A Study of the Visual Irony of a Painting Using 'Dépaysement' ('데페이즈망(Dépaysement)'을 통해 본 회화의 시각적 아이러니(Irony)연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to primarily explore the characteristics of 'irony' and focus on the process of visualizing it. 'Irony' is one of the rhetorics used to describe the context or situational aspects of writing. This 'Dépaysement' that appears in art history corresponds to 'ironic' rhetoric in writing. 'Dépaysement' is a combination of techniques, which conveys a message through de-familiarizing rhetoric. With the images conflicting with each other in logic on the same canvas. 'Dépaysement' and 'ironic' rhetoric have commonalities in that they produce a situation with opposite or contradictory images and obscure the images and the situation by distorting them into being different from what has usually been known. In conclusion, Ironic Characteristics and Visual technique elements of dépaysement are identical, this study attempts to understand the visual language by analyzing 'the visual irony' that appears in artworks.

Effect of Noise Reduction Function in Digital Camera on the Resolution of Digital Image (디지털카메라의 노이즈감소기능이 이미지 해상도에 미치는 영향)

  • Recent digital camera development tendency shows the higher ISO extension which enables a user to take a picture in deemed lighting condition without using a flash or another equipment. Also noise reduction function has been developed to adjust the higher ISO extension. But using the high ISO causes a lot of noises so that proper noise reduction function should be adjusted. So the manufacturers introduce the advanced noise reduction function with higher ISOs as the digital camera performance development. On the other hands, the defect of noise reduction is not widely open such as remaining noise in high ISOs and decreasing resolution. Therefore, in this research we verify and experiment the decrease of resolution by using noise reduction function on a digital camera. Moreover we analyze the results how much the noise reduction function effects to the image resolution. And we present the results as practical numerical values.

  • Effective interaction between user and device is considered an important ability of IoT devices. For some applications, it is necessary to recognize human facial expressions in real time and make accurate judgments in order to respond to situations correctly. Therefore, many researches on facial image analysis have been preceded in order to construct a more accurate and faster recognition system. In this study, we constructed an automatic recognition system for facial expressions through two steps - a facial recognition step and a classification step. We compared various models with different sets of data with pixel information, landmark coordinates, Euclidean distances among landmark points, and arctangent angles. We found a fast and efficient prediction model with only 30 principal components of face landmark information. We applied several prediction models, that included linear discriminant analysis (LDA), random forests, support vector machine (SVM), and bagging; consequently, an SVM model gives the best result. The LDA model gives the second best prediction accuracy but it can fit and predict data faster than SVM and other methods. Finally, we compared our method to Microsoft Azure Emotion API and Convolution Neural Network (CNN). Our method gives a very competitive result.

  • Radiologic images are widely used in hospitals for diagnosing and treating patients' diseases. The radiologist accurately reads radiologic images, and thus helps diagnose patients correctly. The number of radiologists is much smaller than is necessary, however. In some small or rural hospitals, there are no radiologists residing there. In these cases, correct diagnosis and treatment are infeasible. Also, radiologists are not resident at hospitals all day long. Thus, emergency patients would suffer from the absence of radiologists at night. XRay21 Inc. and Data & Knowledge Engineering Lab. at Kangwon National University have been working together since 2000 in order to alleviate the problems above. Currently, the advances of the computer and network technology make it possible to connect a lot of radiologists and hospitals together through the Internet. By fully utilizing the Internet environment, we have developed an Internet-based medical diagnosis system, thus permitting remote diagnosis of radiologic images. This paper presents the technical experiences obtained in developing the system.

  • Software-related training can be considered essential in situations where software is an important factor in national innovation, growth and value creation. As one of the implementation methods for engineering education, various education through virtual simulations that can educate difficult situations in a similar environment are being conducted. Recently, the construction of smart factories at production and manufacturing sites is spreading, and product inspections using vision systems are being conducted. However, it has many difficulties due to lack of operation technology of vision system, but it requires a lot of cost to construct the system for education of vision system. In this paper, provide an educational virtual simulation model that integrates computer and physics engine camera functions and can extract and transmit video. It is possible to generate an image of 30Hz or more at an average of 35.4FPS of the experimental results of the proposed model, and it is possible to send and receive images in a time of 22.7ms, which can be utilized in an educational virtual simulation educational environment.

Metadata-Based Data Structure Analysis to Optimize Search Speed and Memory Efficiency (검색 속도와 메모리 효율 최적화를 위한 메타데이터 기반 데이터 구조 분석)

  • As the amount of data increases due to the development of artificial intelligence and the Internet, data management is becoming increasingly important, and the efficient utilization of data retrieval and memory space is crucial. In this study, we investigate how to optimize search speed and memory efficiency by analyzing data structure based on metadata. As a research method, we compared and analyzed the performance of the array, association list, dictionary binary tree, and graph data structures using metadata of photographic images, focusing on temporal and space complexity. Through experimentation, it was confirmed that dictionary data structure performs best in collection speed and graph data structure performs best in search speed when dealing with large-scale image data. We expect the results of this paper to provide practical guidelines for selecting data structures to optimize search speed and memory efficiency for the images data.

  • The stamp commemorating the inauguration of a president is the smallest historical symbol that contains a nation's vision and wishes of the times. The stamp itself is just a collection of images but contains the meaning of the highest leader's perceived image at the time through their face and a symbol. This paper regarded presidential inauguration commemorative stamps in the context of advertisement or promotional materials to structurally analyze the images of the political leaders embedded in stamps utilizing 'semiology' theory, which is considered to be a useful method of advertisement. In accordance with social and cultural changes, the 2000s, when the changes in the presidential inauguration stamp was most distinctively noticeable, was set as the time frame. Only the presidential inauguration commemorative stamps of Moo-hyun Roh, Myung-bak Lee, Geun-hye Park, and Jae-in Moon were selected for this study. In order to interpret the image, a semiotic structure was applied to reconstruct the meaning of the image of the political leaders. Since this can lead to subjective judgment in image analysis, it attempted to find the truth through comprehensive interpretation and approach it from the social and cultural contexts, not a static approach. In this paper, the images of the Korean political leaders in the 2000s shown on stamps are no longer influenced by traditional political factors such as political parties, political ideologies, and regional origins due to the evolution of democracy. This study derives the characteristics of the images of independent and characteristic leaders centered on a person according to the situations and social phenomena of the times.

Image Restoration Strategy for the Crisis Management of a Political Party: A Case Study of Presidential Impeachment (정당의 위기관리를 위한 이미지 회복 전략: 노무현 대통령 탄핵 사건을 중심으로)

  • This study examined image restoration strategies of political parties regarding the Presidential impeachment In Korea. The analytic framework of this study was Benoit's rhetorical theory of image restoration strategies. Results showed that both Hanara Party and Minju Party used attack accuser as a major image restoration strategy. However, Hanara Party changed their strategies from attack accuser to future oriented. Thus, Hanara Party's image restoration strategy successfully applied Coombs theory, which future oriented strategy was good for an organization of the high responsibility in the context of crisis situation.

An Investigation on Non-Relevance Criteria for Image in Failed Image Search (이미지 검색 실패에 나타난 비적합성 평가요소 규명에 관한 연구)

  • Relevance judgment is important in terms of improving the effectiveness of information retrieval systems, and it has been dominant for users to search and use images utilizing internet and digital technologies. However, in the field of image retrieval, there have been only a few studies in terms of identifying relevance criteria. The purpose of this study aims to identify and characterize the non-relevance criteria from the failed image searches. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a total of 135 participants were recruited and a total of 1,452 criteria items were collected for this study. Analyses and identification on the data set found thirteen criteria such as 'topicality', 'visual content', 'accuracy', 'visual feature', 'completeness', 'appeal to user', 'focal point', 'bibliographic information', 'impression', 'posture', 'face feature', 'novelty', and 'time frame'. Among these criteria, 'visual content' and 'focal point' were introduced in this current study, while 'action' criterion identified in previous studies was not shown in this current study. When image needs and image uses are analyzed with these criteria, there are distinctive differences depending on different image needs and uses.

A Study of Social Media User Response about Firms' Crisis Response Strategies (기업의 위기대응전략에 대한 소셜 미디어 이용자의 반응 연구)

  • The importance of online communication is getting increased by the rapid growth of smartphone supply and Social Network Service (SNS) use. Catching up with the trend, firms are actively use SNS to improve brand image, promote products, and communicate with customer. On the one hand, SNS is the channel for firms' marketing activities, but on the other, it is also the channel where the events related to the firms propagate in real time. Firms are led to unexpected state of crisis, when events are quickly spread out on SNS. Then firms are assessed their image by the way they deal with the state of crisis. This paper proposes to figure out user response on SNS according to each crisis response strategies by analyzing event-related twitter data when crisis situations of firms arise. We classify crisis response strategies into response attitude, defensive and accommodative response, and response speed, fast and slow response. This paper suggests optimal crisis response strategy to firms regarding state of crisis propagated on SNS.
