We surveyed physico-chemical properties of bottom water and sediment to evaluate the influence of sediment on the eutrophication in the downstream of Nagdong River from 1998 to 2000. From May to August, DO concentration of bottom waters dropped below 5 mg $O_2/l$ and $NH_4\;^+$ and $PO_4\;^{3-}$ concentrations significantly increased in the bottom waters, resulting in the great differences between surface and bottom waters. Fluxes across water-sediment interface would be substantially active in this period. The serial orders of the water fertility or eutrophication were Joman River > Sonagdong River > Nagdong River. The organic nutrient contents of sediment increased toward the lower parts of the river system. Organic contents of the sediment would be under the influence of water pollution and exhibited a negative correlation with sediment bulk-density or particle size. The concentrations of exchangeable inorganic nutrients of sediment were greater than those of pore waters, and $PO_4\;^{3-}$, $NH_4\;^+$ and $SiO_2$ increased along the sediment depth. $PO_4\;^{3-}$ and $NO_3\;^-$ concentrations of the pore water were less than the overlying waters, while NH4+ and $SiO_2$ concentrations showed opposite trends. Exchangeable nutrients of sediment could be the repository for t]me nutrient exchange in the water-sediment interface.
Harmful air pollutants are exhausted from the various industrial facilities including the coal-fired thermal power plants and these substances affects on the human health as well as the nature environment. In particular, nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) are known to be causative substances to form fine particles ($PM_{2.5}$), which are also deleterious to human health. The integrated system composed of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) have been widely applied in order to control $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ emissions, resulting in high investment and operational costs, maintenance problems, and technical limitations. Recently, new technologies for the simultaneous removal of $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ from the flue gas, such as absorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), non-thermal plasma (NTP), and electron beam (EB), are investigated in order to replace current integrated systems. The proposed technologies are based on the oxidation of $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ to $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$ by using strong aqueous oxidants or oxidative radicals, the absorption of $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$ into water at the gas-liquid interface, and the neutralization with additive reagents. In this paper, we summarize the technical improvements of each simultaneous abatement processes and the future prospect of technologies for demonstrating large-scaled applications.

This study was conducted to investigate the benthic condition around Busan Port by analysing spatio-temporal distribution pattern of polychaete community and some benthic environmental factors. Field survey was seasonally carried out at 15 stations covering in and outside of Busan Port from February to December, 2007. Water temperature, salinity and the type of surface sediment showed little changes among the stations, but factors related to organic enrichment such as TOC, AVS, coprostanol showed an obvious contrast, especially between in and outside of Busan Port. A total of96 species occurred and mean density was 1,814 ind./$m^2$. Species richness was higher at outer port than inner port, but density was higher at inner port. Dominant species were Aphelochaeta monilaris, Magelona japonica, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, etc. and many of them were typical species of organically enriched area. From the multivariate analyses, the whole study area was composed of two distinct polychaete communities located at the inside and outside of the port, and seasonal changes didn't have any influential effects on the structure. Coprostanol and AVS, indicators of organically enriched condition, well explained the community structures of polychaete worms in the vicinity of Busan Port. In this context, the innermost area of North Harbor was in a highly enriched state.
Saussurea chabyoungsanica was recorded in new species by Lim Hyoung Tak in 1997. In order to understand the entity of new species, we investigated the new distribution sites, vegetation structure and soil environmental factors. Additionally discovered distribution sites of S. chabyoungsanica were Manduckbong, Mt. Sukbyoung, Mt. Duckhang, and Sukgaejae, which were located on ridge of the Taebaek mountains. Those sites are typical limestone zones of Korea and among them Sukgaejae belongs to lower great limestone area and Manduckbong, Mt. Sukbyoung and Mt. Duckhang belong to uper great limestone area. According to the result of phytosociological study, plant communities of S. chabyoungsanica were classified by 1 Community group, 4 Communities and 2 Subcommunities; Carex humilis var. nana - Saussurea chabyoungsanica Community group in wide sense Quercus mongolica Community group, Lespedeza maximowiczii- Saussurea chabyoungsanica Community, Galium kinuta - Saussurea chabyongsanica Community, Saliva chanryonica - Saussurea chabyoungsanica Community, Zabelia coreana - Saussurea chabyoungsanica Community. Environmental factor analysis of habitat showed that the distribution site of S. chabyoungsanica was ridge of North aspect and displayed pH 7∼8 typical of limestone. Soil moisture content was high, whereas organic matter content was low. Considering its high occurrence in sites of 1∼10cm in soil depth, and of 30∼45% in relative light intensity, major distribution sites were outcrops and boundaries between shrubland and forest. After community division by vegetation structure in habitat of S. chabyoungsanica, we investigated characters of soil environment by community. As a result of PCA analysis of soil sample by community, it was possible to divide community by characters of soil environmental factor. The cumulative value of contribution rate represented in second dimension space was 73% and the major factors for that value were soil texture, organic matter content and field capacity.
This study evaluated the close crop recycling method by using the extract from defective onions. The mixture of the diluted extract (1/500) and nutrients was applied seven times on the onion leaves without spilling it onto the field. The yield and quality of the onions produced by this method (recycle) were compared to those grown organically (control) and conventionally (normal). The yield from the recycling field was increased significantly by 9% compared to that of the control field, while it was decreased by 11% compared to the normal field (p < 0.05). This lower yield was explained by the differences of the mulching vinyl and the fertilizers between the treatments which effect the onion growth during the winter. The content of quercetin in the onions from the recycling filed was increased significantly by 34% and 44% compared to those of the control and normal field, respectively (p < 0.05). It seemed that minerals and biologically active substances in the defective onion extract were effective in increasing the onion growth. In terms of soil microbial biomass, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was increased significantly in the recycle field by 40.1% and 30.6% compared to those of the control and normal fields, respectively (p < 0.05). On the other hand, microbial stress (cy19:0/18:1w7c) was decreased in the recycle field by 21.0% and 14.1% compared to those of the control and normal fields, respectively.

Human intestinal microbiota play an important role in the regulation of the host's metabolism. There is a close pathological and physiological interaction between dysbiosis of the intestinal microflora and obesity and metabolic syndrome. Akkermansia muciniphila, which was recently isolated from human feces, accounts for about 1-4% of the intestinal microbiota population. The use of A. muciniphila- derived external membrane protein Amuc_1100 and extracellular vesicles (EVs) could be a new strategy for the treatment of obesity. A. muciniphila is considered a next-generation probiotic (NGP) for the treatment of metabolic disorders, such as obesity. Faecalibacterium prausnitzii accounts for about 5% of the intestinal microbiota population in healthy adults and is an indicator of gut health. F. prausnitzii is a butyrate-producing bacterium, with anti-inflammatory effects, and is considered an NGP for the treatment of immune diseases and diabetes. Postbiotics are complex mixtures of metabolites contained in the cell supernatant secreted by probiotics. Parabiotics are microbial cells in which probiotics are inactivated. Paraprobiotics and postbiotics have many advantages over probiotics, such as clear chemical structures, safe dose parameters, and a long shelf life. Thus, they have the potential to replace probiotics. The most natural strategy to restore the imbalance of the intestinal ecosystem normally is to use NGPs among commensal bacteria in the gut. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new foods or drugs such as parabiotics and postbiotics using NGPs.

Concrete prevents corrosion of reinforcing bars due to its strong alkalinity. However, in the sea, strong alkali components with a pH of 12 to 13 are eluted, which adversely affects the ecological environment and growth of marine organisms. In this study, the mechanical properties and durability of the low alkali mortar were evaluated for the development of a low alkali mortar for the 3D printed artificial reefs. As a result of evaluation of strength characteristics, the α-35 mixture, which were produced with fly ash, silica fume and α-hemihydrate gypsum, satisfied the strength requirement 27 MPa in terms of compressive strength. As a result of pH measurement, it was found that mixing with alpha-type hemihydrate gypsum resulted in minimizing pH due to the the formation of calcium sulfate instead of calcium hydroxide production. As a result of the chloride ion penetration resistance test, the α-35 mixture exhibited the best performance, 3844C. As a result of measuring the length change over time, the α-35 mixture showed the shrinkage 33.5% less compared to the Plain mix.
This study was conducted to identify the vegetation structure of the Abies nephrolepis forests by analyzing species composition in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongok in the Gangwon region with the phytosociological method. In order to perform a field investigation, 18 survey areas with an area of about 400 m2 were set up for the stands where A. nephrolepis grow wild. Communities were classified through TWINSPAN and visualized using DCA (Detrended Correspondence Analysis). Species diversity analysis, importance value analysis, and DBH class analysis were employed to identify the characteristics of each community. As a result, the A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongok have been classified into 4 communities; GroupI, II, III and IV. GroupIis Quercus mongolica-A. nephrolepis competitive forest dominated by Q. mongolica and A. nephrolepis in the order. Group II is A. nephrolepis-Betula ermanii competitive forest dominated by A. nephrolepis, Sorbus commixta, and B. ermanii in the order. Group III is dominated by A. nephrolepis, but is expected to have competition between A. nephrolepis and Q. mongolica in the future due to the mass occurrence of Q. mongolica saplings. A. nephrolepis, S. commixta, and Q. mongolica are the dominant species in Group IV, and A. nephrolepis is the major dominant species in all layers. The species diversity of the A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongok is lower than other A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Seorak, Maruguem, and Mt. Odae. It is necessary to establish conservation measures and to continuously monitor the A. nephrolepis forests in Mt. Doota and Mt. Cheongokis due to the harsh environment and the competition that may occur between A. nephrolepis and deciduous trees such as Q. mongolica in the future.

The ocean heatwave is emerging as a major issue due to global warming, posing a direct threat to marine ecosystems and humanity through decreased food resources and reduced carbon absorption capacity of the oceans. Consequently, the prediction of ocean heatwaves in the vicinity of the Korean Peninsula is becoming increasingly important for marine environmental monitoring and management. In this study, an LSTM model was developed to improve the underestimated prediction of ocean heatwaves caused by the coarse vertical grid system of the Korean Peninsula Ocean Prediction System. Based on the results of ocean heatwave predictions for the Korean Peninsula conducted in 2023, as well as those generated by the LSTM model, the performance of heatwave predictions in the East Sea, Yellow Sea, and South Sea areas surrounding the Korean Peninsula was evaluated. The LSTM model developed in this study significantly improved the prediction performance of sea surface temperatures during periods of temperature increase in all three regions. However, its effectiveness in improving prediction performance during periods of temperature decrease or before temperature rise initiation was limited. This demonstrates the potential of the LSTM model to address the underestimated prediction of ocean heatwaves caused by the coarse vertical grid system during periods of enhanced stratification. It is anticipated that the utility of data-driven artificial intelligence models will expand in the future to improve the prediction performance of dynamical models or even replace them.

In an academic ecosystem evolving into open science, open peer review is gaining attention as a way to enhance transparency and openness in scholarly communication. This study examines the adoption of open peer review components in 118 open access journals that have implemented open peer review, and their characteristics by publisher type, country/continent, language, and discipline. Open peer review has been implemented in a variety of ways, including making review reports or pre-prints publicly available or disclosing the identities of authors and reviewers to each other. We also found differences in the components adopted across disciplines. It appears that commercial publishers, which account for a large proportion of publisher types, have generally adopted it, and it is mainly published in English in European countries. By discipline, we find more open peer review in the medical and natural sciences, which traditionally aim for open scholarly communication and fewer journals in the multidisciplinary and humanities. This provides insights into the adoption of open peer review by journals, as well as a better understanding of the characteristics of the academic community in terms of their adoption of open peer review.
