  • Barnyard grasses are dominant weed that are not eliminated easily in the direct water seeding cultivation. So, deep water treatment can reduce their growth at the early growing stage of submerged paddy. This study was carried out to investigate the reducing growth of the barnyard grasses through flooding at seedling stages of rice plant in the green house. Under the normal condition, the plant height of rice variety, Samgwangbyeo, and 3 species of barnyard grass, E. caudata, E. pratocola and E. utilis were not showed the difference up to 10 days after seeding while the plant height of 3 barnyard grass species, especially E. utilis, was more elongated than the rice at 25 days after seeding. Plant height of the 3 barnyard grasses were not elongated largely during 3, 5 and 7 days of flooding treatment at 10 days after seeding. Interestingly, the rice seedlings was grown over 20 cm, and the flooding tolerance of rice seedling was higher than the 3 barnyard grass varieties. However, after flooding treatment for 3, 5 and 7 days, the elongation of plant height of 3 barnyard grasses, especially E. utilis was more speedy compared to rice seedlings as 6 to 9 days passes. And the protein spots from barnyard grasses were also reduced and eliminated more than the spots of rice seedling after flooding treatment.

  • The object of this study was to determine the optimum seeding dates of "Donganbyeo", "Daesanbyeo", Hoanbyeo", "Nonghobyeo", and "Gwnganbyeo" for direct seeding on dry paddy in Youngnam region. Dry seeds of these varieties were sown 5 times with 10-day intervals from April 20 to May 30. It took 13 to 14 days from sowing to emergence. It was shortened in the delayed seeding date, but the emerged seedlings per unit area was decreased as the seeding date was advanced before May. Heading date was delayed as seeding was delayed. Culm length, panicle length and number of spikelets per panicle was not affected by seeding date, but number of panicle per $m^2$ and ripened grain ratio were high from April 30 to May 10 seeding date. Consequently, the optimum seeding date for high yield of "Donganbyeo", "Daesanbyeo", "Hoanbyeo", "Nonghobyeo", and "Gwanganbyeo" was estimated May 3, May 2, May 10, May 8, and May 1, respectively and "Gwanganbyeo" was estimated May 3, May 2, May 10, May 8, and May 1, respectively.

  • This experiment was conducted at the Kyungpook National University Agriculture college farm during 1988 to determine the effect of tiller no. Per hill on growth and competitive response of the rice plant. The results obtained were summarized as follows : As tiller no. Per hill, Rice yield increased and also yield component such as 1000-grain weight and ripening ratio were increased up to at 10 tiller no. Per hill but they decreased at 13 tiller no. Per hill in used four rice varieties. Culm length of four rice varieties was shortest at one tiller no. Per hill however as tiller no. Per hill increased culm length significantly decreased in all rice varieties. Flag leaf length was highest at one tiller no. Per hill in all varieties while flag leaf length decreased with increased tiller no. Per hill. Highest harvest index exhibited at 13 tiller no. Per hill in all varieties and also showed that Chil seongbyeo and Samgang byeo of Tongil variety were higher harvest index compared to Nagdongbyeo and Palgongbyeo of Japonica Variety. Tiller no. Per hill did not significantly affect the heading date except by delayed heading date on Chilseong and Samgangbyeo at one tiller no. Per hill. The correlation coefficients of competitive index and ripening ratio and harvest index were 0.60 and 0.77 respectively while panicle length was 0.43 and grain weight was 029.

  • In order to determine the critical seeding date in dry paddy field at southern plain area of Gyeongbug province, dry seeds of three different rice cultivars was sown April 25 to June 20 at 15 or 10-day intervals. The number of days from seeding to emergence decreased in late seeding date : from 32 days at April 25 to 7 days at June 10 sowing. The number of seedlings showed 121-154 plants per square meter were not much differed among the varieties and seeding dates. Culm length, panicle length and ripened grain ratio decreased in late seeding date, but number of panicles per square meter, 1,000 grain weight and spikelets number per panicle were similar among the seeding dates. The cumulative effective temperature(mean air temperature-15$^{\circ}C$) from emergence to heading was very constant having 655$\pm$9$^{\circ}C$ in Keomhobyeo, 771$\pm$9$^{\circ}C$ in Donghaebyeo and 801$\pm$3$^{\circ}C$ in Milyang 95, respectively. Grain yield of Dong Haebyeo seeded in June 20 and Milyang 95 seeded in June 10 were much lower compared with other seeding dates and increased green kernel in late seeding date of Donghaebyeo and Milyang 95.

  • Thiobencarb retarded the growth of new leaves in only barnyardgrass under dry condition while under water condition the shoot growth of broadcast rice, and both shoot and root growth of barnyardgrass was considerably inhibited. Root elongation of rice and barnyardgrass was severely inhibited only under water condition, while that of transplanted rice was slightly inhibited. Inhibition of shoot and root growth in broadcast, drilled rice and barnyardgrass under water condition was much higher than that under dry condition, whereas the inhibition was less in transplanted rice than direct seeded rice. Microscopically, thiobencarb severely inhibited shoot growth and development of barnyardgrass by inducing tubular-like leaves. The cells of the shoot apices of treated barnyardgrass seedling under dry condition was vacuolated and irregularly arranged. Under water condition, leaf primordia of broadcast rice was constricted, barnyardgrass showed tubular-like leaves, inhibited apices elongation and vacuolated cells(visually lack cytoplasm).
