  • An analysis of changes in herbal tea composition according to the difference in processing conditions showed slightly reduced crude protein content and increased, moisture, crude fat and solid elution rate after treatment using the ash puffing process compared to roasting. Benzopyrene content was significantly reduced to 0.18 ppb from 0.51 ppb. This result indicated that, the $B({\alpha})P$ content differed depending on the processing condition and raw materials. Generation of food $B({\alpha})P$ is mainly include the thermal decomposition of food cooking, when the processing which is a main component of food carbohydrate, protein, fat reason despite severe heat treatment as a whole is to be detected even though the $B({\alpha})P$ in this way is considered to be. The taste, aroma and color did not show a large difference, but the strong bitters taste decreased.

  • Ground-based measurements were conducted from January 6 to 12 of 2015 for understanding characteristics of nitrogen containing carbonaceous aerosols as 16 amino acids at the Mokpo National University, Korea. The detailed amino acid components such as Cystine ($(SCH_2CH(NH_2)CO_2H)_2$) and Methionine ($C_5H_{11}NO_2S$) and their sources were analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Fluorescence Detection (HPLC-FLD) for behavior of secondary products in particulate matter. In addition, organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) based on the carbonaceous thermal distribution (CTD), which provides detailed carbon signature characteristics relative to analytical temperature, and water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) by total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer were used to understand the carbon compound behaviors. The backward trajectories were discussed for originations of carbonaceous aerosols as well. Different airmasses were classified with the amino acids and OC thermal signatures. The results can provide to understand the aging process influenced by the long-range transport from East Sea area.

  • This research study has been conducted to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of Sanjoin-Tang(酸棗仁湯) for insomnia relief. The clinical testing of Sanjoin-Tang(酸棗仁湯) was carried out at Oriental Medical Center of Dong-Eui University with the participation of 30 patients. The results of Sanjoin-Tang(酸棗仁湯) treatments show as follows: Change of total amount of sleep showed 1.75±2.23 hours of increase.(p-value=0.001, respectively) Change of average delaying bedtime before and after the treatment showed 1.57±2.50 hours of decrease.(p-value=0.001, respectively) Change of average bedtime arousal before and after the treatment showed 0.96±1.46 times of decrease. (p-value=0.004, respectively) Change of sleep quality after the treatment has improved. According to statistical results, Sanjoin-Tang(酸棗仁湯) has proven effective for reducing sleep disorders, and this, restoring normal sleep patterns.

A Comparison of Spinosin Content in Zizyphi Semen and Its Processed Products by Roasting (산조인의 수치에 따른 Spinosin 함량 비교)

  • The aim of this study was to compare the amount of spinosin in the 70% ethanol extracts of non-processed Zizyphi Semem (ZS) and processed ZS by roasting using a high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with photodiode array detector. Separation of the spinosin was used $SunFire^{TM}$ $C_{18}$ analytical column ($5{\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}150mm$) using two mobile phase consisting of distilled water and acetonitrile, both with 1.0% (v/v) acetic acid. The flow rate was 1.0 mL/min and injection volume was $10{\mu}L$. Calibration curve of the spinosin was y = 22339.45x+483.99 in tested concentration range ($1.28-20.00{\mu}g/mL$) and correlation coefficient was 1.0000. In non-processed ZS sample, the amount of the spinosin was 0.94 m/g, while, the amount of the marker compound in processed ZS samples were 0.66-1.10 mg/g.

  • The content of general components such as moisture, crude ash, protein and crude fat were not different among the samples, but the content of crude protein in the fresh garlic was higher (in fresh garlic) than that of heat-treated garlic. Eighteen amino acids were analysed from the fresh garlic. The content of arginine was the highest in the fresh garlic. The amount of free amino acids was less than that of total amino acids, but their compositions were similar. Among minerals, the content of K was much higher than those of Mg, Ca and Na. The volatile compounds from the garlic extracts were identified by GC/MS. The composition of diallyl disulfides was very high among the volatile compounds, which were decreased in heat-treated ones.

  • This experiment investigated the effects of feed additives of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai (SQN) extract on Landrace pigs on economic traits such as the quality, physiological characteristics, and productivity. Sixteen pigs with an average age of 154 days were selected as experimental subjects. The experiment was conducted by dividing the group into eight pigs for the supplementation group, feeding with SQN extract, and another eight for the control group feeding without SQN extract. Water was fed ad libitum. On the 30th day, there was no significant difference between meat quality and productivity. However, the glucose and thyroxine were statistically lower with the supplementation group than with the control group (p<0.05). Also, the levels of creatinine difference between 1.18 ± 0.12 mg/㎗ with the supplementation group and 0.70 ± 0.06 mg/㎗ with the control group (p<0.05). However, all serum biochemistry values were within a normal range, with no health problems. The present study will help solve the problem of reducing the diversity of plant species in Halla Mountain by increasing the availability of the SQN as a pig feed additive.

Changes of chemical compositions of cereals by Phellinus linteus mycelial cultivation (상황진흙버섯 균사배양 곡물의 성분변화)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of cultivated cereals by Phellinus linteus mycelium. Also, we investigated the content of free sugar, organic acid, free amino acid, mineral and fatty acid of cultivated cereals by P. linteus mycelium. The major free sugars were determined the glucose, maltose, and fucose by HPLC. The content of total free sugars was the highest in cultivated red rice by P. linteus mycelium at $36^{\circ}C$. The content of fucose was the highest in cultivated red rice by P. linteus mycelium at all cultivation temperatures. The organic acids were identified oxalic acid, malic acid, citric acid, and succinic acid, as in the case of free sugar, higher contents of organic acids were observed in the cultivated cereals by P. linteus mycelium than control. There was no significant difference in the mineral content between the control and cultivated cereals by P. linteus mycelium. Sixteen kind of free amino acid were detected in cultivated cereals by P. linteus mycelium. And the content of total free amino acids were higher in the cultivated cereals by P. linteus mycelium than the control. And essential amino acids showed significantly differences between control and cultivated cereals by P. linteus mycelium. Fatty acids were detected with seven kinds of fatty acids, and the major fatty acid was determined the linoleic acid by GC-MS. The content of linoleic acid was higher in the cultivated cereals by P. linteus mycelium than the control.

The Effect of Feeding TMR with Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai on the Body Weight and Blood Composition of the Horse (제주조릿대(Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai) 첨가 TMR 급여가 말의 체중 및 혈액 성상 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding TMR(Total Mixed Ration) with Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai of Jeju cross-bred horses on the body weight and blood composition. Fourteen herds of Jeju cross-bred horses older than 36 months were selected as experimental animals. The experiment was conducted by dividing the herds into seven herds for feeding TMR with 20% Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai(treatment) and another seven herds for feeding TMR without Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai(control) and water were fed ad libitum. In the 12th week, the MPV(mean platelet volume) was statistically significantly higher with Sasa TMR than with control (p<0.05). However, both MPV levels are within a normal range and there were no health problems. With regard to the levels of cholesterol, there was a statistically significant difference between the 33.8±5.9 mg/㎗ with individual management and 25.4±8.2 mg/㎗ with control group (p<0.05). But It are also within a normal range and there were no health problems. In conclusion, feeding TMR with 20% Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai of Jeju cross-bred horses could be utilized as a feeding method for horse.

Association Analysis of the 6-bp Deletion Variant of the MYH3 Gene with Meat Color Traits in Crossbred (Landrace × Jeju Native Black Pig) Pigs (제주재래흑돼지와 랜드레이스 교배 축군에서 MYH3 유전자의 6-bp 결실 변이와 육색 형질간의 연관성 분석)

  • This study was conducted to examine the association between the myosin heavy chain 3 (MYH3) in 6-bp deletion variant genotypes and meat color traits in a crossbred pig population Landrace and Jeju native black pigs (JNBP). The longissimus dorsi, semimembranosus, triceps brachii and biceps femoris muscle from each carcass were used for the analysis of meat color traits. A total of 187 pigs and three meat color traits, CIE L* (lightness), CIE a* (redness), and CIE b* (yellowness), were analyzed. All experimental pigs were successfully genotyped for the MYH3 6-bp deletion variant using Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. We detected three MYH3 6-bp deletion variant genotypes qq, Qq, and QQ with 0.091, 0.551 and 0.358 genotype frequencies, respectively. Compared to qq homozygotes, the MYH3 6-bp deletion QQ genotype animals showed a higher levels of the meat colors traits CIE L* (lightness), CIE a* (redness), and CIE b* (yellowness) in longissimus dorsi (p>0.05, p<0.001, p<0.001), semimembranosus (p>0.05, p<0.001, p<0.001), triceps brachii (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001), and biceps femoris (p<0.01, p<0.001, p<0.001), respectively. The QQ genotype pigs was associated with increasing meat color traits in the crossbred between Landrace and JNBP. Our findings suggest that the MYH3 6-bp deletion variant genotypes can be used as valuable genetic markers for JNBP-related breeding programs to improve meat quality and control meat color traits.

Characterization of Dopamine Receptor D4 Gene Polymorphisms in Horses (말에서 Dopamine Receptor D4 유전자의 변이 특성 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the genetic polymorphisms of dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) in horse breeds and its association with substrate characteristics in Jeju crossbreds (Jeju Horse × Thoroughbred). Polymorphisms in DRD4 are candidate genes associated with temperament in various mammals, including humans. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) G292A in the exon 3 region of the horse DRD4 has a reported association with curiosity and vigilance in thoroughbreds. Sanger sequencing was used to identify polymorphisms of the mutations in DRD4 in three horse breeds. The SNP frequency in Jeju horses was significantly different from the frequency in other breeds. Character evaluation, conducted in the Jeju crossbreds and scored using a temperament test and contact test, revealed a high correlation between each test. Comparison of the polymorphism in the DRD4 of horses and the results of the character evaluation revealed lower scores for all temperaments in horses carrying allele A. Comparison of the SNP of G292A and blood dopamine levels in Jeju crossbreds showed 2.87 times higher levels for the GA type than for the GG type. This study identified an association between DRD4 polymorphism and various test methods for evaluating horse temperament and levels of neurotransmitters. Further research could validate the use of this gene as a genetic marker for character evaluation.
