Weed-Ecological Classification of the Collected Barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli(L.) Beauv.] in Korea - III. Intra-specific variation of collected barnyardgrass species and accessions to herbicides response (한국산(韓國産) 피(Echinochloa crus-galli (L.)   • The six barnyardgrass [Echinochloa oryzicola (vasing.) Vasing.] and seventeen barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-gadli (L.) Beauv.] accessions, which were collected national widely in 1986 and selected two times through 1987. To study different growth response due to herbicide, pyrazolate, bifenox, quinclorac, the experiment was conducted with herbicide agar culture without nutrients, 1. Albinistic discoloration due to pyrazolate was more sensitive in E, crus-galli than E. oryzicola and among barnyardgrass accessions, Kumi, Ichon-A, Ichon-B, Boun-B and Kwangju-B were rather susceptible than Gyongju, Ansong, Boun-A, Jongju-A and Kwangju-A. 2. Twisting and growth retardation due to bifenox was less sensitive in E. oryzicola with less intra-specific variations than in E. crus-galli. Among E. crus-galli accessions, Boun-B, Ansong, Ichon-A, Ichon-B, Wonju and Kwangju-B were particulary susceptible, and Jinyang, Jongju-B, Jongju-A, Daejon, Kurye and Kwangju-A were tolerant as much as E. oryzicola. 3. Growth retardation and withering to dead due to quinclorac was more sensitive in E. oryzicola with less intra-specific variations than in E. crus-galli. Among accessions of E. curs-galli, Boun-A, Iri, Jongju-A, Jongju-B, Kwangju-A and Kwangju-B were rather similar suseptible to E, oryzicola than kimhae, Gyongju, Kumi, Wonju, Ichon-A, Ichon-B and Ansong. 4. Most accession of E. oryzicola was tolerant to both pyrazolate and bifenox, while susceptible to quinclorac. Among other accessions of E. crus-galli, Kurye, Kimhae, and Daejon were tolerant to all experimented herbicides, and Iri, Jongju-A, Jongju-B, and Kwangju-A were only tolerant to both pyrazolate and bifenox, while Kumi, Wonju, Ichon-A, Ichon-B, Boun-B and Kwangju-B were only tolerant to quinclorac.

Variation of Chamazulene Contents in Local Collections of Mugwort (Artemisia spp.) (수집종 쑥의 청색색소 카마줄렌 함량 변이)

  • This study was carried out to select chamazulene containing species and to know whether chamazulene content varies depend on individual plants within a population or not. Among five collected mugworts, chamazulene was detected only in Artemisia indica. Chamazulene content in the leaves was higher than that in stems at vegetative stage. Camazulene in inflorescence was not higher than that in leaves even at reproductive stage. Chamazulene was higher in the leaves of the upper part of the plant than those of the middle and lower of the plant at vegetative stage. Chamazulene contents of 50 individuals within a population were varied from 0.01% to 0.11% with mean of 0.045%. About 36 individuals, 72 percent of total individuals examined, had more than 0.03% of chamazulene. There was no difference in chamazulene contents between parents and their clones.

Familial Atrial Myxoma with Carney's Complex - 1 Case - (Carney' Complex 소견을 보이는 가족성 심방 점액종 - 치험 1례-)

  • Myxomas are the most common form of intracardiac tumors and are found primarily in the left atrium. In rare cases, Carney and associates have described a syndrome called "the complex of myxoma" consisting of cardiac myxoma, which characteristically is familial, in assocation with two or more of the follow conditions: myxomatous masses (cardiac myxoma, cutaneous myxosma, and mammary myxoid fibroademoma), spotty pigmented lesions of the skin, and endocrine disorders. We report a case of familial atrial myxoma with Carney's complex in a 19-year old woman who has spotty pigmentations on her face, and left atrial myxomas, and myxoma on the right nipple. Her mother and sister share the left atrial myxoma. The myxomas originated in the septum of the left atrium and the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve were successfully excised. In conclusion, family members of affected patients should be screened periodically with echocardiography in an attempt to identify asymptomatic cardiac myxomas. Complete excision and postoperative follow up are necessary to rule out the muticentricity and high rate of recurrent lesions.

  • Since sulfonylurea (SU) herbicide-resistant Monochoria korsakowii in Seosan reclaimed land in 1998 was reported first, herbicide-resistant weed species and their area of occurrence have been steadily increasing. In recent years, Sagittaria trifolia resistant to SU herbicides has been reported in Gimhae, Gyeongnam province. While collecting S. trifolia for constructing barcode database of major weeds we were suspicious by the continuous variation in the leave morphology of the species. In order to identify the S. trifolia from S. aginash we barcoded the species collected from domestic using ITS and compared the sequence variation with the ITS sequences of S. aginash downloaded from NCBI. As a result, it was found that the plants collected from the domestic did not have any variation among individuals although they showed wide morphological variation. On the other hand, interspecific variation between S. trifolia and S. aginash was 4.6%. Plants that are difficult to identify using morphological characters can be identified quickly and accurately using the barcode technique. Herbicide-resistant weeds may require different management practices depending on the species even in the same genus. Domestic herbicide-resistant weeds are steadily increasing. Therefore, accurate identification of these species must be preceded for effective weed control.

Genetic variation in five species of Korean Orostachys (Crassulaceae) (한국산 바위솔속(돌나물과) 5종에 대한 유전적 변이)

  • Starch gel electrophoretic studies using 24 populations of five Korean Orostachys species were conducted to investigate allozyme variation and to test hypotheses of systematic relationships among species. The resulting phenogram showed that the populations of five Korean Orostachys species were divided into two major groups. And they were concordant with molecular and morphological data in suggesting that Orostachys was divided into two groups corresponding to the subsect. Appendiculatae and subsect. Orostachys. The low genetic identities among Korean Orostachys species indicated that the species of Orostachys have diverged gradually through the model of geographical species. Comparing the previous genetic data from the species with similar life history and mode of reproduction, most of Korean Orostachys species revealed a significant low genetic variation, while the widespread O. japonicus showed a relatively high genetic variation among the Korean species. This kind of genetic variation pattern might be the results of the isolated habitats, limited numbers of individuals within the populations, destruction of habitats, inbreeding and asexual reproduction in Korean Orostachys populations. The Jungdongjin population (POP 21) of O. malocophyllus was genetically unrelated with remaining populations of the same species, and this interpretation was consistent to the results from the previous palynological and morphological studies. Our allozyme data supported the taxonomic treatment of recently proposed taxa, O. iwarenge (Makino) Hara for. magnus and O. margaritifolius.

Inheritance of Fruit Ripening Time in Oriental Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta Nakai) (동양배 과실 숙기형질의 유전분석)

  • To improve the breeding efficiency of oriental pear, heritability, correlation and frequency distribution of fruit ripening date were analyzed using 4,035 seedlings obtained from 15 families between 13 parental cultivars. Although variation of fruit ripening time was higher in most early-ripening parental cultivars than in late-ripening parental cultivars, according to analysis of average, standard deviation, and coefficient of ripening variation for ten years, fruit ripening time obtained from all parental cultivars was inherited narrower and more stable variation than others fruit trait, with 0.92-3.41 in coefficient of variation. The heritability of fruit ripening time was calculated to be over 0.8 in almost all crosses and average fruit ripening time of seedlings from cross combinations could be predicted based on that of the parental cultivars due to its superior heritability relative to other fruit traits. The average ripening time was earlier than the mid-parental value in families obtained from cross combinations using at least one late-ripening cultivar as parent, indicating that the early-ripening trait was more likely to be dominant compared to the late-ripening trait. By contrast, average ripening time was clustered in families of crosses not only between mid-season and early-season cultivars, but also between mid-season and mid-season cultivars. There was highly significant relationship (at 0.68) between mid-parental and progeny mean fruit ripening time. The correlation between fruit ripening time and fruit weight was also highly positive and thus, the mid-parental fruit ripening time could be a potent criterion for indirect selection of fruit weight.

A Study of Clinical Investigations of Pulmonary Tuberculoma (폐 결핵종의 치료에 따르는 임상경과에 관한 연구)

  • Background : A pulmonary tuberculoma is one of the most common causes of a solitary pulmonary lesion. Treating a tuberculoma is still controversial and there are few reports on antituberculosis chemotherapy. In this study, the clinical findings and changes in the size of tuberculomas on a radiograph after completing antituberculosis chemotherapy was investigated. Methods : The medical records, an chest radiographs of 18 pulmonary tuberculoma patients who were admitted to the Gachon medical school, Ghil medical center between April 1998 and August 2001, were reviewed. The symptomatic changes were recorded and the size of the tuberculomas following treatment were compared. To compare the size, the long distance of each tuberculoma on the chest radiographs were measured and the additional radiological findings of calcification, satellite nodules and cavities were investigated. Results : Fifteen patients were men and 3 were women. The median age was 46 (24-74). Among these 18 patients, 14 patients had clinical symptoms. The other 4 patients were diagnosed incidentally as during a routine chest radiograph. The mean size of the tuberculomas on the initial plain chest film was $4.3{\pm}2.3cm$(range : 1.7-10 cm) and after 6 months treatment, it had decreased to $1.68{\pm}2.00cm$(range : 1.5-6.5 cm) (P<0.05). At least 6 months of antituberculosis chemotherapy resulted in the findings of a tuberculoma with a disappearance in 9, a decreased size in 4, and no change in 5 on the chest radiograph. Calcifications were found in 3 patients on the initial chest film and the chest CT and all calcified tuberculomas had disappeared after treatment. Conclusion : Although a pulmonary tuberculoma can remain as an inactive lesion for a long time, if it is confirmed by pathological or bacteriological methods, antituberculosis chemotherapy will be beneficial despite the presence of calcification.

Prevention of the Green-grey Discoloration in Retorted Liquid Whole Eggs (가압살균한 전난액의 녹색변이 방지에 관한 연구)

  • In order to use the liquid whole eggs as an ingredients of retorted products, the provention of the green-grey discoloration of retorted liquid whole eggs by the addition of the Na$_2$EDTA was investigated. And palatability change of the retorted liquid whole eggs by the addition of Na$_2$EDTA was also investigated. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. More severe green-grey discoloration was occurred when higher cooking temperature and longer cooking time were used. 2. Green-grey discoloration of retorted liquid whole eggs could be prevented by the addition of about 0.015% of Na$_2$EDTA. 3. The palatability of retorted liquid whole eggs was not lowered by the addition of 0.02% of Na$_2$EDTA and green grey discoloration was not developed during the storage time of 22 days at room temperature.

  • With the aim of inducing mutation in fern Cyrtomium caryoptideum var. coreanum, rhizome segments of In vitro-grown cultures were treated with chemical mutagens such as EMS, NMU and colchicine. Based on regeneration ratios, sensitivities for each treatments were assessed and also optimum treatment condition of each mutagens was explored. Optimum concentration for EMS treatment was considered to be 20 to 50mM and for NMU 5 to 10mM. NMU was found to be more effective in inducing chlorophyll and morphological variations than EMS. The RAPD were performed to check the genetic modification of phenotypical variants. As a result, polymorphic DNA band patterns between wild type and variants were observed by two 10-mer primers.

Association between SNPs on equine chromosomes 3 and body conformation of 12 month of age in Jeju crossbred horses (Jeju crossbred에서 3번 염색체 단일염기변이와 12개월령 체형과의 연관관계)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the equine chromosomes (ECA) 3 for the body conformations of 12 month of age in Jeju crossbred (Jeju horses ${\times}$ Thoroughbred). A total of 199 Jeju crossbred horse samples were obtained from the National Institute of Subtropical Livestock Research Institute for this study. To correctly estimate the body conformations, we measured thirteen elements relevant to the body conformation such as body weight, wither height, body length for all the 199 horses at 12 month of age. Furthermore, all the horses were genotyped using four SNPs including the BIEC2-808466, BIEC2-808543, BIEC2-808967, BIEC2-809370, of which genomic coordinates range approximately from 105.1Mbp to 110 Mbp in the ECA3. For the phenotypic data sets, the average body weight was $193.7{\pm}24.5kg$ and the height was $124.5{\pm}4.0cm$. As for the genotypic data, the miner allele frequencies of the SNPs were shown to be varied from 0.01 to 0.291. Using the phenotypic and genotypic data sets, analysis of covariance was performed to find any association between those SNP genotypes and body conformations, using year of birth, month of birth, sex, and parity as the covariance components. The result showed that alternative genotypes in the BIEC2-808967 and BIEC2-809370 SNPs were significantly associated with the body length (P<0.05) and the wither height (P<0.05) respectively in the Jeju crossbred horses. Therefore, it is estimated that there are significant associations in the body conformation of 12 month of age of Jeju crossbred for those two SNPs used in this study.
