  • This study is concerned with an application of the Boundary Element Method to 2-dimensional elastoplastic stress analysis on the material nonlinearities. The boundary integral formulation adopted an initial stress equation in the inelastic term. In order to determine the initial stress increment, the increment of initial elastic strain energy due to elastic increment in stressstrain curve was used as the convergence criterion during iterative process. For the validity of this procedure, the results of B.E.M. with constant elements and NISA with linear elements where compared on the thin plate with 2 edge v-notches under static tension and the thick cylinder under internal pressure. And this paper compared the results of using unmedical integral with the results of using semi-analytical integral on the plastic domain integral.

  • The overlay model is a certain kinds of numerical analysis method to present the material non-lineariy which is represented the baushinger effect and the strain hardening. This model simulates the complex behavior of material by controlling the properties of the layers which like the hardening ratio, the section area and the yield stress. In this paper, the constitutive equation and plastic flow rule of each layer which are laid in the plane stress field are obtained by using the thermodynamics. Two numerical examples were tested for the validity of proposed method in uniaxial stress and plane stress field with comparable experimental results. The only parameter for the test is the yield stress distribution of each layers.

  • A powerful numerical method that can be used for that purpose is the Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) method developed by Shi in 1988. In this method, rock masses are treated as systems of finite and deformable blocks. Large rock mass deformations and block movements are allowed. Although various extensions of the DDA method have been proposed in the literature, the method is not capable of modeling water-block interaction that is needed when modeling surface or underground excavation in fractured rock. This paper presents a new extension to the DDA method. The extension consists of hydro-mechanical coupling between rock blocks and water flow in fractures. A example of application of the DDA method with the new extension is presented. The results of the present study indicate that fracture flow could have a destabilizing effect on the tunnel stability.

  • The method to form the space of the pneumatic structures by internal pressure is classified greatly as the dual type with the nlty type. The shape of the pneumatic structures consists of the curved surface under uniform tension not greatly to be deformed by the design load and stress must not be concentrated also. Therefore, In this study, we have done the structural analysis of the unity typed pneumatic structures by the NASS which is the program for nonlinear analysis. The analytic model is a rectangular pneumatic membrane structures which have four side fixed edges. And we have done the nonlinear incremental analysis considering the orthotropic material.

  • For non-linear analysis of stiffened shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account second order rotational terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. The post-buckling behaviors of stiffened shell structures are traced by modeling the stiffener as a shell element and considering general transformation between the main structure and the stiffener at the connection node. Numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references' results.

  • In simply supported concrete beams with concentrated load, there is arch action that the internal lever arm length varies through shear span. Recently shear analysis model considering this effect has been developed, but the analysis algorithm is so complicated. Moreover, the variation of internal lever arm length is not considered on the shear compatibility condition. In this study, the shear analysis model is developed more simply and the variation of internal lever arm length is considered on the shear compatibility condition. From these modifications, an actual shear behavior of RC beams subjected to concentrated load could be expected from the results of the proposed analysis model.

  • This study presents a nonlinear finite element procedure involving a phenomenological model to validate the tensile strain capacity of the X80 line pipe developed for the strain-based design purpose. The procedure is based on the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model, which models nucleation, growth and coalescence of void volume fraction occurred inside a metal. In this study, the user-defined material module (UMAT) is implemented in the commercial finite element platform ABAQUS and is applied to the nonlinear damage analysis of steel specimens. Material parameters for the nonlinear damage analysis of base and weld metals are calibrated from numerical simulations for the tensile tests of round bar and full thickness specimens. They are then employed in the numerical simulations for SENT (Single Edge Notch Tension) test and CWPT (Curved Wide Plate Test) and in the simulations, the tensile strain capacities are naturally evaluated. Comparison of the numerical results with the experimental results and the conventional empirical formulae shows that the proposed numerical procedure can fairly well predict the tensile strain capacity of X80 line pipe. So, it is readily expected to be effectively applied to the strain-based design procedure.

  • For spatial free vibration of non-symmetric thin-walled curved beams with shear deformation, an improved formulation is proposed in the present study. The elastic strain and the kinetic energies are first derived by considering constant curvature and shear deformation effects due to shear forces and restrained warping torsion. Next equilibrium equations and force-deformation relations are obtained using a stationary condition of total potential energy. And the finite element procedures are developed by using isoparametric curved beam element with arbitray thin-walled sections. Particularly not only shear deformation and thickness-curvature effects on vibration behaviors of curved beams but also mode transition and crossover phenomena with change in curvatures of beams are parametrically investigated. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the reliability of this study, various numerical solutions for spatial free vibration are compared with results by available references and ABAQUS's shell element.
