An Analysis for Gender Stereotypes of Illustrations in Middle School Science Paper Textbooks and Digital Textbooks Developed under the 2015 Revised National Curriculum (2015 개정 교육과정에 따른 중학교 과학 서책형 교과서와 디지털 교과서의 삽화에 나타난 성역할 고정관념 분석)

  • This study analyzed illustrations presented in middle school science 14 paper textbooks and 14 digital textbooks under the 2015 revised curriculum in terms of gender stereotypes. In both paper and digital textbooks, the most common type of illustration was multiple pupils. For pupils, the frequency of gender was balanced in both paper and digital textbooks. However, there were differences among publishers in digital textbooks. In both paper and digital textbooks, girls showed a higher frequency than boys in learning activities. However, the opposite tendency was observed in non-learning activities. In particular, non-learning activities of digital textbooks showed gender imbalance among all publishers. In both paper and digital textbooks, behavioral characteristics were mostly described to be active without gender differences. But, there were differences among publishers in digital textbooks. For adults, men showed a higher frequency than women in both paper and digital textbooks. Gender frequency was balanced in family activities, however, men showed a higher frequency in social activities. Unlike paper textbooks, digital textbooks were gender balanced in occupational activities. In both paper and digital textbooks, the number of occupations in which men appeared more frequently was higher than that in which women appeared more frequently. Especially, men showed a higher frequency than women in both scientist and researcher. Behavioral characteristics were mostly biased in terms of gender in both paper and digital textbooks.

A comparison of the Features of External Representations Presented in Paper Textbooks and Digital Textbooks: Focused on the 'Force' Related Units of Middle School in the 2009 and 2015 National Science Curricula (서책형교과서와 디지털교과서에 제시된 외적 표상의 특징 비교: 2009 및 2015 개정 교육과정의 중학교 '힘' 관련 단원을 중심으로)

  • Digital textbooks will be an important media for expanding learning materials and ways of communicating in the classroom in a 'hyper-connected society'. The purpose of this study is to compare the types and features of external representations presented in paper textbooks and digital textbooks to see how they were constructed meaningful in a different way. In particular, through comparison of digital textbooks that were approved by the 2009 and 2015 national science curricula, this study intended to diagnose large or small changes depending on the curriculum and seek directions for future developments. As a result, digital textbooks provided quantitative extended data and representations in space beyond physical limits, but these representations were focused on linguistic representations. This tendency was the same in both curricula textbooks, but more diverse types of representations were found in the 2015 national science curriculum. In addition, in th1 digital textbooks, illustrative and explanatory representations was used the most, such as the paper textbooks. However, in the digital textbooks, complementary representations were much bigger than the paper textbooks and summative and performative representations were added. In the digital textbooks of the 2015 national science curriculum, the complementary representations were slightly reduced, and summative and performative representations were relatively more used. Also, in the digital textbooks, space was used as a way of presenting various representations through the pop-up and screen switching functions by click. In particular, in the 2015 national science curriculum, many screen switching functions were presented. Finally, this study suggested implications for the improvement of digital textbooks and science classroom.

Effects of Game-Based-Digital Textbook on the Basic Arithmetic Abilities and the Task Attention of Students with Mental Retardation (게임기반 디지털 교과서 활용이 정신지체 학생의 기초연산 수행능력 및 과제집중에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of game-based-digital textbook on the basic arithmetic abilities and the task attention of students with mental retardation. To do this, 38 students with mental retardation participated and were assigned to the three groups. The first group only used the traditional text book, the second group only used the game-based-digital textbook, and the third group used both the traditional textbook and the game-based-digital textbook. The third group using both the traditional textbook and the game-based-digital textbook revealed more higher improvement than the other two groups in the basic arithmetic and the task attention.

  • In this paper, we research into an effective operation environment of digital textbook according to the adaption of an electronic textbook and analyze the approval program and the authorization program of the paper textbook for the efficient utility of a digital textbook. We propose various criterions and methods of the approval and authorization program. Finally, we show the whole process of the proposed approval and authorization program. We hope that our study apply to the standard approval and authorization program of the Ministry of Education.

Improving the Functions of Digital Textbooks to Prepare for the post COVID-19 (포스트 코로나를 대비한 디지털교과서의 기능 개선)

  • In the COVID-19 situation, digital textbooks have been used in many schools. In order for digital textbooks to become active even in the post COVID-19 era, the functions of digital textbooks must be improved. Digital textbooks are traditional book-type textbooks with glossaries, video materials, and evaluation questions added. Recently, they are being used usefully for practical education by providing realistic contents such as Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and 360 images. Therefore, in this study, in order to prepare for the post COVID-19, we found the functional problems of digital textbooks and suggested a way to improve them. First, the layout of digital textbooks should be developed as a responsive layout, deviating from the same form as a book-type textbook. Second, digital textbooks and learning management systems must be integrated. Third, by developing a digital textbook for teachers, teachers should be able to directly reorganize the contents or add external materials. Fourth, learning analysis should be possible using data recorded in digital textbooks. Fifth, in the 2022 revised curriculum, various subjects should be developed as digital textbooks.

  • 학습자는 교수 학습 상황에서 대부분 배운 내용을 잉킹을 통해 정리한다. 교수자와 학습자 사이에서 잉킹을 통한 상호작용은 매우 중요하며 이와 관련된 다양한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 디지털교과서가 점점 보급되고 있는 상황에서 서책형교과서와 디지털교과서가 공존하는 현재의 과도기적인 교육환경은 일반적인 잉킹과 디지털 잉킹이 공유하고 있다. 이에 디지털 교과서를 활용한 협력적인 학습상황에서 과제를 제시한 후, 일반적인 잉킹과 디지털 잉킹을 학생들에게 그룹별로 각각 적용하도록 환경을 구성하였다. 본 논문에서는 일반적인 잉킹환경과 디지털 잉킹환경이라는 두가지 잉킹 방식을 적용한 후에 학생의 태도 및 판단, 문제 해결의 정확성, 학생의 선호도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다.

Development and Effects of Instruction Model for Using Digital Textbook in Elementary Science Classes (초등 과학 수업에서 디지털 교과서 활용 수업모형 개발 및 효과)

  • Digital textbooks enable learning that is appropriate to the characteristics and level of learners through various interactions. The purpose of this study was to develop an instruction model that can more effectively use digital textbooks in elementary science classes and to verify its effectiveness. The results were as follows. The instruction model for helping learners complete their learning by using digital textbooks needs to receive diagnostic assessment and feedback on entry behavior, to build a self-directed learning environment, and to interact with teachers, students, and digital textbooks as scaffolding. In this study, we developed an instruction model using digital textbooks reflecting these characteristic. The instructional model consists of preparation, practice and solidity step. In the preparation step, the learner performs a diagnostic evaluation using digital textbooks. Based on the results, feedback provided at each level can complement the entry behavior and maintain interest in learning activities. In the practice step, self-directed learning is implemented using diverse functions of digital textbooks and various types of data. In the solidity step, learners can internalize the learning contents by reviewing video clips which are provided by teachers, performing problem-solving activities, and accessing outcomes accumulated by learners in the community online. In order to verify the effectiveness of this model, we selected the "Weather and our Life" unit. This experiment was conducted using 101 students in the 5th grade in B Elementary School in Gwangju Metropolitan City. In the experimental group, 50 students learned using a smart device that embodies digital textbooks applied with the instruction model. In the comparative group, 51 students were taught using the paper textbooks. The results were as follows. First, there was a significant effect on the improvement of the learning achievement in the experimental group with low academic ability compared with the comparative group with low academic ability. Second, there was a significant effect on self-directed learning attitude in the experimental group. Third, in the experimental group, the number of interactions with the learner, teacher, and digital textbook was higher than the comparative group. In conclusion, the digital textbooks based on the instruction model in elementary science classes developed in this study helped to improve learners' learning achievement and self-directed learning attitudes.

Design of Digital Textbook Functions Based on the PATROL Instructional Model (PATROL 교수학습모형 기반의 디지털교과서 기능 설계)

  • The PATROL instructional model only uses digital textbooks. PATROL is an acronym for Planning, Action, Tracking, Recommending, Ordering, and Leading. Teachers have a difficult time using current digital textbooks to determine how much time students spend using course materials. This is because current digital textbooks can only show the content of paper textbooks and display additional multimedia materials. In this study, digital textbook functions were designed based on the PATROL model in order to analyze students' learning situations, diagnose problems, and offer solutions. Digital textbook are based on learning analytics named SEE-PAD. SEE-PAD is composed of the following: Social network analysis; Evaluation and assEssment analysis; Predictive analysis; Adaptive learning analysis; and the analysis Dashboard. I drew and showed the use case and sequence diagrams of SEE-PAD to help design digital textbook functions.
