  • The longterm trend and interrelationship with depth of temperature and salinity in coastal waters of Korea are studied using coastal oceanographic observation and serial oceanographic data measured by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. Temperature of coastal waters of Korea except southwestern sea of Korea where cold water appears to increase in summer. In case of temperature offshore, surface temperature of East Sea increases, the reverse, for 50m and 100m decreases. Temperature in South Sea of Korea increases in whole depth and for the Yellow Sea, surface temperature increases, but for 50m decreases. In case of salinity offshore, surface salinity of East Sea decreases, but for 50m increases. Surface salinity in South Sea of Korea decreases, the reverse, form 50m and 100m increases. salinity in the Yellow Sea decrease in whole depth According to the result of interrelationship analysis, for temperature relationship coefficients of 50m and 100m in the East Sea and South Sea of Korea is higher, however, for the Yellow sea the interrelationship between 50m and 100m is lower. In case of salinity, the interrelationship between surface and 50m, and for the South Sea of Korea, between 50m and 100m, and for the Yellow Sea, between surface and 50m is higher.

  • Vertical distribution of eggs and larvae of Maurolicus muelleri were studied in the south-eastern waters of Korea during 1985 and 1986. Samples were collected vertically at three different layers, 0~30 m, 30~50m and 50~100m. The densities of egg and larva were high in August. Eggs and zooplankton were abundant around the thermocline in the temperature range of $10{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ at the layers of 50 m depth in 1985, and 30~100m depth in 1986. Eggs in the cleavage stage were abundant at the layer of 50~100m depth, while those of processing embryonic body formation were tended to concentrate at the layer of 30~50m depth. The vertical distribution of each developmental stage differed according to sampling time. They were distributed uniformly at water column from 30 m to 100m depth in the midnight, but concentrated at the layer from 30 m to 50 m from dawn to sunset. Before and after midnight, eggs in the cleavage stage were most abundant. It was assumed that M. muelleri spawned at the layer of 50~100m depth around the midnight, and the eggs ascended to the layer of 30~50m depth with development.

  • The hardness and physical properties of soils were measured in hiking trails of Mt. Halla and Darangshiorum in Jeju Island to examine the characteristics and formative factors of an aquiclude induced by human trampling. The soil hardness, being generally the highest on trails, decreases outward and shows the lowest on adjacent slopes in a natural condition. The bulk density and solid phase also demonstrates a similar tendency, then implying that the aquiclude occurs in the central part of trails. Although the formation of a hard layer in trails is fundamentally attributed to human trampling, the environmental factors such as landform, lithology, soil and vegetation play a role in the occurrence of the aquiclude. Soil compaction varies with the gradient and location of trails which affects a transport and deposition of soil particles to produce a hard layer. Soil compaction also depends on the physical properties of soils including the soil texture largely affected by lithology. Vegetation is not directly related with the formation of a hard layer, but affects its dimensions through an enlargement rate of bare trails depending on the response and resistance of plants to human trampling.

  • We investigated seasonal variation of sediment-water oxygen and inorganic nitrogen fluxes, and denitrification at tidal flat sediments located in the Nakdong River Estuary from July 2005 to September 2006. Net oxygen fluxes, measured with sediment incubations at in situ temperature, varied from -37.0 to $0.5mmol\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$. Oxygen fluxes into the sediments from the overlying water increased due to the increased water temperature. Denitrification rate ($4{\sim}2732{\mu}mol\;N\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$) in this study was higher compared to the other Korean coast measured with the same method. Denitrification showed the same seasonal variation as oxygen fluxes. Denitrification rate based on $^{15}N$-nitrate showed a strong correlation with nitrate flux into the sediments from the overlying water. Denitrification via "water column supplied nitrate ($D_w$)", calculated from Isotope pairing technique, also correlated well with nitrate flux into the sediments. Nitrate from water column seems to account for seasonal variation of denitrification in Nakdong River Estuary. To understand general patterns and trends of biogeochemical processes of sediments in the Nakdong River Estuary, we categorized biogeochemical fluxes measured in this study according to direction and sizes of fluxes. Type 1(high oxygen and inorganic nitrogen fluxes into the sediments and high denitrification) occurred in summer, whereas Type 2(low oxygen and inorganic nitrogen fluxes into the sediments and low denitrification) occurred in rest of the season. Intertidal flat sediments seem to react sensitively to influence of freshwater from the Nakdong River.

  • Hydrography of the Korea Strait was influenced by the various water masses such as Korean coastal water, East Sea cold water, and Tsushima Current. Anchovy larvae were frequently found in the area influenced by the Tsushima Current. Anchovy appeared in all seasons and were most abundant in summer. Anchovy was more abundant in the middle layer(30~70m) than the surface layer in spring and summer and was little in the deeper layer beyond the depth of 100m. It was most abundant in the surface layer in autumn, and decreased toward the deeper layer. They were more abundant in the middle layer(30~50m) than in the surface layer and the bottom layer in winter. Anchovy was most abundant in the depth of 30m to 70m during the day time, however it was more abundant in the surface layer during the night time. Although vertical distribution patterns of abundance varied seasonally and diurnally, most of the larval anchovy distributed in the upper layer within the depth of 100m and in the upper layer above the thermocline in summer and autumn.

  • Vertical measurement of CTDT at about 30 min intervals and spatial surface temperature, salinity, and concentration of suspended particulate matters were conducted to elucidate the character of water column and the dispersal pattern in a floating ice-dominated fjord, Marian Cove, West Antarctica. Marian Cove showed two distinct water layers in terms of turbidity; 1) cold, fresh, and turbid surface plume in the upper 2 m,2) warm, saline, and relatively clean Maxwell Bay inflow between 15-45 m in water depth. Thermal melting of Maxwell Bay inflow and tidewater glacier/floating ices developed the surface mixed layer and the activity of floating ices cause Maxwell Bay inflow to be unstable. Due to the unstable water column, the development of Maxwell Bay inflow and subsequent surface plume are not influenced by tidal frequency. Coastal current generated by strong northwesterly wind may extend warm, saline, and turbid surface plume into the central part of the cove along the northern coast via the western coast of Weaver Peninsula. Terrigenous sediments of meltwaters from the glaciated ice cliffs near the corner of tidewater glacier and some coasts enter into the cove and their dispersion depends upon the hydrographic regimes (tide, wind, wave etc.). At the period of spring tide, the strong wind stress with the northwesterly wind direction reserve suspended sediment-fed surface plume and so allow the possibility of deposition of terrigenous sediments within the basin of cove.

  • This study investigated the effect of phosphorus fractionation on the phosphorus release from the sediments of Juksan reservoir in Yeongsan River. The field sediments were collected, incubated, and analyzed with respect to phosphorus fractionation of sediments and total phosphorus (TP) of overlying water after 7 days. The total amount of inorganic phosphorus of YS2 site was higher than YS1 site. Al-P and Fe-P were major constituents of inorganic phosphorus. During the incubation, Al-P, Fe-P and Ca-P were increased and Red-P was decreased at both sites. YS1 site showed increased TP concentration of overlying water, however, YS2 had opposite trend during the incubation. Counting on the particle size distribution of YS1 and YS2, particle size distribution is major factor to control the TP concentration of overlying water. There were positive relationship between Fe-P and TP and negative relationship between Red-P. From the results, it is essential to continuously monitor the sediment phosphorus fraction in order to control the TP concentration of the water.

  • This study was performed to investigate antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties of Opuntia humifusa (OH) stems. OH stems were extracted with hexane, methanol, butanol and water. The methanol and hexane fraction exhibited strong antimicrobial activities on three strains of microbes, Rhodococcus equi, Staphylococcus aureus, and Clostridium perfringens. In the peroxynitrite scavenging effect ($ONOO^-$) of OH stems, the antioxidative activity of methanol, butanol and water fraction but not hexane fraction showed significant increases in a concentration-dependent manner. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of OH stems were high in the butanol fraction compared with other fractions. Anti-proliferation effects on the B16-F10, HepG2, HT29, and MCF-7 cell lines were significantly higher in the methanol and hexane fractions than in the water and butanol fractions at $100{\mu}g/mL$ concentration of extracts. These results suggest that OH stems can be used for the development of functional foods with biological activity.
