  • The purpose of this study is to investigate preservice secondary teachers' understanding and modification capacity of tasks from mathematics textbooks. This study conducted a survey about how preservice teachers understand the features of mathematical tasks and how they would select and modify tasks appropriately from the curriculum and for lesson goals. The findings from the analysis suggest that the preservice teachers seem to recognize Procedures Without Connections tasks as the high-level tasks. Further, 43 percent of the total numbers appropriately selected the tasks from the curriculum and for lesson goals. Most of the preservice teachers appear to find it difficult to modify low-level tasks into high-level tasks.

  • In this study, we have accomplished content area reading activities for pre-service teachers since 2003. These activities were guided each year to students of the college of education. We proceeded our content area reading activities by four courses. Four courses consisted of reading the book, discussion of reading, announcement of the results, reminding announcement. After content area reading activities, the pre-service teachers have learned naturally the knowledge and ideas that will help in teaching mathematics. And they have shared and expand their knowledge and ideas with colleagues. Moreover the pre-service teachers came to realize that content area reading is very important in pre-service mathematics teacher education. In the study, it was suggested that there is a need to provide opportunities to experience the content area reading for pre-service teachers in mathematics teacher education.

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of the use of link sheet in pre-service mathematics teachers' mathematics learning. The study was conducted in Calculus course during 1 semester with 25 pre-service mathematics teachers. According to the results of questionnaires and focused group interviews, the use of the link sheet helped students to develop deeper understandings of mathematical concepts and mathematical communication ability. In addition, the use of the link sheet encouraged students to realize the value of the mathematics and it also played a central role in creating active and self-directed learning atmosphere.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the recognition and opinions of gifted students, as well as their parents and teachers, on applying the artistic components to current educational programs for high ability students, gifted in mathematics and/or sciences. Questionnaires were distributed to 84 gifted students, 59 parents, and 23 teachers in elementary schools in Seoul Metropolitan area. Findings of this study include: (a) More than 1/4 of gifted students in mathematics or sciences reported that they are talented in both math/science and arts, (b) most of students, parents, and teachers believe that arts education is useful for cultivating academic talents of gifted students, (c) gifted students and their parents prefer 'Science and Arts School for the Gifted' to 'Science School for the Gifted', if both options are available.

  • This study investigated the perception and utilization about computer of beginning secondary mathematics teachers by utilization frequency of computer. To increase utilization frequency of computer in school mathematics, our finding shows that beginning secondary mathematics teachers should have an interest in computer utilization and perceive computers as an important tool for mathematics learning. In addition, they are likely to use more frequently computer under the condition that computers have sufficient class materials and supplement their shortcomings that have derived less usage in math classes. Therefore, future studies have to investigate not only how to develope textbooks and run after-school classes but also how to make creative discretional activities by computer, which makes computers more useful for teacher training. In sum, the results of case studies for computer usability should be released to motivate computer utilization and increase mathematical thinking ability.

  • This study aims to improve teacher education by analyzing the causes and backgrounds of which pre-service mathematics teachers experience learning difficulties on the topic of discrete mathematics. To this end, we conducted a questionnaire and an evaluation on the topic of discrete mathematics, and the obtained data were analyzed. The results show that (1) pre-service mathematics teachers need to share their perceptions of the need for discrete mathematics education; (2) a review of the adequacy of the discrete mathematical content and its credits are required; (3) the causes of their learning difficulties need to be looked at from a different perspective than the learning factors. And two implications were obtained. First, it is necessary to study the systematicity and sequence of content elements of discrete mathematics in the aspect of its continuity of curriculum of secondary school and university. Second, it is required consideration for adjusting the ratio of discrete mathematics to secondary teachers' employment examination.

  • The purpose of this study is to draw implication for the teacher education program in association with creativity through analysing teaching behavior for fostering creativity of the mathematics teachers at the primary and secondary schools. In order to do so, a survey was performed by sampling primary, middle, and high school teachers. According to the results, there is significant difference in teachers' behavior for fostering creativity in the perspective of school classification (primary and secondary school), but not gender, region, and career of teachers. In other words, there is significant difference in teaching behaviors for fostering creativity between primary and secondary school teachers, herein the score of teaching behavior of former is higher than latter. Furthermore, the result of teachers' recognition survey on the possibility of fostering students' creativity via education shows that the teachers of primary schools are more relatively positive than those of secondary schools on the matter.

  • In this study, we conducted classroom activities that are exploring and explaining visualized materials for problem solving of school mathematics with pre-service teachers in 2007~2009. After finishing these classroom activities, pre-service teachers recorded an afternote that includes changes of their thinking about mathematics and mathematics education through these activities in this study. We collected various opinions of pre-service mathematics teachers. From the analysis these data, we searched educational effects of our classroom activities. Through conducting the practice like these classroom activities of our study, pre-service mathematics teachers will have an opportunity of a practical training that supports the teaching of mathematical problem-solving. Moreover their PCK will be enhanced. Also, They will learn a good way to realize the aim of school mathematics curriculum.
