How Small Business Competitive Strategies Affect Business Performance by CEO leadership types (소기업 경쟁전략과 CEO 리더십 유형이 기업성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper investigated the role of CEO leadership in the relationship between Korean small firm's competitive strategy and performance. This study conducted an empirical analysis by collecting data through a questionnaire survey targeting small firms in Korea. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, it was found that the competitive strategies of small firms all had a positive effect on the performance, and it was found that a strategic consistency rather than the type of strategy was positive for firm performance. Second, it was found that the type of leadership of the CEO should also be changed according to the type of strategy. Specifically, it was found that transformational leadership was more appropriate for differentiation strategies, and transactional leadership was more appropriate for cost advantage strategies. This study clarified that the pursuit of a strategic consistency is more important than the type of strategy in the competitive strategy, and that the CEO needs to pursue an appropriate leadership style according to the competitive strategy.

The Impacts of R&D Capabilities of Small Companies on Organizational Competences and R&D Commercializing Performances (소기업의 R&D역량이 조직역량 및 R&D사업화에 미치는 영향)

  • Since R&D (Research and Development) of small companies is becoming more and more important, and government R&D grants are still increasing. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing R&D performance of small companies and necessary capabilities of them. Based on empirical study of 3,636 small companies which participated and completed government R&D grant project, technology innovation capability and technology commercializing capability of small companies are positively related with organizational competences, with moderating effects of entrepreneurship. In addition, their R&D capabilities are not significantly related with R&D commercializing performance directly, but mediated with organizational competences. The results of study suggest implications of measuring the R&D performance of small companies and government support policy with the importance of organizational competences as an intermediate variable of R&D performances.

Do Large Firm Prices lead Small Firm Prices? (기업의 규모와 주가의 선행성에 관한 연구)

  • 완전자본시장에서는 주가에 영향을 비치는 모든 정보가 신속하고 정확하게 주가에 반영될 것이므로 특정 주가나 지수가 다른 주가나 지수를 선행하는 일은 없을 것이다. 그러나 시장이 불완전한 경우 여러 가지 이유에 의해 주가나 지수의 선행성현상이 발생할 수 있다. 기존의 연구에서는 대부분 이러한 선행성의 문제를 기술적인 문제로 취급하고 있으나 Atchison, Butler 와 Simond(1987)가 지적하듯 이러한 선행성현상을 모두 기술적인 이유로 돌리기에는 어려운 점이 많다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 주가나 지수의 선행성문제를 거래비용이라는 경제적 이유로 설명하고자 한다. 대기업의 주식은 거래량이 많고 이에 따라 유동성비용이 낮은 반면 소기업의 주식은 거래량이 적고 유동성비용이 크다. 정보를 가진 투자자에게 유동성의 문제는 큰 의미를 갖는데 그 이유는 정보의 가치는 시간이 지남에 따라 급격히 감소하기 때문이다. 따라서 정보를 가진 투자자는 유동성이 큰 주식을 선호하며 이에 따라 유동성이 큰 대기업 주식에 정보가 더 빨리 반영되어 유동성이 큰 대기업 주식이 유동성이 작은 소기업 주식의 가격을 선행할 것이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 가설을 토대로 자본금의 크기순으로 상위 15%정도의 기업의 대기업으로, 하위 15% 정도의 기업을 소기업으로 간주하여 주가수익률의 선행성검증을 실시한 결과 대기업의 주가수익률이 소기업의 주가수익률을 선행하는 것으로 나타났는데 이러한 현상은 산업별로도 거의 일관적으로 나타났다. 주가수익률의 선행성이 비거래효과에 의해 나타날 수도 있으므로 이리한 효과를 제거하고 검증해 보았는데 그 결과 역시 비거래효과를 제거하기 전과 큰 차이가 없었다.

External Knowledge Search Strategy and Technological Innovation : Small vs Medium Firms (기술혁신을 위한 외부지식 탐색 전략 : 소기업 vs 중기업)

  • In this research, we aim to analyze how different external knowledge search strategies of small and medium enterprises affect technological innovation. In particular, since there has been little comparison between Korean small and medium firms, we investigated the differences of the two groups by employing the "Korean Innovation Survey 2010." As a result, it was found that "external search breadth", which refers to expanding the spectrum of external knowledge search due to lack of resources and capabilities inside small firms, spurred technological innovation. On the other hand, "external search depth", which implies seeking a long-term and close relationship with the subjects that provide outside knowledge for medium firms, catalyzed technological innovation. These results emphasize that we need to separately analyze technological innovation of small and medium firms, which was, in most previous studies, viewed as one group, i.e. SMEs. In addition, the results can be, from the perspective of a firm's growth, interpreted as follows. That is, it is more effective to formulate a "diversity" pursuing strategy in the "small firm" stage where little time has passed since its establishment, whilst it is more useful to apply a "focus" strategy on sophisticated knowledge in the "medium firm" stage where a firm has grown to some extent.

기업간(企業間) 분업(分業)의 효율성(效率性) 증진(增進)과 중견기업(中堅企業)의 역할(役割)

  • 우리나라 제조업(製造業)의 수직적(垂直的) 구조(構造)는 선진공업국에 비하여 소(小) 영세기업(零細企業)의 비중이 월등히 높은 피라미드형의 형태를 보이며 80년대말 이후 소기업군의 확대는 더욱 두드러지고 있다. 이처럼 소기업의 비중이 높아진 것은 제조업체들이 가격경쟁력(價格競爭力)을 높이기 위하여 생산비용이 높게 드는 자체생산(自體生産)을 가능한 한 줄이고 임금(賃金)이 낮은 중소기업으로 생산공정을 이양해 왔기 때문이다. 소기업 비중이 높은 분업구조는 가격경쟁력이 중시되어 생산을 분업화해야 하는 경제체제에서는 높은 효율성(效率性)을 발휘한다고 평가할 수 있다. 90년대에 이르러 중소기업이 저가(低價)의 생산요소(生産要素)를 조달받기 어려운 경제여건이 조성되면서 중소기업의 경영불안이 높아지는 등 가격경쟁력을 유지하기 위한 생산분업체제(生産分業體制)는 한계(限界)에 도달한 것으로 보인다. 따라서 대기업과 중소기업간 분업도 기술(技術) 중심의 분업관계(分業關係)로 전환되어야 할 단계에 이르렀다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 종전과 같이 소기업(小企業)에 의존하는 분업구조(分業構造)로는 기술분업(技術分業)이 정착되기 어렵다. 왜냐하면 연구개발, 전문인력의 고용 등 기술개발과 관련된 기업활동에는 생산량에 관계없이 고정비용(固定費用)이 들어서 기술개발 비용과 위험을 분산시키려면 기업의 생산규모가 상당히 커져야 하기 때문이다. 이는 소기업 중심의 분업구조가 중견기업(中堅企業)중심의 구조로 개편(改編)되어야 함을 의미한다. 중견기업이 육성되려면 첫째, 대기업과 직거래하는 중소업체(中小業體)의 수(數)가 축소되어야 한다. 거래업체수의 과다는 기업규모를 영세하게 만드는 가장 직접적 요인이기 때문이다. 그러나 거래업체의 정리과정에서 기존업체들이 중소기업 보호여론을 등에 업고 반발할 수 있고, 대기업이 교섭력을 강화하기 위한 수단으로 악용할 수 있으므로 객관적이고 투명한 정리기준의 제시가 전제되어야 한다. 둘째, 대기업의 중소기업에 대한 대폭적 자본참여(資本參與)가 허용되어야 한다. 대기업의 자본참여는 중소기업 지배를 강화할 것으로 우려되어 현재는 극히 부분적으로 허용하고 있으나, 개방경제하에서는 대기업과 국내 중소기업간의 협력관계를 유지시키는 효과적 수단으로 작용하게 될 것이다. 셋째, 은행 등 금융자본(金融資本)의 중견기업에 대한 투자(投資) 활성화(活性化)가 필요하다. 금융자율화로 금융기관의 수익성이 강조되는 상태에서 금융자본이 거래업체의 주주(株主)로서 참여하면 경영정보를 손쉽게 파악할 수 있어 우량업체의 신속한 육성이 가능해질 수 있다.

  • Minor enterprises can successfully build up their market share plans in a relatively shorter time than compared with major enterprises, which require long time for design developments in their big organization. Therefore, there are some items that are more suitable to the minor enterprises. For example, computer desk may be the one. It must be one of the strategically suitable items of minor enterprises rather than of large enterprises because of their own easy production policies. This paper is based on a research report that I submitted to Gyongsan-Si, Gyongbuk-Do which supported a small company for a special purpose of its provincial economic policy. I took part in the research and suggested five types of characteristic concepts and the ideas. And as a result. the type war accepted as the most appropriate one of them to produce. And the acception was based on the following five factors; consumer's need, productivity, proper price, energy saving, and user' easiness.

  • ASP service that is emerging as a new form of application outsourcing has the advantage of lower cost and risk. Therefore, ASP service may be attractive for small firms and even some new companies. However, studies about ASP service are rare in academic and professional journals, and most of the articles about outsourcing were considering mainly large enterprises. The purpose of this article is to analyze the effects of the some context variables of Korean small businesses on ASP service usage pattern, and the effect of ASP service usage pattern on user satisfaction and firm performance. The analysis results show that firm size has a positive impact on IT need of small businesses, and IT need of small businesses have a positive impact on training period and past usage period. Also, firm size, IT need, training period has an positive impact on ASP service usage pattern. However, ASP service usage period has no relationship on ASP service usage pattern. Finally, ASP service usage pattern has a positive impact on firm performance and user satisfaction, and user satisfaction has an impact on firm performance.

A Study on the Effects of the Internal Competence of Small Business on Competitive Advantage and Startup Intention to Commercialize a Franchise: Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Franchise Suitability (소기업의 내부역량이 경쟁우위 및 프랜차이즈 사업화 의도에 미치는 영향: 프랜차이즈 적합성의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of internal competence of small business on the competitive advantage and start-up intention. Through this, which key competence of small business can be proposed for market growth against of large companies that have a great capital power. Also, implications for development direction can be suggested. For this purpose, technology capability, financing capability, marketing capability, and product/service differentiation capability factors were set as independent variables, as well as competitive advantage as a mediating factor, and startup intention to be franchiser as a dependent variable. For the analysis, a structured questionnaires survey was conducted to 276 domestic small business in capital area. The main results are as follows. First, in relation to the internal competency and the competitive advantage of small businesses, it was found that technological capabilities, financing capabilities and product (service) differentiation have a positive effect on competitive advantage. Second, the relationship between the internal capacity of a small entity and startup intention to commercialize a franchiser business indicates that its financing capacity and marketing capabilities have a positive effect on startup intention to commercialize the business, and that competitive advantage has a significant effect on startup intention to commercialize the franchise. Third, competitive advantage was found to mediate the relationship between internal competency and startup intention. Finally, it was shown that the internal capacity of a small business has a regulating effect in relation to its financing capacity, marketing capabilities and startup intention to commercialize the franchise, and that it also had a regulating effect in relation to its relationship with its competitive advantage and franchise suitability. Based on the above results, if small business can take competitive advantage in the market, they also consider startup intention to commercialize a franchiser, in addition, it is expected that one suggestion can be made from an internal capacity perspective required more emphasis on operations and management as an alternative to expanding small businesses' business, including market access measures that can be linked to internal capacity factors of small businesses.

  • This study examined the success factor of small business CEOs for continuous growth and development of business, and found it competencies of CEOs, and empirically studied the relationship between this factor and business performance. This study also focused on mediating effect of networking activity between competencies of small business CEOs and business performance. As a result of the study, it turned out that leadership competence, external cooperation competence and marketing competence have a significant effects on business performance. Small business CEOs' own efforts for increasing leadership, cooperation and marketing capability are needed as well as government policy and assistance in order to improve business performance. It also tested the mediating effect of networking activity to get information and resources, and proved it plays a role in enhancing business performance, so that it is necessary to promote small business CEOs' access to information and resources. Based on these empirical tests, government and supporting organizations need to refer to that factors affecting business performance are in priority supported in small business policy.
