  • This study was conducted to develop the design methodology of transverse post-tensioning for the prestressed concrete pavement (PSCP). The transverse stress distribution was analyzed when the transverse anchor spacing changed. The tensile stress distribution in the PSCP slab due to the environmental and vehicle loads was also investigated. The reasonable methods were discussed to determine the design loads including environmental and vehicle loads and the PSCP allowable tensile stress used for the basis of the selection of the stress application amount from the tensioning. The results of this study showed that as the transverse anchor spacing increased, the range of the stress loss became larger and the stress loss was significant near the shoulder. The design of the transverse post-tensioning can be performed by obtaining the stresses under the design loads and by considering the allowable tensile stress; however, the tensile stresses at different locations such as the shoulder, wheel pass, and slab interior should also be checked and kept below the allowable tensile stress.

  • This dissertation presents an exact solution for the shearing and normal stresses of an orthotropic plane body loaded by a pairtial-uniform shear load. The solution satisfies the equilibrium and compatibility equations concurrently. An Airy stress function is introduced to solve the problem related to an orthotropic half-infinite plane under a partial-uniform shear load. All the equations for orthotropy must be degenerated into the expressions for isotropy when orthotropic constants are replaced by isotropic ones. The author has evaluated all the equations of orthotropy and succeeded in obtaining exactly identical expressions to the equations of isotropy which were derived independently by means of L'hospital's rule. The analytical results of, isotropy ate compared with the simple results of other investigator. Since a concentrated shear load is a particular case of partial-uniform shear load, all the equations of partial-uniform shear load case are degenerated into the expressions for concentrated load case of isotropy and orthotropy. The formal solution is expressed in terms of closed form. The numerical results for orthotropy are evaluated for two kinds and two different orientations of the grain of wood. The type of wood considered are three-layered plywood and laminated delta wood. The distribution of normal and shearing stresses are shown in figures. It is noted that the distribution of stresses of orthctropic materials dependson the type of materials and orientations of the grain.

  • In this paper, the structural analysis is carried out with the vertical loading condition on the platform of the high place working vehicle. The model of analysis is reduced on the scale of 1:10. Deformation and stress distribution of boom are analyzed with the variation of angle at boom position and the vulnerable parts are checked. Analysis result shows that most stress is concentrated at the connection of the boom. Through this analysis result, the safety on this vehicle can be improved by making up for the relatively weak connection parts as compared with other parts.

  • In this paper, unified requirements of IACS on longitudinal strength of ships are investigated using nonlinear wave loads analyses under short term irregular waves. Also, analyses on IACS wave data were carried out for the purpose of presenting the guideline for future use. While keeping theoretical consistensy, the rule requirements for horizontal shear force, bending moment and torsional moment are newly proposed for the ships of large deck openings bases on the calculation results for 17 sample ships. The requirements for side shell hydrodynamic pressure are also presented. All the calculated results are compared with other Societies and present KR rules. These formula will be checked when corresponding requirements of structural scantling are determined.

  • A new modified full scale double tee slabs with the length of nib plate - 1,500 mm were suggested, designed, and experimentally evaluated up to the loading of flexural failure. This slabs were composed of the tee section which was same to original PCI double tee and the plate section which was modified in a new shape, and the prestressing force was applied at the bottom of tee section only. This specimens were made from the domestic precast factory. The safety and serviceability of the modified nib plate with the dapped ends were evaluated up to the ultimate flexural strength of tee section. As the experimental loading increased, the flexural crackings developed first in the bottom of the slab and they changed to the increased flexural shear and inclined shear crackings in the nib and dapped portion of the double tees. The suggested modified double tee slabs failed in ductile above the design loading with many evenly distributed flexural crackings. The thickness of nib plate - 250 mm does not show any cracking under the service loading and show several minor flexural cracking up to the ultimate state of tee portion. The proposed specimens were satisfied with the strength and ductility requirements in the design code provisions in the tests. Additional experimental tests are required to reduce the depth and tensile reinforcement of nib plate concrete for the practical use of this system effectively.

  • Efforts are presently underway for developing an optimal design methodology for GEN-IV nuclear reactors based on target failure probabilities. A typical example is the system-based code, in which the results are represented in the form of partial safety factors (PSFs). Thus, a PSF is one of the crucial elements in either component design or integrity assessment based on target failure probabilities during the operation period. In the present study, a procedure for calculating the PSF of a circumferential through-wall cracked pipe based on the elastic-plastic crack initiation criterion is established, in which the importance of each input variable is assessed. Elastic-plastic J-integrals are calculated using the GE/EPRI and reference stress methods, and the PSF values are calculated using both first- and second-order reliability methods. Moreover, the effect of statistical distributions of assessment variables on the PSF is also evaluated.

  • In this study, experimental analysis was performed about lateral load capacity and behavior of laterally loaded-bored rigid piles in muti-layered soil conditions. Lateral pile load tests were performed for muti-layerd soils consisting of different relative density. Ultimated lateral load capacities were measured from lateral load-displacement curves and compared with estimated values using theoretical methods. Bending moments and unit lateral capacity distribution of surrounding piles were measured from attached strain gauges and earth pressure sensors on the pile. It was found that ultimated lateral load capacities were different from the muti-layered soil conditions, and measured values were lower than estimated values. The bending moment distributions of the pile were similar all the time. Unit lateral capacity distributions were a little different from muti-layered soil conditions, but basically similar to the distribution proposed by Prasad and Chari (1999).

  • The purpose of this study was to comparatively analyze the stress distribution according to the inclinations of abutments and angulations of the implant fixtures under occlusal loading force. Three study models with straight and $15^{\circ}$ and $25^{\circ}$-angled abutments were prepared following the insertion of Implants parallel to the long axis of the tooth. Additional two experimental models were fabricated with $15^{\circ}$ and $25^{\circ}$ fixture inclinations. Using ANSYS 11, a finite element analysis program, the magnitudes of stress distribution were analyzed. The magnitude of stress under loading was lowest when the load was applied vertically onto the axis of implant. And the magnitude of stress under compound(vertical+oblique) loading was increased as the inclination of implant abutment and fixture was increase. But, the distribution of stress was different as the loading conditions, because of the horizontal offset. As the offset between the axis of loading and the central axis of the implant increased, the stress was increased.

  • Bulku temple in the city of Kyungju, Korea, built in 791 and reconstructed in the 20th century, is the home of seven national treasures including two three-story stone pagodas, Dabotap (height 10.4m, width 7.4m, weight 123.2ton) and Seokgatap (height 10.8m, width 4.4m, weight 82.3 ton). An earlier archaeological investigation shows that stone pagodas have experienced severe weathering process which will threaten their stability. At the base part of Dabotap, an offset of the stone alignment is also observed. For the purpose of the structural safety diagnosis of two pagodas, we introduce the nondestructive geophysical methods. Site characteristics around the pagodas are determined by the measurement of multiple properties such as seismic velocity, resistivity, image of GPR(ground-penetrating radar). Near the pagodas, the occurrence of high resistivity (up to 2200 Ωm) is obvious whereas their outskirts have as low as 200 Ωm. For the velocity of the P wave, the site of Dabotap has the range of 500~800 m/s which is higher than counterpart of Seokgatap with the velocity of 300~500m/s, indicating the solider stability of Dabotap site. Consequently, in addition to GPR images, the foundation boundaries beneath each stone pagodas are revealed. The Dabotap site is in the form of an octagon having 6-m-long side with the depth of ~4m, whereas the Seokgatap site the 9m × 10m rectangle with the depth of 3m. These subsurface structures appear to reflect the original foundations constructed against the stone load of ~8 ton/㎡. At the subsurface beneath the northeast of each pagoda, low seismic velocity as well as low resistivity is prominent. It is interpreted to represent the weak underground condition.

  • Most existing double tee systems have need to improve flexure and shear design at their flanges in the section. In order to solve this problem we have devised MTS(Multi-tee slab) system, which is composed of several T-beams and applied spandrel end beams at each slab unit. The application of spandrel end beams has an beneficial effect on the shear strength and force distribution of slab unit because they support the ribs in the transverse direction. Numerical analysis shows that the spandrel end beams increase the shear strength. This paper represents the analysis of shear strength in MTS system and the effect of the spandrel end beams on the system.
