'Form for students' among the indices of internal and external restrictions for orthodontics, which is an adaption of 'Orthodontic Locus of Control Scale' was used as survey tool, and 'Reliability and Stability of the Orthodontic Patient Cooperation Scale' was used as survey tool for the level of cooperation of orthodontic patients. As the result of examination of the effect of internal and external restriction factors on level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment by compensating the general characteristics in the multiple regression analysis, it was found that the level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment is higher for the patients who believe there is strong influence of external restrictions-patents-on the events that determines orthodontic treatment. In order to enhance the level of cooperation for orthodontic treatment of adolescent orthodontic patients, there is a need to assess the relationship between the patient and parents as well as the attitude or psychological state of the patients on orthodontic treatment.

  • We arranged and classified rearing patterns of gifted children's parents in order to find out mothers' roles for their gifted children. We developed a frame of parents' role to analyze the rearing cases of nine mothers whose children currently attend the Korea Science Gifted Academy. We surveyed and conducted semi-structured interviews with nine mothers to collecting qualitative data and were able to find out their roles that were classified into 4 distinctive roles: Instructor, Supporter, Dialogist and Moral Discipliner. Findings indicated that there was no significant difference between the roles found from parents' interview and the ones found from literature review. However, it is noticed that Korean mothers not only played a role for connecting their children's human networks but also did the role for controling the natural process of learning Korean characters and words with siblings as well as parents before school age.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean culture-specific parenting education program for parents with school aged children, and to investigate how this program affected their overall parenting behavior. We ran an 8-week session program for parents with first, second and third elementary school graders and conducted questionnaires before and after the program in order to examine the program's effects. In the questionnaire, we asked participants about parenting behavior, parenting stress, parenting efficacy and parenting knowledge. The results showed that the program participants tended to have higher scores on parenting behavior, parenting efficacy and parenting knowledge after the eight sessions. They also demonstrated lower scores on parenting stress. Study results imply that our parenting program is practical in an elementary school setting and can also apply to higher graders.

  • Adolescence can be a time of turmoil and of stress. Rebellion against authority and against convention is to be tolerated for the sake of growth. The adolescence of children is a difficult time for parents. It is difficult to tolerate his/her manners, language, shifting moods, and constant confrontations of an adolescent child. Because of his/her egocentric thought process, he/she will be truly surprised if parents feel hurt by his/her behaviors. The parents need to learn that all these irrational behaviors fit his/her developmental phase. Adolescents have to free themselves from childhood ties with parents, establish new identification with peers, and find their own identity. The parents can be role models, maintain communication channels, and show their love while adolescents go through temporary disorganization and madness necessary for reorganization which will lead to mature human beings.
