  • Loss experience can bring more negative impact to the person, if experienced in a younger period. This study examined how self-esteem mediates the effect of emotional expression and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies regarding one's loss during adolescence among college students on depression. The data of 380 college students entails what kind of loss was experienced, how the level of self-esteem mediated the effect of emotional expression and maladaptive emotion regulation strategy after loss experience on depression; and it was analyzed with SPSS 21.0 and Amos 21.0. The results showed that emotional expression about loss experiences was negatively correlated with depression (${\beta}=-.180$, p<.01), and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies showed a positive correlation with depression (${\beta}=.266$, p<.001). The emotional expression of loss experiences decreased the level of depression by increasing the level of self - esteem, and maladaptive emotion regulation strategy of loss experience increased depression level by lowering self-esteem level. Therefore, it is conceivable to assume that the more people articulate on various emotional experiences after their loss and think positively about themselves, and the less they criticize for themselves, the less likely they are to experience depression while maintaining high self-esteem.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the path that the elderly discrimination experiences and sense of loss lead to suicidal ideation by verifying the influence of the elderly's discrimination experience on suicidal ideation and the mediating effect of sense of loss. To this end, questionnaire a survey was conducted on 400 elderly people aged 65 years or older who used 10 elderly welfare centers using stratified sampling of 31 cities, counties, and districts in Gyeonggi-do. Additionally, a total of 380 samples were finally analyzed excluding dishonest responses. As a result of the study, first, the more individual and social discrimination experiences, which are sub-factors of the elderly discrimination experience, increased suicidal ideation. Second, individual discrimination experiences were found to has a static effect on suicidal ideation through partial mediation of sense of loss. Third, the experience of social discrimination showed a static effect on suicidal ideation by perfect mediating the sense of loss. Therefore, it was found that the sense of loss acts as a risk factor for the elderly's suicidal ideation. Based on the research results, the urgent need for institutional supplementation to prevent the elderly's social discrimination experiences was suggested, and practical implications for preventing elderly suicide by resolving the sense of loss in the elderly welfare practice field were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effect of decentering between centrality of event and meaning reconstruction, based on relational loss experiences. To do so, surveys were conducted on 295 people(male: 109, female: 186) who would experience relational loss and be over 20 years old in the country using a questionnaire including a relational loss history checklist, the CES(Centrality of Event Scale), the Decentering Scale and the GMRI(Grief and Meaning Reconstruction Inventory). And the valid data were statistically processed using SPSS 22.0 program. The results of the study was followed. First, both centrality of event and decentering had positive corrleations with meaning reconstruction. Second, decentering completely mediated relationship of centrality of event and meaning reconstruction. Centrality of event had no direct effect on meaning reconstruction and the entire effect of centrality of event on meaning reconstruction was transmitted only through the path of decentering. Based on these results, limitations and implications of this study and suggestions for future studies were discussed.

  • This research reports on a qualitative analysis of email facilitated reflective dialogue with seven college students whose parent dies. The study was exploratory in considering cultural values on intact family and asked the question: What do children experience after parental death in terms of the relationships with intra and extrafamily systems? Young adult children of single parent family expressed that they felt social pressure to practice filial piety toward their single parent. They made efforts to fulfill the social expectation and to achieve social desirability. Social stigma from extrafamily systems affected the experiences of the bereaved children. In terms of intrafamily system, young adult children tend to idealize their deceased parent. Single parents depended on the young adult children, which made parent-child relationship enmeshed or conflicting. The holistic view of the study highlights the importance of interactions between individuals and the intra and extra family systems when understanding family loss experience of the bereaved young people.

  • Pets are increasingly becoming vital companions in human life, prompting researchers to focus on understanding the grief experiences of pet owners. Unlike other forms of loss, pet loss often leads to complicated grief, characterized by intense and prolonged sorrow. This is likely due to the comparatively lower societal value placed on the human-pet relationship, which may restrict pet owners from feeling truly understood by others. The subjective perception of these "social constraints" significantly hampers the process of recovering from pet loss and contributes to the development of complicated grief. In this study, we hypothesize that the perceived social constraints could intensify the transition from the initial shock of pet loss to complicated grief. The results confirm that pet owners' perceived social constraints play a moderating role in the relationship between the shock of pet loss and complicated grief. Notably, pet owners experience heightened levels of complicated grief when perceiving greater social barriers and constraints. By highlighting the pivotal role of perceived social constraints in comprehending the experiences of pet loss and grief, this study underscores the importance of social awareness and improvement.

  • This study aimed to identify the factors that helped and hindered secondary school teachers who experienced student suicide using the concept-mapping approach. Seven South Korean middle and high school teachers were interviewed from which 113 core statements were elicited. The participants sorted these core statements into categories by meaning. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis were conducted to identify the underlying structure of the teachers' experiences. Four hindering factor clusters emerged: (1) regret over failing to prevent the suicide, (2) an apathetic atmosphere in the school, (3) a sense of helplessness related to suicide survivors, and (4) approach-avoidance conflicts related to suicide survivors. Six helpful factor clusters emerged: (1) cooperation and care offered between suicide survivors, (2) focusing on the present, busy life, (3) spiritual activity, (4) social support, (5) overcoming grief through altruistic behaviors, and (6) sympathy for the deceased. Two dimensions were found for both the hindering and helpful factors. The hindering factor dimensions were external system-internal experiences and related to suicide survivors-related to suicide decedents. The helpful factor dimensions were distancing from the loss-approaching the loss and professional activities-personal activities. The present study empirically explored and described the underlying structure of teachers' bereavement experiences after student suicides.

  • The word "Loss" means being deprived a person's meaningful property, people or idea by irresistible force, and it is not avoidable in one's life. Especially, the elderly have higher possibility to experience this "Loss" than any other age groups on account of their characteristics. Feeling grief of loss after going through any kind of loss is natural and normal. However, if someone has severe trouble with overcoming this grief, it would affect negatively to his/her psychological or social inelastic. Therefore, we tried to find out which factors consists the "Grief of loss" and how it affects on the elderly's quality of life, especially on the sense of ego-integrity through this study. 97 of the elderly over age 65 participated in the survey and the results as follow; grief of loss is classified into four factors, 'economical loss', 'loss from being parted by death', 'loss of physical functions' and 'loss of relations'. These four factors of "Grief of loss" showed negative correlations with the scores of the sense of ego-integrity factors except 'acceptance of death'. Especially, the 'economical loss' affects on every factor of the sense of ego-integrity negatively except 'acceptance of death' and 'acceptance of aging'. Moreover, 'loss of physical functions' and 'loss of relations' affect negatively on elderly's satisfaction to their lives. On the other hand, the 'loss from being parted by death' of "Grief of loss" and 'acceptance of death' of the sense of ego-integrity showed no statistically significant effect in every process of analysis.
