우리나라 수입함수추정(輸入函數推定)에 있어서 수입단가(輸入單價)와 수입물가(輸入物價)의 비교(比較)

  • 외환(外換) 및 자본자유화(資本自由化)의 진전에 따라 환율(換率)의 변동폭이 커지면서 환율(換率)이 국제수지(國際收支)에 미치는 영향에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 환율(換率)이 국제수지(國際收支)에 미치는 효과는 일차적으로 우리나라 수출입함수(輸出入函數)의 가격탄력성(價格彈力性)에 의해 결정되므로 정확한 탄성치(彈性値)를 추정하는 일은 이론적으로나 정책적으로 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 본고에서는 우리나라 수입함수(輸入函數)의 소득(所得) 및 가격탄성치(價格彈性値) 추정에 있어서 사용 가능한 두가지의 가격지수(價格指數), 즉 수입단가(輸入單價)와 수입물가(輸入物價) 중 어느 것을 사용하는 것이 바람직한 것인지를 살펴보고 이중 이론적으로 우월한 지수를 이용하여 수입함수(輸入函數)의 소득(所得) 및 가격탄성치(價格彈性値)를 추정하고자 하였다. 분석으로부터 얻는 중요한 결론(結論)은, 우리나라의 경우 수입함수(輸入函數)의 분석에 있어서 수입단가(輸入單價)보다는 수입물가(輸入物價)를 이용하는 것이 더 적합하리라는 점이다. 이는 또한 우리나라 실질(實質)GNP의 추계에 있어서 현재의 수입단가(輸入單價) 이용방식에서 수입물가(輸入物價) 이용방식으로 편제방법을 바꾸는 것이 바람직하다는 것을 의미한다. 이같은 결론은 이론적, 실증적인 변에서 아래와 같은 네가지 이유에 근거한다. 먼저 이론적인 면에서는 첫째, 수입단가(輸入單價)가 물가지수(物價指數)로서 갖추어야 할 통계적 일관성을 갖추지 못하고 있다는 점을 지적할 수 있다. 즉 수입단가(輸入單價)는 어느 일정 규격조건(規格條件)의 상품가격(商品價格)을 일관성 있게 추적하는 것이 아니므로 잡다한 품질규격의 평균가격(平均價格)으로 나타날 가능성이 높으며 이러한 변에서 가격변화(價格變化)를 정확히 반영하지 못한다. 둘째, 수입단가지수(輸入單價指數)는 가격변화(價格變化)가 전혀 없을 때에도 총수입(總輸入)의 품목별 구성(構成)이 바뀌면 변동하는 속성을 지니고 있어 가격변동(價格變動) 상황(狀況)을 오도할 가능성을 지니고 있다. 다음으로 실증적인 면에서는 첫째, 수입단가(輸入單價)를 이용한 수입함수(輸入函數)에서는 가격변수(價格變數)의 계수(係數)가 이론상 기대되는 것과는 반대되는 부호를 가짐으로써 수입함수(輸入函數))로서의 기본적인 요건을 만족시키지 못하는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 둘째, 단가지수(單價指數)를 이용한 경우 소득(所得)과 상대가격(相對價格)을 회귀변수로 하는 수입함수(輸入函數)에서 장기안정적인 균충관계(均衝關係)가 존재하지 않은 것으로 판명되었다. 반면 수입물가(輸入物價)를 이용한 수입함수(輸入函數)에서는 각 변수의 계수(係數)가 이론적 기대치에 부합하였으며 장기안정적인 균충관계(均衝關係)가 성립하는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 한편 미국에서는 수출입단가지수(輸出入單價指數)의 문제점에 대한 오랜 연구 결과, 1989년부터 단가지수(單價指數)의 편제를 아예 중단하는 조치를 취한 바 있으며, GNP추계에 있어서도 종래의 수출입단가(輸出入單價) 대신 수출입물가(輸出入物價)를 이용하는 방식으로 그 편제방법을 변경한 바 있다.

Incheon's Import Behaviors of the Major Items (인천항 주요품목의 수입행태)

  • This study porvides an empirical overview of the import patterns of Incheon port using an Engle-Granger cointegration technique and Johansen's multivariate cointegraion methodology test to check the stationarity of the model. The empirical results show that the import in Incheon port related to the economic variables. This paper also applies rolling regression to our model, indicating that import are endogeneous to the economic variable.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide an empirical overview of the import patterns of the Eyeglasses and Contactlens industry. Methods: This study used an Engle-Granger cointegration technique and Johansen's multivariate cointegraion methodology test to check the stationarity of the model. This paper also applies Rolling regression to our model, indicating that Eyeglasses and Contact Lens import is endogenous to the economic variable. Results: The empirical results show how the import in Eyeglasses and Contact Lens is related to the economic variables. Conclusions: This paper shows how the import of Eyeglasses and Contactlens is influenced by economic variables, such as exchange rate and industrial product, and seasonal factors.

  • The objectives of this study were to explain market structures of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand. Chile. The demand for imported logs is modeled as a function of output of wood manufacturing in Korea and log prices of competing suppliers. It is hypothesized that the quantity of log impaled in a period is determined by its own and competing prices and the output of wood corresponding manufacturing sector in the current period. Import demand functions of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile were estimated by SURE(Seemingly Unrelated Regression Equations). Elasticities of amounts of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile with respect to price of imported log from U.S.A. were -2.88, 1.36 and 3.17, respectively. Elasticities of amounts of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile with respect to price of imported log from New Zealand were 0.71, -1.65 and 1.44, respectively, Elasticities of amounts of logs imported to Korea from U.S.A., New Zealand and Chile with respect to price of imported log from Chile was -2.88. 1.36 and 3.17.

Measuring the Revenue Efficiency of Korean and Japanese Railways Using a Stochastic Frontier Approach (A Comparison with Their Cost Efficiency (확률적 변경 접근법을 이용한 한국과 일본 철도산업의 수입 효율성 분석 (비용 효율성과의 비교를 중심으로))

  • On the basis of a Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA), this paper analyses revenue efficiencies for the same sample of Korean and Japanese railways in the papers which analyze cost efficiencies using a generalized translog functional form. The paper also compares the results of revenue efficiencies with cost efficiencies and evaluates the effects of managerial autonomy and privatization on the firm-specific efficiencies. The results show that the average estimate of revenue inefficiency is 7.02% when the term of inefficiency is assumed to be distributed as a half-normal and 6.98% as a exponential for the total sample. Also, standardized inefficiencies in revenues (7.5%) are greater than those in costs (2.1%). JR East and JR West are found to be most efficient on the revenue side and on the cost side respectively while JNR and JR Kyushu are worst efficient on the both sides. Finally, the correlations between efficiencies in revenues and costs also between efficiencies and privatization are positively correlated. The results suggest that the most independent companies, with increased managerial autonomy via privatization, are the most efficient in both revenues and costs.

An Estimation of Price Elasticities of Import Demand and Export Supply Functions Derived from an Integrated Production Model (생산모형(生産模型)을 이용(利用)한 수출(輸出)·수입함수(輸入函數)의 가격탄성치(價格彈性値) 추정(推定))

  • Using an aggregator model, we look into the possibilities for substitution between Korea's exports, imports, domestic sales and domestic inputs (particularly labor), and substitution between disaggregated export and import components. Our approach heavily draws on an economy-wide GNP function that is similar to Samuelson's, modeling trade functions as derived from an integrated production system. Under the condition of homotheticity and weak separability, the GNP function would facilitate consistent aggregation that retains certain properties of the production structure. It would also be useful for a two-stage optimization process that enables us to obtain not only the net output price elasticities of the first-level aggregator functions, but also those of the second-level individual components of exports and imports. For the implementation of the model, we apply the Symmetric Generalized McFadden (SGM) function developed by Diewert and Wales to both stages of estimation. The first stage of the estimation procedure is to estimate the unit quantity equations of the second-level exports and imports that comprise four components each. The parameter estimates obtained in the first stage are utilized in the derivation of instrumental variables for the aggregate export and import prices being employed in the upper model. In the second stage, the net output supply equations derived from the GNP function are used in the estimation of the price elasticities of the first-level variables: exports, imports, domestic sales and labor. With these estimates in hand, we can come up with various elasticities of both the net output supply functions and the individual components of exports and imports. At the aggregate level (first-level), exports appear to be substitutable with domestic sales, while labor is complementary with imports. An increase in the price of exports would reduce the amount of the domestic sales supply, and a decrease in the wage rate would boost the demand for imports. On the other hand, labor and imports are complementary with exports and domestic sales in the input-output structure. At the disaggregate level (second-level), the price elasticities of the export and import components obtained indicate that both substitution and complement possibilities exist between them. Although these elasticities are interesting in their own right, they would be more usefully applied as inputs to the computational general equilibrium model.

  • From January 2000 to September 2006, we use the 81 months of the data to estimate the exportation and importation function of the Korea information communications main device industry towards to U.S., and through this process we extract the cost elasticity. And from cost elsticity, we estimate the exportation and importation enlarging effect between Korea and U.S assumption of the exportation and importation reduction rate was givien to MRA contract between Korea and U.S.

Measuring Consumers' Welfare Losses due to Announcement of Resuming US-Beef Imports (미국산 쇠고기 수입재개 발표에 따른 소비자 후생손실 측정)

  • This paper measures welfare losses from beef consumption reduction, which might be resulted from psychological anxiety about potential outbreak of BSE (commonly known as "bad cow dieses") risks after announcement of resuming US-beef imports in April of 2008. Unlike the previous literature of utilizing the contingent valuation method or experimental market approach, this study estimated quality-differentiated consumer demand functions using the information of self-reported beef consumption quantity, individually constructed price indices of beef, and subjective perception of BSE risks. The empirical results based on a survey sample of 360 residents in Jeon Ju city were consistent with the anticipation from economic theory, in terms of coefficients of own prices, substitute prices and income variables. The announcement of resuming US-beef imports did not make significant differences in the sign and sizes of the main economic variables. However, the subjective perception variable about BSE risks had negative significant impacts on beef demand functions after the announcement but not significant before the announcement. The welfare losses in a form of equivalent variation (EV) corresponding to the increases in concerns about BSE risks were measured to be about 30 thousand won per household.

  • We may consider the inducement of demand to public transportation as a solution to relieve traffic congestion and pollution. Subway has merits as moving on schedule, transporting more people than bus. But subway is required a vast investment in the early stage of construction has a huge debt. So it runs into red figures, and on this account, services of subway are falling more and more. Development of subway's operation cost function is useful to understand structure of subway's operation and catch the relations of operation cost and actual results. In addition, we can present the policy that is a helpful to the operation as development of operation cost function. But there are short of studies about operation cost deal with a subway comparison with local train. Because local train has many lines and data, on the other hand, subway has one to four lines and less data. Most of previous studies sought the operation cost function of Seoul. So this study aimed to develop and apply the operation cost function of Seoul, Incheon, Busan and Daegu area using full allocation method. In this study, we considered the number of passengers, track-km, train-km, revenue as actual results. By appling the operation cost function, we compared the average cost of each city and confirmed the existence of economies of scale about the number of passengers, train-km.
