given the ISP, students dynamically proposed ideas and justified the conclusion based on their hypothesis. Furthermore, all students actively participated in solving the ISP until the end whereas some students were marginalized while solving the WSP. This discrepancy results from the difference in the degrees of task structuring.

  • This study is based on the recognition that the school mathematics education should reinforce the heuristic and constructional aspects related with discoveries of mathematical rules and understanding of mathematical concepts from real world situations as well as the deductive and formal aspects emphasizing on mathematical contents precisely. The 11th grade students of one class from a city high school with average were chosen. They were given time to learn various functions of Excel in regular classes of "Information Society and Computer" subject. They don't have difficulty using cells, mathematical functions and statistical functions in spreadsheet. Experiment was performed for six weeks and there were two hours of classes in a week. Considering the results of this research, teaching materials using spreadsheets play an important role in helping students to experience probabilistic and statistical reasoning and construct mathematical thinking. This implies that teaching materials using spreadsheet provide students with an opportunity to interact with probabilistic and statistical situations by adopting engineering which can encourage students to observe and experience various aspects of real world in authentic situations.

  • Theory and fundamentals of mathematics consist mostly of proposition form. Activities by research of the proposition which leads to determine the true or false, justify the true propositions and refute with counterexample improve logical reasoning skills of students in emphases on mathematics education. Also, utilizing of counterexamples in school mathematics combines mathematical knowledge through the process of finding a counterexample, help the concept study and increase the critical thinking. These effects have been found through previous research. But many studies say that the learners have difficulty in generating counterexamples for false propositions and materials have not been developed a lot for the counterexample utilizing that can be applied in schools. So, this study analyzed the current textbook and examined the use of counterexamples and developed educational materials for counterexamples that can be applied at schools. That materials consisted of making true & false propositions and students was divided into three groups of academic achievement level. And then this study looked at the change of the students' thinking after counterexample classes. As a study result, in all three groups was showed a positive change in the cognitive domain and affective domain. Especially, in top-level group was mainly showed a positive change in the cognitive domain, in upper-middle group was mainly showed in the cognitive and the affective domain, in the sub-group was mainly found a positive change in the affective domain. Also in this study shows that the class that makes true or false propositions in education of utilizing counterexample, made students understand a given proposition, pay attention to easily overlooked condition, carefully observe symbol sign and change thinking of cognitive domain helping concept learning regardless of academic achievement levels of learners. Also, that class gave positive affect to affective domain that increase interest in the proposition and gain confidence about proposition.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of the questions presented in shapes area and Measurement area of elementary mathematics textbooks. For this purpose, the types of questions presented in shapes area and measurement area of elementary mathematics textbooks and their working functions were comparatively analyzed by area and by grade cluster. As a result of the analysis, the number of questions per lesson increased sharply in the 3rd and 4th grade cluster compared to the 1st and 2nd grade cluster in both shapes area and measurement area. In these two areas, the most common reasoning questions are presented. It is presented relatively more in measurement area than in shapes area. There was a clear difference between the types of questions presented in shapes area and measurement area. In common with the two areas, questions mainly were acted as a function to help students learn to reason mathematically, a function to help students to determine whether something is mathematically correct, and a function to help students learn to conjecture, invent, and solve problem. The characteristics of the questions identified in this study can provide teaching/learning implications for the design and application of the questions suitable for the guidance of shapes area and measurement area, and can be used as a reference material when writing mathematics textbooks.

  • Nowadays the education of Mathematics is more important than any other courses in the school. But the most students have felt the difficulty and uncomfortableness in studying Mathematics, especially the geometry course. Moreover teachers also consider that the teaching of geometry is the hardest part of Mathematics. Therefore we suggest an effective method of teaching the geometry course for the middle school students. We provide the activity papers which contain mathematics problems based on the practical life of students. And we analyze the effects of the activity papers using the questionnaire.

  • This study investigated the elementary school students' ability on the algebraic reasoning as generalized arithmetic. It analyzed the written responses from 648 second graders, 688 fourth graders, and 751 sixth graders using tests probing their understanding of the properties of whole number operations. The result of this study showed that many students did not recognize the properties of operations in the problem situations, and had difficulties in applying such properties to solve the problems. Even lower graders were quite successful in using the commutative law both in addition and subtraction. However they had difficulties in using the associative and the distributive law. These difficulties remained even for upper graders. As for the associative and the distributive law, students had more difficulties in solving the problems dealing with specific numbers than those of arbitrary numbers. Given these results, this paper includes issues and implications on how to foster early algebraic reasoning ability in the elementary school.

  • This study analyzed students' mathematical noticing in high school sequence classes based on students' two perceptions of sequence. Specifically, mathematical noticing was analyzed in four aspects: center of focus, focusing interaction, task features, and nature of mathematics activities, and the following results were obtained. First of all, the change pattern of central of focus could not be uniquely described by any one component among 'focusing interaction', 'task features', and 'the nature of mathematical activities'. Next, the interactions between the components of mathematical noticing were identified, and the teacher's individual feedback during small group activities influenced the formation of the center of focus. Finally, students showed two different modes of reasoning even within the same classroom, that is, focusing interaction, task features, and nature of mathematics activities that resulted in the same focus. It is hoped that this study will serve as a catalyst for more active research on students' understanding of sequence.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary school teachers' perceptions of the implementation of mathematical connections. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with teachers in a random sample across the country, and questionnaires completed by 567 teachers from 28 elementary schools were analyzed. The results of this study showed that teachers recognized intellectual connections more than social connections as mathematical connections need to be done in class. They recognized that connections between mathematical concepts and real-life in intellectual connections were realized more frequently in mathematics classes. In the methods of mathematical connections, the use of reasoning and reflection of students' activity results did not occur frequently. For resources many teachers wanted practice giving real lessons. On the basis of these results, this paper provides several implications for future research on implementing mathematical connections.
