  • We aimed to estimate the accumulated degree days required for the development of $Cloeon$ $dipterum$ (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) in an experimental tub under field conditions from August 7 to October 10 in 2011. After 4 days in a tub setting, a dead female adult was found on the water surface at which oviposition had presumably occurred. Adults emerged from 39 days to 61 days after the oviposition date. The total number of emerged adults was 229, and the sex ratio (number of females : total population) was 0.45, although not statistically significant ($p$ >0.05). The males generally emerged earlier than females. Assuming that the basal temperature ($T_b$) value is $0^{\circ}C$, we estimated the number of accumulated degree days required for the development of $C.$ $dipterum$ to be $1,221.8{\pm}116.0$ DD (mean${\pm}$SD). Since the annual number of accumulated degree days in the reference wetland was measured to be 5,650.0 DD, we estimated that $C.$ $dipterum$ is multivoltine, with a maximum of 4 cohorts in 1 year in natural habitats.

  • This study sought to identify the optimum substrate composition for the stable bottle cultivation of Sparassis latifolia. The main substrate was fermented larch sawdust. Six nutrient sources were mixed at a maximum volume ratio of 20%. The fresh weight of fruit body was the highest at 128.5 g for GMSL69033 and 126.6 g for 'Neoul' in the treatments of beet pulp and corn flour in a volume ratio of 15:5. In addition, the total cultivation period was 94 days, which was shorter than that required for other treatments. The selected substrate characteristics were pH 4.7, C:N (carbon to nitrogen) ratio of 106:4, moisture content of 70%, and air filling porosity of 38%. We plan to develop new income items through research on mycelial incubation and fruit body growth conditions.

Results are summarized as follows. The eggs were laid in mass on the leaf surface of the host plants. The oviposition period lasts for 26 days after late-May. The average number of eggs and average hatching rate were 20.36 and 97.61% , respectively. It takes 14-16 days until hatching. The egg shape was oval which its size was 1.01 mm in diameter and 1.48 mm in length. The body length of each larval instar from the 1st to the 5th were $3.52\pm$1.01, $6.46\pm$0.45, $13.19\pm$4.27, $24.08\pm$2.22 and $43.71\pm$5.62 mm, respectively. The larval period was observed from July to October, and total duration of larval stage was 116 days in which duration of each larval instar from the 1st to the 5th were 12, 36, 32, 16 and 20 days, respectively. During larval stage, a larvae feed on 17~18 seedlings. The 5th instar larvae built its place in soil for overwinter and became pupa. The body length of pupa was 33.6 mm and average weight was 2,032 mg Adult was emerged from overwintened pupa from mid through late-May in the followings year. • Water flea is a widely used test species in the aquatic ecotoxicity test. In Korea, D. magna is currently used as a standard test species, however that do not inhabit in the Korean aquatic ecosystem. In this study, Daphnia galeata, which is a dominant species in the Korean aquatic ecosystem, was collected from domestic lake and investigated to suggest the D. galeata for ecotoxicity assessment in Korea. We investigated the characteristics, life span, and toxicity sensitivity compared with D. magna. The life span test of D. galeata was performed in this study, and then the results were compared to the sensitivity with D. magna to confirm the applicability for ecotoxicity assessment. The 48h-L(E)C50 values for seven heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Zn) of D. galeata and D. magna were collected and analyzed. As a results, shorter lifetime, less reproduction, smaller body size of D. galeata were observed compared with D. magna. D. galeata was similar or more sensitive than D. magna for seven heavy metals. Therefore, we propose that D. galeata is a suitable test species for ecotoxicity testing in Korea.

  • An organophosphorus insecticide, chlorpyrifos and an arylnitrile fungicide, chlorothalonil commonly used far apple were subjected to a residual investigation under field conditions to ensure safety of terminal residues at harvest. After pesticides were applied at standard rate in apple tree fer 15 days for chlorpyrifos and 30 days far chlorothalonil, persistence of their residues in apple was investigated by several interval. At harvest, residual concentrations of chlorpyrifos and chlorothalonil in apple were 1.3 and 2.4mg/kg, respectively, and the residue levels were higher than MRL 1.0 mg/kg in Korea. As well fitted by the first-oder kinetics, biological half-lives of the pesticide residues in apple were 9.3 days for chlorpyrifos and 32.2 days for chlorothalonil. During the storage, half-lives of chlorpyrifos and chlorothalonil were 35.0 and 56.3days at room temperature, and 120.7 and 182.8 days at 412, respectively. Distribution of chlorpyrifos residue in flesh, fruit skin and stalk cavity of each apple corresponded to 0.1% 22.8% and 77.1%, respectively. In case of chlorothalonil, residue in flesh, fruit skin and stalk cavity was 4.4%, 10.4% and 85.2%, respectively.

  • Early life history of the endangered species Gobiobotia brevibarba was investigated to provide baseline data for biological characteristics and restoration. Adult fish were sampled by spoon net capture at Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea, in April 2010. Eggs were obtained after injection of Ovarprim and were artificially fertilized by the dry method in the laboratory. The mature eggs were slightly adhesive and transparent with greyish and average $1.24{\pm}0.07$ mm in diameter. The hatching of the embryos took place about 120 h after fertilization at a water temperature of $23^{\circ}C$. The newly-hatched larva averaged $5.5{\pm}0.29$ mm in total length. Four days after hatching, they averaged $7.4{\pm}0.26$ mm in total length and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. From 15 days after hatching, they entered the juvenile stage and reached $9.9{\pm}0.72$ mm in total length. One hundred days after hatching, their band patterns and external form were similar to those of adults, and they averaged $36.0{\pm}3.11$ mm in total length.

  • The world's first underground repository for low- and intermediate- level radioactive waste (SFR1) has been in operation since 1988. SFR1 can accommodate $1,000m^3$ of radioactive waste per year with 4 chambers and 1 silo with a total capacity of $63,000m^3$ of radioactive waste. With extended operation time of 10 of the 12 nuclear power reactors and dismantling of the other 2 nuclear reactors, more nuclear waste need to be disposed in the future. Therefore, Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) submitted a license application for a repository extension (SFR3) that consists of 6 additional rock chambers with a capacity of $108,000m^3$ of radioactive waste and for accommodating 9 boiling water reactor tanks. In this study, plans for the extension SFR3 are presented with the geological, geomechanical and hydrogeological issues to be considered.

  • Heterogeneous background fractures of granite and sedimentary rocks in Gyeongju LILW (low-intermediate level radioactive waste) facility area have been characterized quantitatively by analyzing fracture parameters (orientation, intensity, and size). Surface geological survey, electrical resistivity survey, and acoustic televiewer log data were used to characterize the heterogeneity of background fractures. Bootstrap method was applied to represent spatial anisotropy of variably oriented background fractures in the study area. As a result, the fracture intensity was correlated to the inverse distance from the faults weighted by nearest fault size and the mean value of electrical resistivity and the average volumetric fracture intensity ($P_{32}$) was estimated as $3.1m^2/m^3$. Size (or equivalent radius) of the background fractures ranged from 1.5 m to 86 m and followed to power-law distribution based on the fractal property of fracture size, using fractures measured on underground silos and identified surface faults.
