  • The study aims to explore the social art activities and to try the rules and types of the concepts as a aspect of recent art. In fact, there have already been many discussions about the relationship between art and society. However, it is pointed out that many of these discussions are at abstract and narrative levels, and the subjects of discussion are also focused on the art as a result. For this reason, this paper approaches social and artistic activities as a new trend about 'society' & 'art'. In particular, this paper would like to define concepts for social art activities and attempt to characterize them based on analysis of various cases. To that end, it compiles the discussion on the relationship between the arts and society of existing scholars. This paper especially intend to select examples of representative social and artistic activities that are actually taking place in Seoul and then use them to analyze the data from the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, which conducted the Round Table. As a result, studies have shown that Social Art Activities focus on artists activities and processes unlike Social Art. Since the artist himself becomes the main body and the result, he has a sympathetic character in the changes that will occur in the process and in response to certain consequences. This suggests that there are a variety of reasons for their participation and the results of their activities, and that they may be positioned for social and artistic activities depending on the location of their contacts.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of participation in cultural activities on happiness. The empirical results show that participation in cultural activities has a positive impact on individual happiness, because cultural activities cause entertainment and social contacts with people. Furthermore, the levels of income and education are analyzed by dividing them into high and low groups. Noteworthy is that the low-income and less-educated groups show lower participation in cultural activities than those in the high-income and well-educated groups, But the utility magnitude gained through cultural activities is higher. This implies that opportunity costs arising from financial and time constraints are greater in the low-income and less-educated groups than in the high-income and well-educated groups. Finally, for the low-income group, the marginal utility is reduced when spending on cultural activities exceeds certain levels, which means there exist a budget constraint for the low-income group.

  • This study focuses on the emergence of "hobby-preneurs" and the ways in which they are transforming the virtuous cycle of arts and cultural ecology. The hobby-preneur pursues and expands his or her favorite hobby into a professional job and/or arts business. Hobby-preneurs are the new driving force in the arts and cultural industry. Their activities enhance the arts as a public good even as they build valuable social capital for arts organizations and have a profound impact on supply and demand in the arts and cultural marketplace. Thus we found that by injecting and potentiating certain values that professional artists cannot directly deliver to arts consumers, hobby-preneurs function as major intermediaries in the virtuous cycle of arts and cultural ecology. To understand more about these emergent actors we examine their personal, social, and economic values and how these values guide their arts-related activities and thereby impact the ecology of the arts and cultural sector. In this study we use a phenomenological approach to investigate five hobby-preneurs and the particular ways their acquisition of professionalism is transforming the arts education node of the virtuous cycle in the creative sector.

  • Living culture emphasizes cultural activities in daily life based on local characteristics, and aims to integrate art with daily life to communicate with others through activities of local residents. In this process, the values that individuals and society should have, are evoked and restored. In order to understand the context and processes in which the values of the living culture are expressed as local culture, we analyzed the case of 'Gosaek Nongak(community band music, dance and rituals in Korea) conservation association' in Suwon area and tried to diagnose how art and daily life are integrated and restoring community life in the actual field. For this purpose, phenomenological research was conducted through literature review participatory observation, and in-depth interviews to categorize the social impacts of living culture activities and public support due to individual, community, and local influences. We found that public support for living culture led to increased artistic development and human interaction in the community, and that individuals who are thus empowered to seek artistic experience and actively interact with other people, emerge as vital subjects and practitioners of culture and arts in their local community. Furthermore, we found that the activities of living culture facilitated the formation of local identity for members and local residents. Through living culture activities, members and local residents became more aware of being members of the community and found value and meaning in participating in daily life and cultural activities.

  • This study aimed to propose implications for mental health and cultural arts education, in which certain factors can contribute to acquiring and improving creativity in adolescents to cultivate the creative human resources required in future society. The study used panel data from the Korean Education Longitudinal Study provided by the Korea Educational Development Institute. First, we analyzed the correlation between mental health and creativity and then examined mediation and serial mediation effects of the frequency of participation in cultural activities and the experience of them between two factors. The results showed that mental health was significantly positively correlated with creativity. Additionally, the frequency of participation in cultural activities and their experience were confirmed to have partial mediating effects. In other words, sound mental health factors such as comfort, enjoyment and happiness, cultural education, and cultural activities were found to have positive effects on creativity in adolescents. To develop creativity in adolescents, this study suggests the following challenges: (1) enhancing positive mental health, (2) increasing participation in cultural and artistic activities, (3) actively developing education programs for the cultural arts on community and educational sites, and (4) using and promoting local cultural and artistic education programs. These are expected to make an important contribution to fostering talented adolescents with creativity and convergence.
