Antibiotics is one of the emerging pollutants found in various water sources as well as wastewater due to its excessive use. Different techniques are available for treating antibiotics contaminants in water such as advanced oxidation process and biological treatment etc. These two processes are ineffective, and the generation of side products makes this process more complicated. Membrane technology is another alternative for the removal of contaminants. To improve the removal of antibiotics and their resistant gene, membrane bioreactors are modified with NaClO and carbon materials. The generation of abundant reactive species is active against the antibiotic's resistant genes.

Nitrogen compounds are one of the major pollutants which cause eutrophication problems of the river or lake and red tides problems of the ocean. Currently available technologies for the removal of nitrogen compounds are mostly biological treatment. However, biological treatment is only effective for the wastewater which contains low concentration of nitrogen compounds. Leachate from solid waste landfill or industrial wastewater which contains high concentration of nitrogen can not be effectively treated by most of the currently available biological treatment technologies. With this connection. the objective of this study is to examine the applicability of ammonia stripping technology for the removal of high concentration of ammonia nitrogen compounds of the leachate from solid waste landfill. It can be concluded that ammonia stripping technology which was placed before the biological treatment process was very effective for the removal of high concentration of ammonium compounds. The chemical cost for the ammonia stripping was 16 percent higher than MLE process, so other methods like sludge recycling are needed for the reduction of operation cost. Further details are discussed in this paper.

An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the potential of flotation process for the secondary clarifier of an activated sludge process. Flotation techniques, applied in this study, include electrofloation (EF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $35{\mu}m$ in average and diffuser flotation (DF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $55{\mu}m$ in average. The batch experiments were done with activated sludge displaying various characteristics. It was shown that the efficiency of solids/liquid separation was reduced as the diluted sludge volume index ($DSVI_{30}$) of activated sludge increased. The dependency, however, gradually decreased as the gas to solids (G/S) ratio increased. Thickening efficiency of EF was more than 2~10 times and DF process was more than 1.5~5 times as compared with gravity sedimentation (GS). Stable sludge blanket was maintained regardless of sludge settleability when the G/S ratio was 0.019 in the EF. On the other hand, Serious deterioration in the sludge blanket was observed in the DF depends on G/S ratio and sludge settleability. And For EF and DF, the suspended solids concentration of effluent was not nearly influenced on settleability of activated sludge and more clear than GS. A biological nutrient removal (BNR) process, combined with EF as a secondary clarifier was operated for three months. The mean MLSS (mixed liquid suspended solids) concentration in the reactor and mean solids concentration of return sludge were estimated to be 5,340 mg/L and 16,770 mg/L, respectively. The water quality of effluent was considerably stable and low value was accomplished, that was, standard suspended solids concentration $0.07{\pm}0.51mg/L$ and standard turbidity $1.44{\pm}0.56NTU$. The EF could be applicable for enhancement of efficiency of activated sludge system as well as improvement of the water quality of effluent.
This review described solvent-tolerant lipases and their potential industrial, biotechnological and environmental impacts. Although organic solvent-tolerant lipase was first reported in organic solvent-tolerant bacterium, many organic solvent-tolerant lipases are in not only solvent-tolerant bacteria but also solvent-intolerant bacterial and fungal strains, such as the well-known Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Streptomyces and Aspergillus strains. As these lipases are not easily inactivated in organic solvents, there is no need to immobilize them in order to prevent an enzyme inactivation by solvents. Therefore, the solvent-tolerant lipases have the potential to be used in many biotechnological and biotransformation processes. With the solvent-tolerant lipases, a large number insoluble substrates become soluble, various chemical reactions that are initially impossible in water systems become practical, synthesis reactions (instead of hydrolysis) are possible, side reactions caused by water are suppressed, and the possibility of chemoselective, regioselective and enantioselective transformations in solvent and non-aqueous systems is increased. Furthermore, the recovery and reuse of enzymes is possible without immobilization, and the stabilities of the lipases improve in solvent and non-aqueous systems. Therefore, lipases with organic-solvent tolerances have attracted much attention in regards to applying them as biocatalysts to biotransformation processes using solvent and non-aqueous systems.

The objective of this study was to investigate biosorption of organic matter on EPS(Extracellular Polymeric Substances) at different SRT(Sludge Retention Time) in a SBR(Sequencing Batch Reactor) process, which was operated with the following operation steps : Fill-React-Settle-Decant-Idle. The hydraulic retention time was set to be 24 hours. The results obtained from this study showed that the organic removal efficiency per unit microbial biomass decreased with increasing SRT, and the corresponding EPS amount also did. The percent removal of organic by biosorption increased with SRT, and it reached to 53.2% at SRT of 30 days. However, the highest biosorption per microbial biomass(48.6 mgCOD/gVSS) was found at SRT of 2 days. The EPS analysis was performed by measuring TSS, TCOD$_{Cr}$, and TKN. The EPS production per unit microbial biomass was observed to be high at a low SRT. Due to the above result, the floc formation was hindered and therefore poor settlement of sludge resulted in decreasing the COD removal efficiency. It was therefore concluded that the consideration of the system design should include the characteristic of EPS as well as other factors such as SRT, MLSS, and organic loading.
In this work the production of glutathione (GSH) by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the monitoring of the process were studied. In shaking culture the production of GSH was high at initial pH value of 4 and at temperature of 30$^{\circ}C$. But when L-cysteine was added to the culture medium at the beginning of the cultivation, the productivity of GSH was low. In case 0,5% (v/v) of L-cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid were introduced to the culture medium in the exponential cell growth phase, high concentration of GSH (about 90 mg/L) was produced in the bioreactor. A fed-batch operation with stepwise glucose feeding strategy allowed to produce 102 mg/L of GSH. The cultivation processes were on-line monitored by a 2-dimensional fluorescence sensor. A few off-line data such as cell growth, cystein concentration, phosphate concentration and GSH productivity could be well correlated to the fluorescence intensity of some combinations of excitation and emission wavelengths.

This research was conducted to investigate whether sequential anoxic/aerobic biofilm reactors and microfilteration (MF) membrane system can be used as a direct treatment for the removal of perchlorate and nitrate in groundwater. The biofilm process consisted of an anoxic first stage to remove perchlorate and nitrate and aerobic second stage to remove remaining acetate used as a carbon source for dissimilatory reduction of perchlorate and nitrate. In final stage, hollow fiber MF membrane was used to remove turbidity. In this research, perchlorate was reduced from the influent concentration of 102 ${\mu}/L$ to below the IC detection level (5 ${\mu}/L$) and nitrate was reduced from 61.8 mg/L (14 mg/L $NO_3$-N) to 4.4 mg/L (1 mg/L $NO_3$-N). Acetate used as a carbon source was consumed from 179 mg/L $CH_3COO-$ to 117 and 11 mg/L $CH_3COO^-$ in effluents from anoxic and aerobic biofilm reactors, respectively. Turbidity was reduced from 3.0 NTU to 1.5, 0.3, and 0.2 NTU in effluents from anoxic/aerobic biofilm reactors and MF membrane, respectively. It is expected that the sequential anoxic/aerobic biofilm reactors and MF membrane system can efficiently remove perchlorate and nitrate in surface water or groundwater.
Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are chemolithoautotrophs that play a key role in nitrogen removal from advanced wastewater treatment processes. Various AOB species inhabit and their community compositions vary over time in the wastewater treatment bioreactors. In this study, a hypothesis that operational and environmental conditions affect both the community compositions and the diversity of AOB in the bioreactors was proposed. To verify the hypothesis, the clone libraries based on ammonia monooxygenase subunit A were constructed using activated sludge samples from aerobic bioreactors at the Pohang, the Palo Alto, the Nine Springs, and the Marshall wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In those bioreactors, AOB within the Nitrosomonas europaea, N. oligotropha, N.-like, and Nitrosospira lineages were commonly found, while AOB within the N. communis, N. marina, and N. cryotolerans lineages were rarely detected in the samples. The AOB community structures were different in the bioreactors: AOB within the N. oligotropha lineage were the major microorganisms in the Pohang, the Palo Alto, and the Marshall WWTPs, while AOB within the N. europaea lineage were dominant in the Nine Springs WWTP. The correlations between the AOB community compositions of the wastewater treatment bioreactors and their operational (HRT, SRT, and MLSS) and environmental conditions (temperature, pH, COD, $NH_3$, and $NO_3{^-}$) were evaluated using a multivariate statistical analysis called the Redundancy Analysis (RDA). As a result, COD and $NO_3{^-}$ concentrations in the bioreactors were the statistically significant variables influencing the AOB community structures in the wastewater treatment bioreactors.
