  • Slope optimization aims to maximize the slope angle in an open pit mine, resulting in subsequent profits from additional ore extraction. The large open pit mines have adopted the advanced technologies to increase slope angle until they ensure the slope stability. This paper introduces a current stage of slope optimization efforts and best practices from the open pit mines.

  • The study of seepage behavior is very important to slope stability of road landfill for heavy rainfall season. This study is done to propose more stable of road landfill based on analysis of seepage behavior and slope stability for some cases of road landfill. The selected sections of collapsed road landfill are most general case of road landfill, a case is landfill on the ground area and another case is on the slope area. The results of this study is summarized as follows. It is founded that the road landfill on the ground area is increased saturation region due to rainfall infiltration, and the seepage behavior of road landfill is solved by theory of unsaturated flow. The road landfill is more unstable due to rainfall infiltration at the slope surface, especially during heavy rainfall. The case of road landfill on the slope area is analyzed in consideration of slope surface infiltration, and it is founded that the slope instability is increased because of rainfall infiltration. The drain layer located on the original ground which made by more permeable materials could be good action of slope stability in the case of road landfill on the slope area.

  • In this study, in order to investigate the effects of reinforcement length and vertical spacing on the factor of safety, the road embankment reinforced by geogrid was analyzed using RSS(Reinforced Slope Stability) program based on limit equilibrium analysis. The result by computer analysis showed that the factor of safety for reinforced slope increased with increasing length of reinforcement and with decreasing vertical spacing of reinforcement up to certain limit. Also, numerical analysis by FLAC was performed on reinforced slope to evaluate the horizontal displacement, horizontal stress, and distribution of tensile forces of reinforcements in the cases of several reinforcement length. The results of analysis showed that the critical failure mode was toe failure or slope failure and the effect by the additional reinforcement length on the slope stability was negligible under stabilized condition.

  • The effects of ground water level, shear strength parameters of refuse, and geological condition of ground on the slope stability of uncontrolled waste landfill were studied. The Janbu method of slices based on the limit equilibrium method was used to calculate the minimum factor of safety with respect to slope stability of landfill. The analytical results showed that the factor of safety for a fully dried condition of landfill increased 2.4~2.8 times as great as that for a fully saturated condition of landfill. Under the condition of actual ground water level, the factor of safety linearly increased with increasing both cohesion and internal friction angle of refuse. Also, when the potential failure surface passed through the underlying layer, the factor of safety and shape of potential failure surface were found to depend on geological conditions of underlying layer.

  • Landslides which is one of the major natural hazard is defined as a mass movement of weathered material rock and debris due to gravity and can be triggered by complex mechanism. It causes enormous property damages and losses of human lift directly and indirectly. In order to mitigate landslide risk effectively, a new method is required to develope for better understanding of landslide risk based on the damaged cost produce, investment priority data, etc. In this study, we suggest a new evaluation method for slope stability using risk analysis. 30 slopes including 10 stable slopes, 10 slopes of possible failure and 10 failed slopes along the national and local roads are examined. Risk analysis comprises the hazard analysis and the consequence analysis. Risk scores evaluated by risk analysis show very clear boundaries for each category and are the highest for the failed slopes and the lowest for the stable slopes. The evaluation method for slope stability suggested by this research may define the condition and stability of slope more clearly than other methods suggested by others.

  • The condition, characteristics, and stability of slopes, as well as the consequences of slope failure, need to be understood for the proper stabilization of slopes and preclusion of potential disasters arising from slope failure. Here, a slope code system (SCS) that succinctly and accurately reflects the various conditions of a slope is proposed. The SCS represents the condition, characteristics, and geotechnical stability of slopes, as well as the consequences of slope failure, and the method is quickly and easily applied to a given slope. The SCS comprises five elements: 1) the slope material; 2) the genetic origin (rock type) and geological structure of the slope; 3) the geotechnical stability of the slope; 4) the probability of failure and remedial works made upon the slope; and 5) the consequences of failure. A letter code is selected from each element, and the result of the evaluation and classification of the slope is given as a five-letter code. Because the condition, characteristics, and geotechnical stability of a slope, as well as the consequences of slope failure, are provided by the SCS, this system will provide an effective mechanism for the maintenance and management of slopes, and will also allow more informed decision-making for determining which slopes should be prioritized for remedial measures.

  • A probabilistic approach to identify the effects of uncertainties of soil strength parameters on searching a critical slip surface with the lowest reliability is introduced. In general construction field, it is impossible for the engineer to always gather a variety of statistical information of soil strength parameters for which lots of laboratory and in-situ soil testing are required and to use it with enough statistical knowledge. Thus, in order that the engineer may easily understand the probabilistic concept for the slope stability analysis, this study proposes a combined procedure to incorporate the engineering probabilistic tools into the existing deterministic slope stability analysis methods. Using UTEXAS 3, a slope stability analysis computer program developed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (U.S. COE), this study provides the results of this probabilistic slope stability analysis in terms of probability of failure or reliability index. This probabilistic method f3r slope stability analysis appears to yield more comprehensive results of slope reliability than does existing deterministic methods with safety factors alone.

  • Recently, the number of tunnels on national roads has been increased due to the trend that construction of the large-scaled cut slopes is limited because of the environmental issues. Therefore, the slope failures of tunnel portal have often occurred. The tunnel portal in use has limitations on selection of the countermeasure and construction against slope failure. In the cases of Suanbo hot springs 1 and 2 tunnel portals, seedding was chosen and constructed as the countermeasureof slope failure when the tunnel was first built but collapsed in April, 2002. In this study, the failure sites were examined accurately through the site investigation and an efficient countermeasure according to stability analysis is presented. It is shown that it is very efficient to use resloping for Suanbo hot springs 1 tunnel and concrete buttress, rock anchor to reinforcement countermeasure, and attached rockfall prevention net by dividing the site into 3 sections for Suanbo hot springs 2 tunnel.
