Quantification of rock deformation using wavy extinction of quartz grain (석영의 파동소광 강도를 이용한 암석 변형의 정량화)

  • The wavy extinction of quartz grains can be used as a good indicator to show the degree of rock deformation. To determine degree of the rock deformation, intensity of wavy extinction (IWE) of quartz grains was measured by using polarizing microscope, digital camera, and NIH image (or Scion Image). In this experiment, the measurement was performed along the line perpendicular to the subgrain boundary of wavy extinction. IWE was measured when a quartz grain shows maximum extinction in polarizing microscope. NIH image was represented in terms of 256 gray-scale brightness, which was associated with intensity of the wavy extinction. IWE was determined by the degree of brightness versus the measuring length of a quartz grain. IWE was analysed in the distribution chart with the collection unit of 5. Regarding the characteristics of data distribution, the median between the mode and the median of the histogram is defined as a representative value for the IWE, and this value is subdivided into the five levels of rock deformation zones (lowest- or non-, low-, medium-, high-, and highest deformation) with their respective indices (D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5). The correlation between the Eonyang Granite and the Yangsan Fault was investigated by using the indices. The results indicate that IWE values decreased away from the fault.

  • Despite of the same species there is a difference in the tree shape and its wood property due to quantitatiVe and qualitatiVe differences in wood cells by the intra-annual cambial actiVity. The purpose of this study was to proVide the fundamental database of intra-annual cambial seasonal actiVity for red pine in Sokwang-ri and Anmyondo for the determination of their wood qualities. As the results of intra-annual cambial actiVity, the initiation of cambial actiVity of red pine in the plots with Age Class V in Sokwang-ri was in the middle of April and it was at the beginning of April in all plots in Anmyondo. Only the plots with Age Class IX in Sokwang-ri showed relatiVely late initiation of cambial actiVity as between middle of May and middle of June. Except one plot with Age Class IX in Sokwang-ri all plots in both sites showed the same cessation of cambial actiVity as between middle and end of October. According to intra-annual cambial actiVity, the duration of cambial actiVity in Sokwang-ri is shorter than that of Anmyondo. On the other hand, the number of cell diVision of cambial actiVity in Sokwang-ri was more than those of Anmyondo. We could establish the database for intra-annual cambial actiVity for Sokwang-ri and Anmyondo to estimate their wood quality.

  • By using the discrete-dipole approximation, we computed the extinction spectrum of a gold-silver alloy nanoparticle. We have examined how the surface plasmon resonance changes with respect to the variation in the composition of the alloy particle. As the fraction of silver increases for a 10nm particle, the peak position of the extinction spectrum blue-shifts linearly. The intensity of the peak however increases exponentially with increasing the silver fraction. These results are in accord with the previous experimental results.

  • The wavy extinction of quartz can be used as a standard indicator showing the degree of rock deformation. To determine the degree of rock deformation, the intensity of wavy extinction (IWE) of quartz was measured using petroggraphic microscope, digital camera, and NIH image. In this study, this method was applied to the Cheongsan porphyritic granite, Cheongsan two mica granite, and Baekrok granite to investigate the deformation intensity of Cheongsan area. NIH Image data show a high-grade deformation in the vicinity of the strike-slip fault (between Cheongsan granite and Baekrok granite) and the unconformity (between Cheongsan granite and Youngdong basin). Thus, the main deformation in these areas is most likely to be concentrated on the faults that generate Yeongdong basin and the strike slip faults between Cheongsan granite and Baekrok granite.

Determination of the complex refractive index and thickness of MNA/PMMA thin film (MNA/PMMA 고분자박막의 복소굴절율 및 두께결정)

  • The thickness and the spectrum of the complex refractive index in the region 1.5~4.5 eV, of an MNA/PMMA thin film fabricated by spin casting are determined. The film thickness and the refractive index in its transparent region is calculated by modeling the spectroscopic ellipsometry data. The extinction coefficient spectrum is obtained from the absorption spectrum in its non-transparent region. The best fit oscillator parameters of the classical Lorentz oscillator and a quantum mechanical oscillator are found. The complex refractive index spectrum by these oscillators are compared. The present technique can be applied to get the thickness and the complex refractive index of unknown polymer films and thus it will be useful in optical characterization of those films.

  • A two-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with a band pass filter is used to get optical pulses of high peak value. The pulse signal has a 32 ㏈ extinction ratio, 125 W peak power and 79 ㎽ pulse off power. A nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is used to lower the pulse off power so as to increase the extinction ratio. The pulse signal after the NOLM has a 50.4 ㏈ extinction ratio, 35 W peak power and 0.3 ㎽ pulse off power.

Quantification of Granite Deformation of Pocheon-Gisanri Area Using Wavy Extinction of Quartz Grain (석영의 파동소광을 이용한 포천-기산리 일대의 화강암 변형의 정량화)

  • The wavy extinction of quartz can be used as a standard indicator showing the degree of rock deformation. In determine the degree of rock deformation, the intensity of wavy extinction (IWE) of quartz was measured using polarizing microscope, digital camera, and NIH Image program. This method was applied to the granite of Pocheon-Gisanri area, which are divided three type; biotite granite (Gb), garnet biotite granite (Ggb) and two mica granite (Gtm). In this study, measurement of wavy extinction was proceeded Ggb in eastern part and Gb in western part based on the Pocheoneup. The result was that Gb shows low deformation degree below D2, and Ggb represents high deformation degree above D3, generally showing that increasing deformation degree from northwest to southeast in the studied area. It is suggested that the fault which penetrated Ggb in 1/250,000 geological map affected the deformation degree of Ggb.

Optimal Parameter Values of Optical Phase Conjugator depending on Extinction Ratio of WDM Channel Signals (WDM 채널 신호의 소광비에 따른 광 위상 공액기의 최적 파라미터 값)

  • In this paper, the optimal values of optical phase conjugator (OPC) position and dispersion coefficients of fiber sections depending on the extinction ratio of WDM channel signals are numerically induced in WDM system with OPC used to compensate the distorted signals due to nonlinearities and chromatic dispersion. The considered WDM system consist of 16 channels with 40 Gbps data rate and each channel is assumed to be NRZ format with the extinction ration of 5 dB, 10 dB, or 20 dB. It is confirmed that the only one parameter among two considered parameters is used to effectively compensate overall WDM channels, and each optimal value of these parameters independent on the extinction ratio. That is, overall WDM channels are excellently transmitted within 2 dB power penalty whether by positioning OPC into 496 km or by setting dispersion coefficient difference between two fiber sections to 0.055 ps/nm/km, these optimal values are not dependence on the extinction ratio.

  • Non-LTE 항성대기모형인 Tlusty 모형의 합성색지수와 성간소광을 매우 적게 받은 산개성단에 있는 별들의 색지수를 바탕으로 O와 B형 별의 고유색지수 관계를 채택하였다. 태양인근 3kpc 내에 있는 약 190개 젊은 산개성단의 가시광 및 근적외선 2MASS JHKs 관측자료와 위에서 채택한 고유 색지수 관계를 적용하여 색 초과비 E(V-I)/E(B-V), E(V-J)/E(B-V), E(V-H)/E(B-V), 및 E(V-Ks)/E(B-V)를 얻고, 색 초과비와 $R_V$의 관계를 사용하여, 각 성단의 성간소광법칙 $R_V$를 결정하였다. 국부 나선팔의 백조자리 방향과 Per 나선팔에 있는 산개성단들은 약간 작은 $R_V$를 보이며, 큰개자리 방향의 국부 나선팔에 있는 산개성단은 정상적인$R_V$를, 그리고 Sgr-Car 나선팔에 있는 산개성단들은 약간 큰 값을 보였다. 이 결과는 최대 편광도를 보이는 파장과 $R_V$의 관계로 얻을 수 있는 양상과 잘 일치한다.

  • 가입자 지역의 데이터 통신 용량의 증가로 기존 국간에서 병목현상을 피하기 위해 도입된 파장분할다중화(WDM) 기술이 도심(Metro) 지역에도 적용되고 있다. 100km 미만의 단거리 지역은 경제성을 고려할 때 장거리 전송에 사용되는 외부변조 방식보다는 저가로 구현이 가능한 직접변조 방식의 송신기가 주로 사용되고 있다. 반도체 레이저를 이용한 직접변조 방식을 채택한 시스템에 있어 소광비와 처핑은 시스템의 전송성능을 결정하는 중요한 요소이다. (중략)
