Recently, ITU-T/VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG have started a new joint standardization activity on video coding, called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). This new standard gives significant improvement in terms of picture quality for high resolution video. The main challenge in this upcoming standard is the time complexity. In this paper we have focused on CU splitting algorithm. We have proposed a novel algorithm which can terminate the CU splitting process early based on the RD cost of the parent and current level and the motion vector value of the current CU. Experimental result shows that our proposed algorithm gives on average more than about 10% decrement in time over ECU [8] with on average 1.78% of BD loss on the original.
In recent years, a large number of robots have been developed in several countries, and these robots have been built for the purpose to appeal to users by well designed human-robot interaction. In case of the robots developed so far, they show proper reactions only when there is a certain input. On the other hands, they cannot perform in a standby mode which means there is no input. In other words, if a robot does not make any motion in standby mode, users may feel that the robot is being turned-off or even out of work. Especially, the social service robots maintain the standby status after finishing a certain task. In this period of time, if the robots can make human-like behavioral patterns such like a person in help desk, then they are expected to make people feels that they are alive and is more likely to interact with them. It is said that even if there is no interaction with others or the environment, people normally reacts to internal or external stimuli which are created by themselves such as moving their eyes or bodies. In order to create robotic behavioral patterns for standby mode, we analyze the actual facial expression and behavior from people who are in neutral affective emotion based on ethnographic methodology and apply extracted characteristics to our robots. Moreover, by using the robots which can show those series of expression and action, our research needs to find that people can feel like they are alive.

Digital watermarking is the technique that embeds invisible signalsincluding owner identification information, specific code, or pattern into multimedia data such as image, video and audio. Watermarking techniques can be classified into two groups; robust watermarking and fragile(semi-fragile) watermarking. The main purpose of the robust watermarking is the protection of copyright, whereas fragile(semi-fragile) watermarking prevents image or video data from illegal modifications. To achieve this goal watermark should survive from unintentional modifications such as random noise or compression, but it should be fragile for malicious manipulations. In this paper, an invertible semi-fragile watermarkingalgorithm for authentication and detection of manipulated location in MPEG-2 bit-stream is proposed. The proposed algorithm embeds two kinds of watermarks, which are embedded into quantized DCT coefficients. So it can be applied directly to the compressed bit-stream. The first watermark is used for authentication of video data. The second one is used for detection of malicious manipulations. It can distinguish transcodingin bit-stream domain from malicious manipulation and detect the block-wise locations of manipulations in video data. Also, since the proposed algorithm has an invertible property, recovering original video data is possible if the watermarked video is authentic.

Recently, depending on the development of smart devices, a variable services have been offered to meet user's convenience. Due to these advance, the needs of users are extremely being diversified and more specific. In that situation, the needs for the N-Screen system has been varied and gradually evolved. An existing N-Screen system that use the way of video streaming upload its multimedia contents to their own cloud server so that might take a long play-reaction time and the number of user is limited by the server's performance. Because of the web based protocol adopted by existing N-Screen system, there are many different problems like high delay, overhead and something caused by simplex data communications. Therefore, to solve the problems above, this study proposes an application based on HTML5. This application supports Video tag and Progressive download via HTML5 so that improves the play-reaction time for multimedia contents. This system can also get rid of the chronic problems such as an access limitation for lots of users as per video streaming encoding. Also, through web sockets, this study proposes a system that has lower delay than the existing system and communicates in full duplex to be able to link dynamically.
It is sometimes necessary to remove the captions and recover original images from video images already broadcast, When the number of images requiring such recovery is small, manual processing is possible, but as the number grows it would be very difficult to do it manually. Therefore, a method for recovering original image for the caption areas in needed. Traditional research on image restoration has focused on restoring blurred images to sharp images using frequency filtering or video coding for transferring video images. This paper proposes a method for automatically recovering original image using BMA(Block Matching Algorithm). We extract information on caption regions and scene change that is used as a prior-knowledge for recovering original image. From the result of caption information detection, we know the start and end frames of captions in video and the character areas in the caption regions. The direction for the recovery is decided using information on the scene change and caption region(the start and end frame for captions). According to the direction, we recover the original image by performing block matching for character components in extracted caption region. Experimental results show that the case of stationary images with little camera or object motion is well recovered. We see that the case of images with motion in complex background is also recovered.
In this paper, we proposed the qualify metric based on SVC and the subjective quality. The proposed quality metric is for a general purpose. It means we can use it for any video sequences regardless of its temporal and spatial characteristics. The Quality of Service(QoS) is one of the important issues in heterogeneous environment which has diverse restrictions such as limited network bandwidth and limited display resolution. Scalable Video Coding(SVC) is the efficient video coding skill in heterogeneous environment. Because SVC can be adapted to various quality bitstreams using three scalabilities(spatial, temporal, and SNR) from one bitstream which has full scalability. To maximize the QoS in this environment, we should consider the subjective quality which is the viewer response. And also we should consider temporal and spatial characteristics of video sequence because the subjective quality is affected by temporal and spatial characteristics of video sequence. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method, we perform subjective assessments. The experimental results show that the proposed method has high correlation with subjective quality. The proposed method can be a decision tool of SVC birstream extraction.
This paper presents a novel 360-degree video streaming system for large-scale immersive displays and its ongoing implementation. Recent VR systems aim to provide a service for a single viewer on HMD. However, the proposed 360-degree video streaming system enables multiple viewers to explore immersive contents on a large-scale immersive display. The proposed 360-degree video streaming system is being developed in 3 research phases, with the final goal of providing 6DoF. Currently, the phase 1: implementation of the 3DoF 360-degree video streaming system prototype is finished. The implemented prototype employs subpicture-based viewport-dependent streaming technique, and it achieved bit-rate saving of about 80% and decoding speed up of 543% compared to the conventional viewport-independent streaming technique. Additionally, this paper demonstrated the implemented prototype on UCSB AlloSphere, the large-scale instrument for immersive media art exhibition.

In this paper, we design the radio data link protocols with QoS provisioning for mobile multimedia such as voice, data, and video in CDMA-based ATM networks, and analyze the performance of the data link protocols. To support mobile multimedia traffic, the required QoS parameters and the characteristics are analyzed, and wireless protocol stacks are proposed for integrating the wireless access network and ATM transport networks, and radio data link protocols are designed for provisioning QoS Control. The data link protocols are analyzed assuming that the system is supporting voice and data traffic simultaneously. In case of data traffic, the delay and throughput of SREJ ARQ and Type-1 Hybrid ARQ scheme are compared, and in case of voice traffic, the packet loss rate of BCH coding is analyzed according to the varying data traffic loads. The results indicate that the adaptive radio link protocols are efficient to support QoS requirements while the complexities are increased.
This paper is to propose a scalable video coding scheme for adaptive digital hologram video service for various reconstruction environments. It uses both the light source information and digital hologram at both the sending side and the receiving side. It is a resolution-scalable coding method that scales the resolution, that is, the size of the reconstructed image. The method compresses the residual data for both the digital hologram and the light source information. For the digital hologram, a lossy compression method is used, while for the light source information, a lossless compression method is used. The experimental results showed that the proposed method is superior to the existing method in the image quality at the same compression ratio. Especially it showed better performance than the existing method as the compression ratio becomes higher.

The aim of this paper is to explore and understand the gifted student's characteristics such as NetLogo programming patterns, attitudes, his/her interest in problems solving. Based on transcripts and coding video frames, we explored the meaningful scenes to come up with thinking patterns, NetLogo programming patterns, attitudes, behaviors on tasks such as drawing regular starlike shapes. This case study contrasts with two other students revealing their unique characteristics both in computational thinking patterns and coding activities. The participant reveals his own ways of finding a clue and elaborating it further for coming up with concise NetLogo coding. This paper provides cross-case discussion and future research direction on how to improve gifted education in terms of problem solving in creative ways.
