  • There has been an ongoing symbiotic relationship between the history of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction(ICMI) and the broader history of mathematics education since 1908. Similarly, the International Congress on Mathematical Education(ICME) has played an important role in the direction of Mathematics education since its first congress in 1969. ICME-12 is due to be held in Seoul, Korea from July $8^{th}$ to $15^{th}$ 2012. To date, there has been no research paper concerning the history of the ICMI published in any Korean journal. In readiness for the upcoming ICME-12, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the history of the IMCI from the perspective of Mathematics education.

  • This Paper introduces a historical background of mathematical logic. Logic and mathematics were not developed dependently until the mid of the nineteenth century, when two streams of logic and mathematics came to form a river so that brought forth synergy effects. Since the mid-nineteenth century mathematization of logic were proceeded while attempts to reduce mathematics to logic were made. Against this background $G{\ddot{o}}del's$ proof shows the limitation of formalism by proving that there are true arithmetical propositions that are not provable.

  • As teachers need to understand how to select and use technology in mathematics education, analysis on history, characteristics, and effects of various technology used in school mathematics will facilitate effective use of technology. This thesis aims to analyze through literary studies the history, characteristics, and effects of using spreadsheets Excel, dynamic geometry softwares GSP, Cabri and CAS, the most commonly used technology in teaching and learning mathematics in Korea. And we also study the current trends on using technology in mathematics education in Korea by investigating research trend, secondary mathematics curriculums past and present in Korea, mathematics textbooks, and classroom environments.

  • This is a literature study about the concept of 'Division into Equal Parts' in middle school geometry. First, we notice that the concept of the division into equal parts in middle school geometry is given in four themes, which are those of line segments, angles, arches and areas. Second, we investigate and analyse the historical backgrounds of these four kinds of divisions into equal parts. Third, the possibility of extension in terms of method and concept was researched. Through the result of this study, we suggest that it is desirable to use effective utility of history in mathematical teaching and learning in middle school.

  • In this paper, we explore development of mathematical knowledge, especially calculus, non-Euclidean geometry, Euler's theorem, and the comparison of the number of elements in two infinite sets. And we analyze kinds of errors and the roles for errors with respect to increasing knowledge in mathematics.

  • The concepts of ratio and proportion are familiar with students but have difficulties in use. The purpose of this paper is to identify the meanings of the concepts of ratio and proportion through investigating the historical development process of the meanings and representations of them. The early meanings of ratio and proportion were arithmetical meanings, however, geometrical meanings had taken the place of them because of the discovery of incommensurability. After the development of algebraic representation, the meanings of ratio and proportion have been growing into algebraic meanings including arithmetical and geometrical meanings. Through the historical development process of ratio and proportion, it is observable that the meanings of mathematical concepts affect development of symbols, and the development of symbols also affect the meanings of mathematical concepts.

  • In school mathematics, the concept of continuous functions has been intuitively taught. Many researches reported that many students identified the continuity of function with the connectedness of the graphs. Several researchers proposed some ideas which are enhancing the formal aspects of the definition as alternative. We analysed the historical developments of the concept of continuous functions and drew pedagogical implications for the intuitive teaching of continuous functions from the result of analysis.

  • In this paper, we analyze the basic concepts of permutation polynomials over finite fields, and the historical background through the use of the major classes of permutation polynomials over the fields. And also, we find a method of the polynomial representation with respect to cycles on the fields.
