In present study, using longitudinal data of 161 families from Durham Child and Development Study, we examine the characteristics of infant child care chosen by families of different income levels and ethnicity in the U.S. Time-related changes in child care selection for the first year of the child's life were also investigated. Infants from high-income families were more likely to be cared for by someone other than the mother, compared to infant from lower-income families. African-American families were more likely to use non-maternal care for their infant compared to European-American families. Although the effects of income on type of care were not significant, descriptively, more low-income families used relative care while high-income families used more formal arrangements such as daycare center. Infants from low-income families began care earlier and low-income families paid less for care than other families. The findings call for attention to the importance of child care policy for low-income families as well as further research examining the function of cultural differences in selection of infant child care.
The purpose of this study was to analyze women's selection pattern on kindergarten/child care centers and private tutoring for young children. For this purpose, 1,810 women whose young children's age was between 2 and 6 were selected from KLoWF data. After categorizing the education centers as daycare center, kindergarten, and private institute, it was investigated the women's characteristics related to their decision making for selection of the centers. The results of survey data analyses showed that younger children's mothers preferred to send their children to daycare centers, older children's mothers did to kindergarten. In terms of their dual selection on education centers, the frequency of 6-old-year children attending kindergarten and private institutes was very high. As the children's age was increasing, the frequency of women's multiple selection on daycare center, kindergarten and private institute was also increasing. In addition, regardless of the women's job pattern and existence, they preferred to send children to daycare centers. With these findings, limitations and suggestions for the future studies were also discussed.
This study aims to criticize the recent reform of childcare policy since 2008, which goes for marketization, individualization, and familialization, and to search for its alternative. First, this study analyzes the problems of the above three options based on the context of 'free choice', while examining how welfare regimes have dealt with the changes in childcare policy. Second, the study reviews several controversies in the process of policy formation for childcare service, including coverage of service recipient, policy direction, outcome, efficiency, and priority. Third, it proposes an alternative for accomplishing universal childcare service delivery system. Finally, the paper is to point out that the reform of childcare policy of MB government carries fundamental problems of reinforcing class stratification and gender stratification, and thus dose not attain the ultimate goal of childcare policy.
This study has attempted to suggest the direction for child care policy for 0-2 year old children in Korea from analysis on the issues included in the policy for free child care services of the Korean Government. For the analysis, such materials as governmental statistical reports of child care and policy and articles regarding free child care service in daily news papers during 2012 have been collected. From this study, it has been suggested that the policy for free child care for 0-2 year old children, in future, should take into account reliably carrying out matemity leave and parental leave arrangements, equity childcare support for working couples, realization of parental subsidies, expand parental choice, introduction of a small family day care system, providing information and knowledge on the development of infants and parenting. The suggestions of this study will contribute to the development and practice of an effective child care policy for 0-2 year children, which consider the needs and requirements of young children and their parents.
This study examine the employment and childcare choices of mothers of infants. Study participants were 543 mothers, with infants younger than 40 months, in Suncheon. The results were as follows. First, mothers' employment beliefs, regardless of whether they worked outside the home, showed more positive scores regarding employment when they had jobs and/or higher educational levels. Second, mothers' use of child-care was more likely to begin when their children were at younger ages when the mothers worked outside the home, had higher educational levels and/or perceived their employment circumstances as including the ideas "Always have internal conflicts over whether to quit the job or not" and/or "Have never thought of quitting the job". Third, we examined how the features of the childcare environment and childcare type affected the mothers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate early childhood pre service teachers' perception on the meanings of free play and the roles of teachers in charge of free play hours. For this purpose, this study analyzed reflective journals, metaphorizing, image drawings, and interview records made by 69 junior students majoring in Early Childhood Education and participating in the practice of child care. According to the results, the meanings of free play perceived by the early childhood pre service teachers were summarized into 'an exciting festival,' 'a fenced playground,' and 'a journey for learning.' In addition, their perceptions on the roles of teachers in charge of free play hours were summarized into 'accompanying teacher,' 'leading teacher,' 'correcting teacher,' and 'encouraging teacher.' These results suggest the need of systematic education through pre service curriculums that help early childhood pre service teachers form a balanced view and perception on the meaning of free play and the teachers' role performance.
In this paper, care-giving teachers' recognition of their activities to increase infants and children's rights respect were studied, and teachers' required actions to enhance infants and children's rights respect were analogized. To conduct this survey, focus group interviews were done for 2 groups' care-giving teachers: each group was constructed with 6 teachers. In care-giving teachers' daily work, respected or non-respected various cases on their infants and children's rights respect were intensively reviewed. From this result, total 12 sub categories and detail 40 items were extracted as care-giving teachers' required activities to activate infants and children's rights respect. The aforementioned teachers' activities must be conducted as top priority at their care-giving activities for infants and children's rights respect.
This study observed co-worker's conflict situations and interpersonal conflict management strategies from 5 teacher's conversations and informal gatherings in a new born child classroom. Taxonomic analysis, Domain analysis, and Componential analysis(Spradley, 1980) were used to analyze co-worker's conflict situations, and Styles of Handling Interpersonal Conflict(Rahim, 1983) were used to analyze the child care teachers' interpersonal conflict management strategies. The findings of this study were as follows: First, child care teachers experience conflict. The causes of conflict were to do their best, to protect the right of teachers, and to work jointly. Second, Dominating conflict management strategy was used when a cook wouldn't provide teacher's snacks or adopt a teacher's suggestion about methods of providing snacks. Avoiding conflict management strategy was used when a cleaner asked for help or a supervisor asked for extra work. Integrating conflict management strategy was used when infant care teachers suggested ways to go on a vacation. Obliging conflict management strategy was used when teachers followed the principal's directions to sit in and observe another teacher's classroom. Compromising conflict management strategy was used when infant care teachers suggested ways to clean up a play room together.
The recent reform of child care policy is to give priority to double-income households in the use of childcare facilities. This study analyzed the effect of the use of childcare facilities on the employment of married women under the on-going reform. Using the data from the 19th and 21st wave of the Korean Labor and Income Study, the marginal treatment effect (MTE) analysis method was used to eliminate the selection bias in which the sub-population targeted for policy is determined according to the priority when childcare demand exceeds supply. The study finds that the employment effect of married women who use childcare facilities does not differ statistically from the employment effect of married women who do not use childcare facilities.
