  • TPCK is the knowledge of intersection in mathematics, technology, and pedagogy. This study investigated a teacher's change of his TPCK. He participated in the professional development program which was designed to develop mathematics teachers' TPCK. The professional development program was based on using spreadsheets in teaching mathematics. The researcher suggests a consideration for the integration of technology in mathematics education and mathematics teacher education. The program consisted of a four week summer professional development program and three actual mathematics classroom teaching. Ten teachers took part in the program. One teacher who changed his TPCK most was selected to investigate what made it change most. Following teaching practice was the most influential factor in changing his TPCK.

  • The purpose of this study was to find ways to improve teacher training programs for mathematics teachers' professional development in Korea. To do so, we first investigated current programs for in-service mathematics teachers in Korea. Then five professional development programs for mathematics teachers in foreign countries were searched and described, which have clear concepts of professionalism and distinct strategies in terms of their aims, processes, focal points, financial supports, etc. We then analyzed the advantages and disadvantages and the types of each program. Based on the analyses, we finally discussed what we learned to make mathematics teacher training programs better for their professional development in Korea.

  • As part of developmental research of a student-teaching practicum program, this research analyzed a mathematics preservice teacher's questioning. The practicum program is based on the model of reflective practice in a collaborative inquiry community for learning-to-teach. This paper describes how a preservice teacher's questioning pattern had changed on the program participation and explain how the change in discourse can be considered as an indicator for the pre service teacher's professional development. Suggestions for the future program development are discussed.

  • In this paper we carried out a survey targeting 185 elementary, middle and high school mathematics teachers to identify their conception, satisfaction, requirements of after-school mathematics education. The survey results show that we need to develop newer programs, reduce teachers' task, build a more effective system for supporting and researching after-school mathematics education, and so on. Using these survey results we understand the facts of existing after-school mathematics education and provide preliminary data for discussing how to invigorate and advance the after-school mathematics education.

  • The focus of the present study is on examining a research trend of teachers' professional development in mathematics. In do this, this study investigated the meaning and standards of professional development about mathematics, examining the characteristics of successful mathematics education professional programs, and looking for the processes of teachers' professionalization about mathematics. The findings of this study point out as follows: Teachers' professional development about mathematics implies the improvement of the quality of mathematics instruction following improving the quality of mathematics learning through well-structured mathematics teacher education programs. To do this, teachers need to have shared vision about how to teach mathematics, to have profound knowledge related to the mathematics subject, and to actively participate in teachers' professional development programs in mathematics. The results suggest the common characteristics of successful programs of mathematics teachers' professional development. The results of this study suggest that teachers need to have passion and efforts to improve teachers' professionalization about mathematics, and research on teacher professional development should be based on understanding about teachers. Also, more teacher-researchers to connect educational theories with educational practices are recommended, and a model for teachers' professional development program of mathematics appropriate to the context of Korea needs to be developed.

  • This study investigated the perceptions of beginning teachers about teacher knowledge. Reflections and improvement of their class knowledge have been perceived as the most important factors by beginning teachers. In terms of utilization of actual classes, teacher knowledge, mathematical concepts and correlations such as connection linked to class contents and hierarchy have been used the most. Among the needed teachers knowledge, knowledge of student understanding and mathematics content knowledge was the most essential knowledge that could be mainly formed through classroom experience and teacher training program. On the other hand, knowledge about technology and assessment was not necessary or useful factor for beginning teachers. To facilitate formation of beginning teachers' knowledge, teacher introductory program, mentoring program, interactive relationship with teacher education institutes, curriculum improvement for teacher education institute and the development and dissemination of various teachers training program would be required.

  • In this study, we carried out mathematics teacher-training course. The topic of this training course is the understanding of content area reading in school mathematics. The teacher-training course is planned to guide mathematics teachers can perform effectively the teaching of content area reading. In particular, we illustrated the pre-service mathematics teacher education practice. Mathematics teachers investigated various teaching strategies that can lead their students read reading materials related to mathematics effectively. In this training courses, teachers reflects on their own experience and they have an opportunity to learn the new strategies that improve their teaching methods. Teacher educator and in-service teachers share and discuss their practices, they have a meaningful learning experiences. In this study, we presented the processes of the teacher-training course and the results of practice. Furthermore, on the basis of the limitations of this study, we suggested recommendations for the future teacher training program.
