  • Cold-induced sterility is a problem of rice (Oryza sativa L.) production in temperate regions and high elevation tropics. The present study was conducted to measure combining ability, determine character associations. and to evaluate effectiveness of F$_2$selection for tolerance to this type of cold injury. The F$_1$, F$_2$, F$_3$ and reciprocal backcross F$_1$ populations of a nine-parent diallel were grown at Davis, California. a relatively cool location for rice. Additive genetic variance was predominant but some non -additive genetic variance existed for cold tolerance. Good general combining ability (GCA) was generally associated with the cold tolerant parents, 'M-201', and 'L-201', and poor GCA with the most susceptible parent. 7703008. Sterility was positively correlated with late heading. negatively with mature plant height. and negatively with spikelet number. Of the three agronomic characters, heading date had the greatest influence on sterility. Selection of F$_2$'s in seven crosses involving M-101, the most cold-tolerant parent, was effective for increasing cold tolerance. Realized heritability estimates for cold tolerance averaged 0.53, and observed selection response for cold-induced sterility averaged -9.4 percentage points.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the genetic and non-genetic factors affecting kid survivability in goats from birth to 90 days of age. The purebreds had lower survivability than the crossbreds, with significant (p$<$0.05) difference amongst themselves for the age of 31 to 90 days. The locational effect on survivability was insignificant for all the periods except 16 to 60 days (p$<$0.05) of age. The sex and birth type also had significant (p$<$0.05) effect on survivability for all the periods except 0 to 7 days of age. The survivability was found to be significantly (p$<$0.05) higher for kids born in summer season followed by those born in winter and rainy season. Milk produced by the does were significantly (p$<$0.05) affected on the survivability of kids during the period from 16 to 60 days of age. The survivability of kids were highest and lowest having milk yield of doe found to be 400-600 g/day and 80-200 g/day, respectively. Birth weight had significant (p$<$0.05) effect on survivability for all the stages of growth up to 90 days of age. Survivability was positively correlated with does’ milk yield as well as kids birth weight. Interactions of sex with location or birth type were significant (p$<$0.01 and p$<$0.05, respectively) though interaction between sex and genetic group was insignificant.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the productivity of Korean native chicken (KNC) 2 strains crossbred. The number of chicks analyzed in this study was 300. Crossbreds used in this studywere A) KNC R strains ${\times}$ KNC meat type S strains, B) KNC egg-meat D strains ${\times}$ KNC meat type H strains, C) KNC egg-meat D strains ${\times}$ KNC meat type S strains, D) KNC egg-meat C strains ${\times}$ KNC native Y strains, and E) KNC native Y strains ${\times}$ KNC meat type H strains. The crossbreds C had the highest performance on body weight gains at 7~10 weeks but crossbreds D showed the lowest (p<0.05). The feed conversion ratio of crossbreds D was the highest value at every weeks (p<0.05). But the carcass weight and carcass ratio of crossbreds D was the lowest value at every weeks (p<0.05). For the percentage of cutted meat, the ranges of mean were 30.60~33.75% in breast, 21.48~24.72% in leg, 11.95~14.33% in wing, 21.91~25.83% in back and of 7.38~8.72% in neck. The percentage of cutted meat for leg was the highest value at every weeks (p<0.05). These results suggested that the development of new crossbreds should be necessary for better performance.

  • A female preference is a potentially complex function relating variation in multiple male traits with her probability of accepting the most optimal individuals as a mate. If mate preference is dominantly driven by additive fitness benefits, different females tend to be congruent in the decision of choice, whereas females will not necessarily share their mate preferences if non-additive benefits more strongly operate. Here, a sequential blocked design ($4{\times}4$) was applied to experimentally assess the relative contribution of additive and non-additive components to the female mate preference with Korean rosy bitterling, Rhodeus uyekii. In a total of 48 single stimulus presentations, behavioral elements of courtship activities were analyzed to derive the 'index of female preference'. Females showed a clear preference for males with more elaborate carotenoid colors, but mated randomly with respect to male body size and other color patterns. However, they were not individually consistent in their choice of mates, suggesting that non-additive components probably contribute to the evolution of female preference.

  • To analyze the inheritance of emergence rate of brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) biotypes, six crosses among biotype 1, biotype 2 induced by rearing on Mudgo and biotype 3 these on ASD 7, were made. Each generation $(P_1,\;P_2,\;F_l\; F_2,\;BC_1,\;BC_2)$ of each cross was fed on the rice seedlings of Mudgo and ASD 7 varieties. The emergence rate of biotpe 2 on Mudgo was controlled by the one incomplete dominant gene in $biotype\;l{\times}biotype$ 2 coross, however, that of biotype 3 on ASD 7 was controlled by one incomplete recessive gene in $biotype\;l{\times}biotype$ 3 cross. The genes involved in biotype 2 and biotype 3 were not identical, however, their allelic relations are not clear.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the genetic effect on the duration of grain filling with using the eight corn inbreds. In diallel cross analysis, the grain filling during the lag period showed partial dominance with great additive effects. Inbreds FR14A and A508 showed greater recessive gene effects for lag period, while FR25 showed greater effects of dominant genes. The genetic analysis for the effective filling period(EFP) showed over dominance without additive gene effects. FR25 of 8 inbreds showed greatest effects of dominant genes for EFP, while YUBC208 showed greater recessive gene effects for EFP than other inbreds. The genetic analysis for total grain filling period(TGFP) seemed to be due to partial dominance with greater additive effects. Early inbred line, YUBC208 especially showed greater recessive gene effects for TGFP than others. No. of effective genes related to EFP and TGFP were estimated by at least 5.

  • Larval morphological characters such as body color and stripe pattern were analyzed to get morphological genetic markers of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hiibner). Body color was varied from light green to dark brown with diets. Stripe characters were classified by the presence of dorsal and lateral lines: three stripes with both lines, one stripe with dorsal line only, and zero stripe. Proportions of each stripe character increased with successive selections for its own character. Three stripe was dominant to one stripe when they were crossed. The estimated heritability in narrow sense (h2) of the stripe pattern was 0.50k0.42. About two fold more females than males were produced in zero stripe line. Stripe pattern was not significantly changed by different diets except in welsh onion which had lower proportion of three stripe individuals than that of the expected. Larval stripe pattern was also correlated with larval and pupal developmental rates and cold hardiness but not with insecticide susceptibility.

  • The development of resistance to acequinocyl was found in the population of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, collected from rose greenhouses in Gimhae, Gyeongnam province in January 2001. This pest is reared on 5 years treated with acequinocyl (over 200 times), and increased 87.8 folds in resistance as compared to susceptible strain (S). Inheritance of acequinocyl resistant strain (R) and cross resistance of this strain to 8 acaricides against T. urticae adults and eggs was investigated. There were differences of susceptibility in the acequinocyl concentration-mortality relationships in $F_1$ progenies obtained from reciprocal cross with the S and R strain ($S(female){\times}R(male)$, $R(female){\times}S(male)$). Degrees of dominance were -0.75, -0.57 in $F_1$ progenies of adult and egg of $S(female){\times}R(male)$. Inheritance in $F_1$ progenies of $S(female){\times}R(male)$ was incomplete recessive. Degree of dominance were 0.81, 0.45 in $F_1$ progenies of adult and egg of $R(female){\times}S(male)$, respectively. These results suggest that inheritance of acequinocyl resistance is controlled by a complete dominance. The R strain exhibited cross resistance of 1.1 and 0.9 fold to amitraz, bifenazate, and negatively correlated cross resistance of 0.08 fold to emamectin benzoate in adult females. The R strain showed cross resistance of 37.7, 14.0, and 26.2 fold to amitraz, milbemectin and spriodiclofen in eggs, respectively. Particularly it showed high levels of cross-resistance to pyridaben with 6538.3 fold. These chemicals showed negatively correlated cross-resistance exhibited 0.4, 0.3, and 0.2 fold to ahamectin, bifenazate, and emamectin benzoate in eggs.

  • Allele information from the analysis of the 13 microsatellite (MS) markers, were classified into the $F_0$, $F_1$ and $F_2$ generations, and probabilities of the same individual emergency in each generation was calculated. As a result, the 13 MS markers showed an estimate of $3.84{\times}10^{-23}$ on the premise of the randomly mated group of $F_2$, which implies that the same individuals may emerge by the use of 37 kinds of SNP markers. In this study, the experimental pigs were intercross between only 2 breeds (Korean native pig and Landrace). In addition, the success rate of paternity tests was analyzed on the whole group, by the use of the 13 MS markers and 37 SNP markers. As regards the exclusionary power of the second parent ($PE_{pu}$), MS markers and SNP markers showed 0.97897 and 0.99149, respectively. In relation to the parent exclusion power of both parent (PE), MS markers and SNP markers showed 0.99916 and 0.99949, respectively. In the case of the estimate to identify parental candidates that had the highest probability ($PNE_{pp}$), the two showed 1.00000 all. The Korean pig industry tends to mass produce hogs with limited numbers of alleles in limited parents. Such being the case, there is a need to organize a marker, for which it is imperative to find markers with high efficiency and high economic feasibility of the characteristics of DNA markers, sample size, the accuracy and expenses of genotyping cost, the manageability of data and the compatibility among analysis systems.
