Currently, level of service(LOS) analysis methods for pedestrian sidewalks are provided in Korean Highway Capacity Manual(KHCM, 2013). However, conventional methods provided in the KHCM produce most of pedestrian sidewalks' LOS as level A, indicating that existing analysis methods are unable to reflect realistic pedestrian sidewalks' LOS. The objectives of this research are to identify the suitability of current LOS criteria and to propose improved LOS evaluation criteria and methods with pedestrian volume data carried out for 10,000 sites in 2009. This research proposes new criteria by using the qualitative definition of LOS proposed by Fruin and Hall, new standard Korean human scale and new criteria of pedestrian occupancy space. Application results of new criteria show that more realistic results can be achieved than the existing methods. It is expected that applying the newly developed criteria and methods can make planning, design and construction of pedestrian sidewalks more realistic and various.

Pedestrian facilities encompass pedestrian roads, stairs, and queuing areas exclusively designed for pedestrian use. The Korean Highway Capacity Manual provides guidelines for analyzing the capacity and level of service of pedestrian facilities. However, there is a lack of analysis methods tailored specifically for pedestrian facilities. Therefore, in this study, we introduced a new standard of pedestrian space to account for changes in the Korean body ellipse. Furthermore, based on this newly defined pedestrian space, we proposed a new standard value for the level of service of queuing areas. The results of on-site surveys confirmed that the proposed level of service can effectively reflect the actual walking situation.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between children's walking safety or risk of traffic accident and the physical environments around 20 public elementary schools in Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Field surveys were conducted to assess the street-level objective and subjective walking environments. The GIS method was used for measuring the neighborhood-level land use patterns. Children's walking safety and risk of traffic accident data were collected from the 6,381 grade 5 to 6 students attending 18 elementary schools through the questionnaire survey. Correlation analysis showed that walking safety and risk of traffic accident of the elementary students were associated with the number of temporary or permanent obstacles on the sidewalk, traffic safety signs, driveway and street intersections, street lights, and percentage of detached housing area and road area on neighbourhood-level. This research will promote to help with constructing a safe routes to school and walking-friendly healthy community.
There are no specific criteria deciding what type of crosswalk installs although 4 typed crosswalks at signalized intersections classify according to number of stop line, spacing from the border of intersections and existence of traffic islands or not. Accidents involving pedestrians at signalized intersections are classified by type of crosswalks by traffic volume, pedestrian volume at crosswalk, intersection geometry and phase in view of pedestrians' safety at 50 intersections in Gwangju. The Multiple regression models are applied to express the pedestrian accident rate. In addition, process deciding what type of crosswalk installs which includes accident rate involved pedestrian is changed into number of accident is represented to reduce number of accidents. This paper presents what type of crosswalk installs in order to reduce pedestrian involved accidents at new or existing crosswalk.

The use of existing macroscopic research of pedestrian behavior on the walking link as data is limited in determining an individual pedestrian's moving route and the level of service. In macroscopic studies, it is difficult to make quantitative indices, such as pedestrian flow rate, occupied space, density, and speed for determining the level of service on pedestrian roads. Therefore, the microscopic pedestrian route is required to establish appropriate pedestrian policies. In this study, the Yeok-Sam subway station network was examined using a micro-simulation VISSIM, which was then calibrated and validated statistically. The Pedestrian Road's Level of Service of Yeok-Sam subway station area was evaluated using the pedestrian speed as the evaluating index on the Korean highway capacity handbook.

The ratio of Pedestrians in traffic accident fatality takes up 43% in Korea, which is 2.5 times as much as OECD's average. The traffic accidents features by road type shows that the fatality of the national highway posts the highest due to the accidents of pedestrians. Accordingly, the establishment of safety facilities for pedestrians is expected to increase on the rural roads for the prevention of pedestrian accidents. However, studies on pedestrians have been mainly focused on urban intersections. In Particular, studies on estimating the effectiveness of safety features for pedestrians are very poor. Thus, in this study. the Pedestrian accident probability model on four lane national highway was developed by using logit model. Also, this study analyzed and proposed the effect of facilities as a relative risk by using an odds ratio. As a result of the analysis, the Improvement of sight distance, installing sidewalks and lightings were proven effective alternatives for reducing the pedestrian accidents.
This study develops composite indicators that is capable of estimating QOS (Quality of Service) of pedestrians by enhancing estimation for Level of Service in present transporting spaces for pedestrians that merely concerns quantitative indicators such as pedestrian flow rate, pedestrian stoppage. This paper conducts survey questionnaire to collect data. It utilizes AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) and ANP(Analytic Network Process). The main results show that: first, ANP is better analytic methods than AHP due to the fact that pedestrians feel repetition when they judge level of service. Second, qualitative factors such as pedestrian behaviors, maintenance, scenary for pedestrians and environments should be considered. Importance of qualitative factors is higher in residential area than other areas. I expect that using qualitative indicators and quantitative indicators is appropriate in order to estimate pedestrians' QOS.
The walking is very important because of its environment friendly and low accident rate, and transferring is also important as increasing public transportation uses. Facilities for transferring such as transfer path in Sadang station and internal stairways in Sindorim station are the object of this paper. Using preexistence methodology for Level of Service is not appropriate to transferring facilities because they are occurred only when the train arrive that station. To solve this problem, this paper uses queuing theory and utilization factor. In result, we can get Level of Service which can simulate real situation of the facilities by using new methodology which introduce by this paper. Also it reveals that preexistence methodology cannot simulate real phenomenon in transferring center.

Personal mobility (PM) can increase the mobility of individual, so that the elderly can be set as the target group for using PM because of relatively low walking ability to normal. In this study, we design PM device for elderly that can be used safely in the walking environment such as sidewalk. There are various obstacles in the walking environment, so the device must have mechanical performance to overcome all of them. In this study, we survey the status and level of obstacle factors in walking environment to determine the dynamic performance of the PM device for elderly. We check up several guidelines about walking facilities to define obstacle points for the device, establish field survey methodologies, and conduct field survey for some specific road sections. Based on the survey results, we confirm the possible problems that could arise when the dynamic performance of the device is selected based on the facility-related criteria. We also define the performance requirements for the device based on the requirements for electric wheelchair.
