Role and Process of Abduction in Elementary School Students' Generation of Hypotheses concerning Vapor Condensation (수증기 응결에 관한 초등학생들의 가설 생성에서 귀추의 역할과 과정)

  • The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that student's abductive reasoning ability plays an important role in hypothesis-generating about vapor condensation, and student's hypothesis-generating requires their causal explicans as well as experience. To test the hypotheses, the instruments of hypothesis-generation, prior knowledge, and experience with vapor condensation were developed and administered to 6th grade students. This study found that 72 subjects among 89 students who had prior knowledge about vapor condensation failed to apply their prior knowledge to hypothesis-generating about the vapor condensation. This result showed that the students' failure in hypothesis-generating was related to their deficiency in abductive reasoning ability. In addition, this study showed that 54 subjects among 56 students who had experience with vapor condensation also failed to generate hypotheses. This result supported that student's causal explanations were separated from their experience. Therefore, this study suggests that science education should include the teaching of abductive reasoning skills for developing student's hypothesis-generating skills.

A Description of American Students' Intuitive Ideas About "Water in the Atmosphere" at Fifth-, Eighth -, Eleventh - Grades, and College Level (미국 5-, 8-, 11-학년 및 대학교 학생들의 대기 중의 물 개념에 대한 직관적 해결)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 (가)학생들의 "공기중의 물"에 대한 직관척 견해와 그 특성들을 파악하여 기술하고, (나) 나이와 학습 능력의 증가에 따른 직관적 견해의 분포 및 변화 경향의 파악 및 기술(description)에 있다. 미국 텍사스주 중부에서 36명의 연구대상 학생들이 선발되었다(5-, 8-, 11-학년 및 대학교 학생 각각 9명씩). 대학생들을 제외한 각 학년은 3명 씩의 우수, 보통 및 열퉁 학생들로 구성되었다. 연구 방법은 현상에 대한 면담법(Interview-About-Phenomena)이 사용되었다. 대기 중의 물은 7개의 종속개념(수증기, 습도, 증발, 웅결, 승화 I 과 II, 그리고 이슬점)으로 세분되어 조사되었다. 연구 결과 각 종속개념마다 3개에서 7개까지 여러 직관적 견해들이 파악되었다. 학년과 학습능력이 증가 할수록 학생들은 더 정교한 직관적 견해를 보유하고 있었다. 파악된 직관적 견해들의 재구성(restructuring) 또는 보다 정교한(more sophisticated) 견해로의 변화는 종속개념에 따라 다르다. 직관적 견해들이 재구성되기 쉬움에 따라 종속개념들을 배열한 것올 "재구성 계열"(Restructuring series)이라 정의 하였으며 이는 다음과 같다. 수증기-습도-이슬점-응결-중발-승화 I 과 II. 이 연구의 결과는 과학교수 전략 및 과학 학습교재의 고안과 개발, 과학교사 양성과정, 그리고 과학학습 평가 등에 활용되어져야 할 것이다.

Design and Experiment of Lab-scale Contrail Generator (Lab-scale 비행운 발생장치 설계 및 시험)

  • Contrail is a kind of cloud that is formed during the flight by vapor condensation of engine exhaust in a cold atmospheric condition. Owing to the negative effects of contrails on the environment and in military applications, several studies for contrail mitigation had been performed in developed countries. The goal of this research is to design a lab-scale contrail generator, and to validate the contrail mitigation technology suggested by previous studies. The contrail generator was made using superheated vapor and a low temperature wind tunnel. Using this generator, the ineffectiveness of ethanol and surfactant suggested in the previous paper on contrail mitigation was found experimentally.

Earth Science Prospective Teachers' Perceptions on the Relationship between Absolute Humidity and Dew Point Temperature (절대 습도와 이슬점 온도의 관계에 대한 지구과학 예비 교사들의 인식)

  • A questionnaire was administered, and all responses were analyzed to examine prospective teachers' conceptual understanding of the relationship between dew point temperature and absolute humidity in air parcels. The responses revealed that many prospective teachers have substantial misconceptions about the relationship. For example, some thought that the absolute humidity and the dew point temperature are proportional to each other, and that the dew point temperature is proportional to the water vapor mass in the parcel. The misconceptions seemingly stemmed from inadequate descriptions on the relationship in middle-school science textbooks of the 7th and 2007 revised curricula. The study notes that the first year students' textbook of the 2015 revised curriculum introduced the concepts of evaporation, condensation, and volume changes as a function of gaseous pressure and temperature, from a perspective of molecular motion. It is suggested that keeping this perspective in the middle school curriculum, while introducing water vapor pressure as the measure of water vapor amount and dew point temperature, should help prevent middle school teachers and students from having misconceptions. There should be a concerted effort to make the science curriculum more consistent and coherent across the grade levels.

해무 탐지 및 예측 기술의 현황 및 미래상

  • 해무는 해면에 인접한 층에서 수증기가 응결하여 대기 중에 부유하는 현상으로 기상학적으로 수평 가시거리가 1km이하 일때로 정의되며 해무로 인해 항공기 이착륙 지연, 교통사고, 운항 통제, 인명 피해 등 사회적, 경제적 피해를 유발하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 해무 발생, 탐지, 예측과 관련한 연구를 비교 분석하여 향후 연구개발의 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 해무 발생, 예측과 관련하여 연구개발이 진행되어 왔으나 해무의 특성상 규칙성이 약하고 고정적인 측정법이나 이를 다루기 위한 네트워크가 부족하여 예측하기가 어렵다. 특히, 국내에서는 국립해양조사원과 기상청에서 해무 탐지 및 예측에 관한 연구개발 및 서비스가 진행되고 있으나 현업화가 이루어지지 않거나 특정지점에 대한 정보만 제공되고 있는 한계가 있다. 따라서, CCTV영상, 인공위성 영상, 시정계, 기상자료, 수치모형을 통해 수집된 정보를 통합하여 예측할 수 있는 인공지능기반의 해무 탐지 및 예측 기술개발이 진행되어야 할 것이다.

A Trend for the Contrail Reduction Technology (비행운 저감 기술 동향)

  • Contrail is type of clouds which are formed by a condensation of water vapour from the aircraft exhaust when the aircraft is flying the cold atmosphere. Since contrails have considerable effect on greenhouse-effect and military stealth efficiency, researches about contrail avoidance technology has been conducted for decades. However, none of the previous researches concerning contrail avoidance was carried out in Korea. Thus, review of the previous study regarding contrail reduction is absolutely needed. In this paper, researches conducted by several countries are categorically introduced, and practicabilities of their methods are analyzed. This paper also suggests some practical and systematized way to conduct future researches about contrail avoidance.

A Study on Feasibility of Cloud Seeding in Korea (한반도에서의 인공증우 가능성에 대한 연구)

  • The feasibility of cloud seeding in Korea is presented from analyses of precipitation, cloud amount, satellite data, and upper air data. The daily mean precipitation over Dae-Kwan-Ryong is the largest(~4.5 mm/day), while the intensity of precipitation (amount of yearly rainfall divided by the frequency of rain days) over Southern area is above 14 mm/day, which shows the largest in Korea. Both the daily mean and the intensity of precipitation over Andong area are the smallest with values of ~2.7 mm/day and ~11 mm/day, respectively. In the meanwhile, the occurrence frequency of appropriate cloud top temperature (-10'~-30') for cloud seeding over the region has a large value (~130 days/year). The precipitation patterns of the region vary with wind direction and intensity calculated from 43 AWSs(Automatic Weather Station) and the additional 7 rain guages which were installed along Northern and Southern part of the Sobaek mountain. The Sc(Stratocumulus) cloud type over Andong is frequently observed, and Cirrus and Altostratus next. From the results, it is estimated that the feasibility of cloud seeding over the area would be high if a proper strategy of cloud seeding is set up. LCL (Lifting Condensation Level) and CCL (Convective Condensation Level) have the most frequency in 1000-950 hPa being occupied 4/9 of total analysis period and in 400-500 hPa, respectively, with both small variations from season to season. The correlation between vapor mixing ratio and CCL is the highest in Summer and the lowest in Winter. It means that the height of cumulus in Summer is high with an abundant water vapor but vice versa in Winter, and that the strategy of cloud seeding should be different with seasons.

Development of a Rubric for Assessing Middle School Students' Conceptual Understanding about Dew Point (이슬점에 대한 중학생들의 개념 이해 평가 루브릭 개발)

  • In this study, we developed a rubric for assessing middle school students' conceptual understanding about dew point. For this purpose, we analyzed 9th grade students' responses collected by using a multi-tiers constructed-response item of National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) and classified the types of the responses according to their characteristics. In addition, we analyzed the distribution of student response types according to mean achievement scores and developed an assessment rubric of conceptual understanding about dew point. The findings are as follows: First, the analysis of student responses to finding dew point in the saturation curve showed that many students had no or lack understanding of the scientific concept of dew point. Second, as a result of analyzing the student response to the water vapor condensation process at dew point, the proportion of scientific conception types was very low, while the proportion of misconception types was relatively high and the types varied as well. Third, a four- level assessment rubric was developed based on the analysis of the distribution of student response types according to the mean achievement scores. Based on the findings, we suggested the development and utilization of assessment rubric in the field of Earth science education.

Modification of Conventional Freeze Dryer (진공동결 건조기의 개발에 관한 연구)

  • A pilot plant scale freeze dryer was designed and manufactured and its performance was tested. Freezing capacity of water vapor in the developed freeze dryer was 8㎏/batch and heating and defrosting methods were conduction and hot gas types, respectively. And exhausting time of vacuum pump was 7-8 minutes and temperature of cold trap was kept below $-50^{\circ}C$. In the freeze drying of fruits and vegetables, its optimum and maximum drying capacities were 2 and 4㎏/batch, respectively. Performance of the new freeze dryer was compared quite well with a foreign made freeze dryer.

  • $CO_2$ extinguishing system is the most $\phi$pular among the gas extinguishing system. $CO_2$ is usually stored with liquified state. But, it gasifies at the tip of nozzle when $CO_2$ was released through the pipe and head. A ro$\alpha$n temperature is very low when $CO_2$ was released. So electrical instrument, magnetic storage equipment and memory semiconductor are electrically or physically injured by cooling effect in a few minutes. So, we intend to find out temperature profile and electrical damage in compartment area, and supply basic d data for research and making standards and code through the full scale experiment. As result of experiment on the damage due to cooling effect from $CO_2$ extinguishing system, i instantaneous discharging temperature. was $-82.5^{\circ}C$ in average. An average temp. in the compartment after discharging $CO_2$ was $-40^{\circ}C$.
