  • Compressive axial behavior of the variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation is investigated from the field load test results at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ construction site in Incheon city. Variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation is a type of partial-displacement pile formed by mixing bidding material with in situ soils to obtain a rigid and strong variable cross-section column in a relatively soft ground. The foundations are usually constructed as a group; however in this study, only single foundation was installed and tested under compressive axial load on foundation head. For the comparison of the variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation axial behavior, behavior of typical Pretensioned spun high strength concrete (PHC) pile constructed on a relatively soft ground near the surface was analyzed. It was concluded that variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation efficiently resists against axial load with sufficient stiffness and strength within a considerable range of axial load magnitude.

  • The state-of-art of curved box girder bridge with cross section design has advanced in various area. In these days, several analytical techniques for behaviors of curved box girder bridges cross section are available to engineers. The transfer matrix method is extensively used for the structural analysis because its merit in the theoretical background and applicability. The technique is attractive for implementation on a numerical solution by means of a computer program coded in Fortran language with a few elements. To demonstrate this fact, it gives good results which compare well with finite element method. Therefore, this paper proposed the static analysis method of curved box bridge with cross section by transfer matrix method based on pure-torsional theory and the optimal span ratio/variable cross section ratio of 3 span continuous curved box girder bridge.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present an analytical method for free vibration of stepped horizontally curved members on two-parameter elastic foundation. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams are derived as non-dimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically for the circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and elliptic curved beams with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints. As the numerical results, the lowest four natural frequency parameters are presented as the functions of various non-dimensional system parameters. Also the typical mode shapes are presented.

  • This paper deals with the geometrical nonlinear analyses of post-buckled columns with variable cross-section. The objective columns having variable cross-section of the width, depth and square tapers are supported by both hinged ends. By using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory, differential equations governing the elastica of post-buckled column and their boundary conditions are derived. The solution methods of these differential equations which have two unknown parameters are developed. As the numerical results, equilibrium paths, elasticas and stress resultants of the post-buckled columns are presented. Laboratory scaled experiments were conducted for validating the theories developed in this study.

  • Numerical methods are developed to obtain the critical loads and to analyze the post-buckling behaviour of the linearly varying tapered columns. The non-dimensional differential equations governing the elastica of post buckled column are derived by third order and solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method. Three kinds of cross-sectional shape with simply supported end constraint are applied in unmerical examples. As the numerical results, the equlibrium paths. the typical elastica of post buckled columns and the critical load vs. section ratio curves are presented in figures. Also, the effects of cross-sectional shape factor on critical loads and postbuckling behaviour are presented in tables.

  • A method is presented for the analysis of curved segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges including time-dependent effects due to load history, temperature history, creep, shrinkage, aging of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. The segments can be either precast or cast-in-place. Thin-walled beam theory and finite element method are combined to develop a curved nonprismatic thin-walled box beam element. The element consists of three nodes and each node has eight displacement degrees of freedom, including transverse distortion and longitudinal warping of the cross section.

  • This paper deals with the strongest static arches with the solid regular polygon cross-section. Both span length and volume of arch are always held constant regardless the shape functions of cross-sectional depth of regular polygon. The normal stresses acting on such arches are calculated when both static vertical and horizontal point loads are subjected. By using the calculating results of stresses, the optimal shapes of strongest static arches are obtained, under which the maximum normal stress become to be minimum. For determining the redundant of such indeterminate arches, the least work theorem is adopted. As the numerical results, the configurations, i.e. section ratios, of the strongest static arches are reported in tables and figures. The results of this study can be utilized in the field of the minimum weight design of the arch structures.

  • The differential equation governing both the free vibrations and buckling loads of tapered beam-columns of regular polygon cross-section with constant volume were derived and solved numerically. The parabolic and sinusoidl tapers were chosen as the variable depth of cross-section for the tapered beam-column. In numerical examples, the clamped-clamped, hinged-clamped and hinged-hinged end constraints were considered. The variations of frequency parameters and first buckling load parameters with the non-dimensional system parameters are reported in figures, and typical vibrating mode shapes are presented. Also, the configurations of strongest columns were determined.

  • The closed forms of mass matrix with rotational inertia matrix are developed for free vibration analysis in space structures containing linearing tapered members with cross section of thin-walled tube. The exact displacement functions are used for formulating mass matrix. The very small slopes of the tapered member are used in usual practice, such that the series expansion forms of these are also developed to avoid numerical failure in vibration analysis. Significant improvements of accuracy and efficiency of free vibration analysis are achieved by using the mass matrices developed in this study. Frequencies of free vibration of tapered members are compared with solutions based upon stepped representation of beam element.
