  • The purpose of this study was to examine the students' problem solving ability according to numeric expression and the semantic types of addition and subtraction word problems. For this, a research was to analyze the addition and subtraction calculation ability, word problem solving ability of the selected $2^{nd}$ grade(118) and 3rd grade(109) students. We got the conclusion as follows: When the students took the survey to assess their ability to solve the numerical expression and the word problems, the correct answer rates of the result unknown problems was larger than those of the change unknown problems or the start unknown problems. the correct answer rates of the change add-into situation was larger than those of the part-part-whole situation in the result unknown addition word problems: they often presented in text books. And, in the cases of the result unknown subtraction word problems that often presented in text books, the correct answer rates of the change take-away situation was the largest. It seemed probably because the students frequently experienced similar situations in the textbooks. We know that the formal calculation ability of the students was a precondition for successful word problem solving, but that it was not a sufficient condition for that.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide instructional suggestions by investigating the spatial sense and spatial reasoning ability of 6th grade students. The questionnaire consisted of 20 questions, 10 for spatial visualization and 10 for spatial orientation. The number of subjects for the survey was 145. The processes through which the students solved the problems were the basis for the assessment of their spatial reasoning. The result of the survey is as follows: First, students performed better in spatial visualization than in spatial orientation. With regard to spatial visualization, they were better in transformation than in rotation. With regard to spatial orientation, students performed better in orientation sense and structure cognitive ability than in situational sense. Second, the students that weren't excellent in spatial visualization tended to answer the familiar figures without using mental images. The students who lacked spatial orientation experienced difficulties finding figures observed from the sides. Third, students had high frequency rate on the cognition and use of transformation, the development and application of visualization methods and the use of analysis and synthesis. However they had a lower rate on a systematic approach and deductive reasoning. Further detailed investigation into how students use spatial reasoning, and apply it to actual teaching practice as a device for advancing their geometric thinking is necessary.

  • The aim of this study was to find the effects of open-ended problems on mathematical creativity and brain function. In this study, one class of first grade students were allocated randomly into two groups. Each group solved different problems. The experimental group solved the open-ended problems and the comparison group solved the closed-problems. Mathematical creativity was tested by the paper test. And Brain function was tested by an EEG(electroencephalogram) tester. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, this study analyzed how the open-ended problems are effective on mathematical creativity. This analysis showed that it had a meaningful influence on the mathematical creativity(p=0.46). Accordingly, we could find out that open-ended problems make the student connect the mathematical concept and idea and think variously. Secondly, this study analyzed the effect of open-ended problems on brain function. This analysis showed that it did not have a meaningful influence on the brain function(p=.073) statistically but the experimental group's evaluation was higher than comparison groups' at the post-test. It also had a meaningful influence on the brain attention quotient(left) (p=.007), attention quotient(right) (p=.023) and emotion tendency quotient(p=.025). As a result of such tests, we could find out that open-ended problems are effective on brain function, especially on the attention ability. With the use of the open-ended problems, students could show quick understanding and response. An emotion tendency is also developed in the process. Because various answers are accepted, the students gain an internal reward at the process of finding an answer. Putting the above results together, we could find that open-ended problem is effective on mathematical creativity and brain function.

  • This article presents the effects of estimation activities related to speed and density on students' concept-understanding, answer-prediction, and answer-calculation in problem solving procedure with quantitative and qualitative methods. Participants were one hundred and ninety two seventh graders from one coeducational school in Seoul. Half of them participated in the estimation activities and the other half did in the measurement activities. Discussions of three students during estimation activities on density and their post-interviews were tape-recorded. Pre- and post-assessment scores were analyzed for the whole classes, and students' discussions and interviews served this research as evidences for the case analysis. Results of scores indicated that students in the estimation activities were significantly better than those in the measurement activities for predicting answers, but not for understanding concepts. Analysis of the cases revealed that estimation activity helped them to understand the relations of mass, volume and density, empirically, which enhanced their prediction ability. Furthermore, the ability could help a student with low calculation ability to comprehend the calculation problems. Thus, it is concluded that estimation activities could influence students' empirical learning on quantitative concepts, which enhanced their prediction ability.

  • The purpose of this study is to analysis eye tracking for high school students' learning styles in the process of solving in the behavioral domains of the College Scholastic Ability Test on Earth Science I. The subjects of this study were 50 students from two classes out of 4 classes in E high school in Chungcheong province. Among them, we conducted experiments by randomly sampling 2 students of each type of learning based on the criteria that they had not encountered the problem of Earth Science I from the past two years. The findings indicate that the item correctness rate of divergers, assimilators, convergers, and accommodators were higher in the knowledge domain, application domain, knowledge-understanding domain, and understanding domain. This confirms that there is a difference among the four learning styles in the level of achievement according to the behavioral areas of the assessment questions. The latter finding was that the high eye-share of AOI 2 appeared higher than AOI 1, 3, 4 in the course of solving the problems. This is because the four types of learners pay more careful attention to the AOI 2 area, which is the cue-or-information area of problem solving, that is, the Table, Figure, and Graph area. Therefore, in order to secure the fairness and objectivity of the selection, it is necessary that an equal number of questions of each behavioral domain be selected on the Earth Science I Test of the College Scholastic Ability Test in general. Besides, it seems to be necessary that the knowledge, understanding, application, and the behavior area of the inquiry be highly correlated with the AOI 2 area in development of test questions.

  • This study is about how differ math anxiety according to the features of brain preference. In order to solve questions, BPI test and math anxiety test were done to high school students in the second grade. The test sheets were analyzed by ANOVA and MANOVA using SPSS 14.0. The result was found out that math anxiety was high in the order of left-brain preferences, both-brain preferences, and right-brain preferences. High level of math anxiety among students with right-brain preferences seem to be influenced by the right brain which prefers emotional features. Therefore, students need to stimulate their left brain by writing and reading something a lot when they solve math questions. Also, teachers can lessen math anxiety of students by give them opportunities to solve step-by-step questions, using various visual teaching materials promoting students' reasoning ability which can help them solve questions in a systematic and analytic way.
